Scarlet Lilichoi always pondered in her free time, managing the time and safe space for it was never set in stone. Sometimes she would called this her maladaptive daydreaming sessions, as she got older she found herself jumping around literally every nook and cranny she found herself.
This annoyed her mother Marina. However, Marina knew the maladaptive energy made her daughter extremely happy. She thought of healthier and much resourceful activities Scarlet could participate in, ballet. She had a natural grace, from her first breath she was so sweet.
Scarlet was just thirteen years old when she enrolled in Open Hope School of Ballet. It costed a pretty penny from her parents, but they knew it would make her happy. She was all smiles on the first day, and it was no secret that the child was truly talented. As months went by she was regarded as the favorite, she won every completion, and stole every recital show.
When Scarlet reached 18, her dance teacher told her she had received a scholarship for Kim Ballerinas School of Dance. Scarlet was taken aback by the offer, Kim Ballerina's was an extremely prestigious dance school in Korea. She was delighted, and all her hard work and payed off. She was saddened to leave her close friends, but she had some friends joining her for the scholarship.
Joining her was her longtime friends Nari and Clara. The three girls were inseparable and the idea of them going to a famous ballet school together to broaden their careers made them happier. Today they spent their morning in Scarlet's room, adorned in flowers and succulents. Potted plants with names, polaroids of the trio taped into the white walls, covered with the unlit fairy lights. Scarlet sat next to the window, looking outside. It was a beautiful sunlit day, with just a bit of wind pushing the trees. Nari quietly napped on Scarlet's big white bed, her black hair spiraled all over her head. Clara lied her head on Nari's stomach, taking in her sweet scent.
"Scar" Clara called out softly, so she didn't wake up sweet Nari. Scarlet turned to her friend with a content expression on her face, and leaned the back of her head on the windowsill. "Yeah?" She said to her.
"Are you excited?" Clara asked, smiling tenderly, while grazing her fingers on Nari's stomach, and Nari shifting to her friends movement. Scarlet simply nodded and looked at her fingers before picking it. "The competition is going to be even harder" Scarlet pointed out. Clara rose from her position and nodded her head. "Yet you're still the most talented being I know" Clara confessed.
Nari suddenly rose up, crossed her arms, and pouted gingerly at her friend. "I'm right here Clara!" Nari complained, making her friends laugh. Clara put her arms around Nari and nuzzled her face in her neck.
"I'm gonna miss Andong though, I mean this is our home" Scarlet pointed out. "It might not be my home, but it is special". Clara mentioned. "Do you miss California?" Nari asked her friend.
"I do yeah, but I think I'll miss Andong more" Clara said. "Daegu is only an hour far from here, we will be fine" Nari pointed out. Scarlet nodded and brought her knees into her chest. "I suppose you're right" Scarlet softly said, resting her head on her knees.
Andong was the only home Scarlet had. She couldn't bear the thought of leaving it. She had her parents here and she didn't want to leave them. She could have been born in California with Clara, but when her father met her mother, he fell in love, married her, and too her back to his home country of Korea.
She made Clara feel just as close, she was more than just a foreigner, she was her best friend. And of course, Nari made sure too. Scarlet look a deep and breath and stood up, resulting in her bones cracking. Nari laughed at this interaction, slyly mocking Scarlet onto being an elder lady.
Scarlet dismissed her teasing by slowly falling into a split, making the three girls burst out laughing. Clara chuckled to herself when calming down, looking slyly at Nari, a hopeful gaze. Nobody noticed
A cheerful knock at the door gained the attention of all the girls. "Come in!" Scarlet sung. Her mother entered the door blissfully with a elated smile on her face. She scanned the clean room and the disheveled girls. "I see that all of you girls packed, you're ready to leave me already" Marina teased.
Scarlet giggled and shook her head. "I'll never leave you mom" Scarlet reassured her. "Scar, mom wouldn't even let you leave her" Scarlet's father, Min-chul called out from behind her mother.
Scarlet smiled at her dear parents, the thought of leaving them hurt her. Sure she was only an hour and thirty minutes away, however those minutes could have been spend on the shoulder on a parent, comforting you.
"Don't worry Mr. and Mrs. Choi, we will keep her safe" Nari reassured them. Min-chul smiled at her and said a soft thank you in Korean to her, making her smile. That smile, it made Clara's heart flutter.
After Scarlet's parents left, Clara gave her a look of confusion which made Scarlet giggle. "What is it Clara?" She asked. "I thought your last name was Lilichoi, not Choi" Clara asked.
"My father's last name is Choi and my mother's maiden name is Lili, They merged it when I was born, I carry a completely different family name" Scarlet said. Clara and Nari both awed at the little story and Nari pinched Scarlet's cheek.
"After all these years I finally figured that out" Clara laughs. The girls sat in a circle on the floor together and held each others hands. "We gotta make this ballet academy our bitch!" Nari exclaimed. "I agree, we were talented dancers at Open Hope, we have to keep our scholarships" Clara told her friends. "I can't wait to dance" Scarlet said happily.
Nari smiled and sat up gracefully and pranced around Scarlet's room. "Ah yes! The aspect of love and passion is all around us through dance" Nari sung happily. Clara jumped and the pirouetted her way to her friend and slung and arm around her shoulder. "We shall find love and passion in other places other than dance hm~" Clara teased, which made Scarlet blush.
"As in boyfriends?" Scarlet asked. "Oh of course!" Nari sung, Clara just took and deep breath and blinked at Nari. "Guys we have to focus on dance, boys should be the least of your priorities" Scarlet scolded her friends playfully.
"Okay mom" Clara joked, crossing her arms. "You've never had a boyfriend before let alone a kiss" Nari teased. "I've never had my first kiss either" Clara said shyly. Suddenly, Nari cupped Clara's face and kissed her soft lips tenderly. Scarlet gasped and Clara turned red. Nari pulled away and caressed her cheek lovingly. "Technically that wasn't a first kiss, first kisses are usually make-outs, but at least you have something to expect now" Nari told her friend, who was speechless.
Scarlet giggled and started fiddling with her fingers again. "I feel as if we are fifteen again, I mean we're talking about first kisses, it's so nostalgic to when you had your first make-out Nari" Scarlet said. Nari blushed at the thought while Clara swallowed a lump him her throat.
"Joe Williams; the Jamaican boy that came to our studio for a year then left, oh he was so dreamy" Nari said. "I wonder what he's up-to now" Clara finally chimed in. "Being drop dead gorgeous, but he's the past, any available bachelors at the studio are in for a ride for us girls" Nari smiled.
"I'll be focusing on dance" Scarlet said. Nari rolled her eyes and smiled. "Whatever you say Scar" Nari told her.
The three girl continued to ramble about what their future lives were going to be about until they ended up sleeping on the carpet floor. Marina came in to see the best friends peacefully resting. She placed a comfortable fleece over the girls and turned off the lights, before she longly stared at her talented daughter, who was slipping...
