Episode 7:

I was on leave, and my wife and I were going fishing. I love fishing. We packed a few old clothes and drove down to the Bay, which was about an hour away. We were just leaving when I remembered the key to the safe. I told Judy about it.

'That's against the rules, Joe,' she said. 'You should have given it to Dave.'

'I know,' I said, 'but...'

'It's not like you to break the rules. You'll be in trouble if they find out.'

'I know,' I said, 'But Cotton trusts me. I can't let him down.'

Judy said, 'You'd better leave it here, then. Leave it in the kitchen drawer with our keys.'

'No, I'll take it with me,' I said. 'if I leave it here I'll worry about it. Now, have we got everything?' Judy looked at her list and nodded. 'Good,' I said. 'Let's go!'

We had a lovely week. It was peaceful and relaxing, and we caught lots of fish. But there was a nasty surprise for us when we got home. The house was in chaos. All the drawers had been emptied, books had been pulled from the bookshelves and thrown on the floor, and the lounge had been turned over. I phoned Mandy at work, but she was all right, so then I phoned the police.

When they arrived, the two policeman looked around the house, and then asked what was missing. 'That's the strange thing,' I said. 'Look. The TV's there, and the video.'

'There wasn't any money in the house,' added Judy. 'I don't have much jewellery, but it's here. Look.'

'Hmm.' One of the policeman said, 'It was probably kids, looking for money. You were lucky!' I looked around the house. I didn't think we were lucky. But I hoped the policeman was right. I hoped it was money they were looking for... and not something else!

The police officers looked through the house again, but they didn't find any clues. 'There's nothing we can do, I'm afraid,' the policeman said. 'Are you sure that everything's here?'.

'I think so,' I said. 'If there is anything missing, we'll let you know.'

'Right. And if I were you, I'd get that lock fixed.' He pointed at the broken lock on the bathroom window. The policemen left, and Judy and I got to work. I put the books back on their shelves and arranged the heavy furniture while Judy tidied the bedrooms and the kitchen. Then I decided to fix the broken lock. I had a spare lock in the garden shed so I went to the kitchen drawer to get the key. It wasn't there.

'Where's the shed key?' I asked Judy. We looked in all the drawers and we found that all our keys were missing. Judy said, 'They were all in the drawer when we went away. I'm sure they were. It's your fault, Joe. Someone wants the contents of Cotton's briefcase, and they won't give up know. I'm scared. I'm going to call the police again.'

'I'll do it,' I said quickly. I dialled the police number, and I talked to one of the policeman who had come to the house. 'Something strange has happened,' I said. 'All our keys have been stolen. Nothing else is missing.'

'Well, Mr Moon, why would anyone want your keys?' I hesitated. Should I tell him? Then I said, 'I have no idea officer, no idea at all.' Judy said, 'You should have told him about the other key. You'd better tell Mandy, anyway.' I thought about it, but I decided not to tell Mandy.

'If she knew, she'd only worry,' I said. 'In any case, she'll be safer if she doesn't know.'

Episode 9:

On the last day of my leave, I changed all the locks. Everything was back in its place, and nothing was missing, except the keys. It was a beautiful day, warm and sunny. The forecast was for a cool change, so I decided to enjoy the good weather while it lasted. I took the newspaper into the garden, planning to forget about the breakin. I thought it had something to do with the briefcase at the hotel, but there was nothing I could do.

I opened the newspaper, and there was a story about Henry Cotton. He was the leader of a team of scientists in Hong Kong and Melbourne. They were working on important medical research. I didn't understand all the details. But the scientists were about to make an important discovery.

Later, I showed the paper to Judy and Mandy. 'Look,' I said. 'Henry Cotton is a very famous man.' Judy didn't want to hear about Cotton because she blamed him for the break-in. But Mandy looked at the photo of the scientists, taken at the university.

'Who's that?' she asked. She pointed to a young man standing at the edge of the group. He was tall, and good-looking. His name was Ben Morris, and the paper said he was Cotton's special assistant. 'Cute,' said Mandy. She thought he was very attractive! So I said, 'He works at your university. It won't be hard to find him. You should get someone to introduce you.' 'No!' said Judy firmly. 'I don't want you to get involved too!'

I winked at Mandy. 'Your mother prefers a quiet life,' I said. But I thought she was probably right. We should not be involved. I would return the briefcase next day, and forget about the mystery of Henry Cotton. It should have been easy, shouldn't it ? But of course, it wasn't.

I went back to work, planning to return the briefcase to Henry Cotton. Dave was in my office.

'G'day, Dave,' I said. 'Did anything interesting happen while I was away?'

'Not much,' Dave grunted. I wasn't surprised at Dave's reply. He's very different from me. He's younger, of course, and he's not really interested in his job. 'Oh, there was one thing,' Dave said casually. 'That man you were so friendly with... Dr Cotton. He's gone. He's not coming here any more.'

'Gone?' I asked in amazement. 'What do you mean?'

'I don't know,' said Dave. 'But he sent a man here to get his things.'

'What man? What things? Why didn't he come himself?' I demanded.

'OK, Joe,' said Dave calmly. 'One question at a time!' I took a deep breath, and then I said, 'What happened, Dave?'

'Well... it was like this,' replied Dave. 'This chap came in last week. Tuesday, I think it was. He had one of our numbered disks from the safe-room. Anh he had a letter from Cotton, on university notepaper, which said he was to collect a package from the safe.'

'A package, was it?' I asked. 'Are you sure?'

'Yeah, that's what the letter said. But I couldn't find the safe key, so he didn't get the package.'

'And where's the disc now?' I wanted to know.

'He took it with him. Number... um... I wrote it down? 862. Yes, 862. He took it away, and he was pretty angry, I can tell you.'

'And who was he, do you know?' Dave thought for a while.

'I don't remember his name,.' he said. 'He was a small man... shorter than you... and rather overweight, red-faced, reddish hair. The letter said he was Cotton's assistant.'

'Not likely,' I said. 'I'd take a bet that Cotton didn't know about this.'

Episode 11:

I took the briefcase from the safe and wrapped it in brown paper, and I took it home. 'I'm keeping it here until Cotton comes back,' I told Judy. She wasn't pleased!

'What will you do with it?' She asked me.

'I don't know,' I said. 'But right now I'm going to put it under the bed.' I couldn't keep the story from Mandy any longer, so I explained to her about the briefcase, and the key, and the red-faced man who had claimed to be Cotton's assistant. And I asked her to do something for me. I asked her to go to Cotton's laboratory at the university and find out where he was. Next day, Mandy paid a visit to Cotton's lab, but she didn't find out anything new. 'It's odd,' she told me later. 'They think he must be in Hong Kong... but they're not sure. He didn't tell anyone he was going. There was an important meeting today, and he didn't tell them he wouldn't be there.'

'Who did you speak to?' I asked. 'I spoke to Ben Morris, Cotton's assistant,' she said.

'Ha ha! The attractive Ben Morris, eh? And what was he like?'

'Very nice,' said Mandy. She blushed, and I thought she looked very pretty! 'But he's going to let me know when he hears anything,' she went on.

'He's worried. I'm sure of that.'

'And when are you going out with him?' I wanted to know.

'I'm not!' Mandy said, but I knew she was interested! But it was Henry Cotton who interested me. I did not believe that he had written that letter. Why would he ask for 'a package' and not a briefcase? And I knew that he would not send his driver for something so important. Then how did the man get the disk from Cotton? And why didn't Ben Morris know where Cotton was?
