XVIII | His Confession
Janet went out, out of the Rieomb court, far from the Rieomb court. Her fingers clutching the diary she had brought with her, 'Unread Pages' it read. Janet could not make out the possible reason for naming it that way, maybe it was not meant for anyone to read. But did she care? No.
Reaching out to one of the cafés she pushed the glass door and entered, a sudden chillness spread over her body but it felt nice. She slid down her sleeves and pulled an empty chair and looked around. Musty aroma and coffee fragrance, the tables and chairs were all painted in rich brown, stunning, she thought. Better than where Anissa had taken her. It looked so shabby.
"Good morning ma'am, are you ready to order?"
"Yes, I'll have a medium latte with vanilla syrup for here."
The man bowed and went inside. He had sparkling blue eyes and French accent. He looked stunning in those black trousers and white shirt. Janet shook her head and turned the pages of the diary.
Entry 3:
Dear diary,
Guess whattttt!!! She said, 'you have pretty eyes, I love black.' Oh Godd, I was screaming!! She looked scared for a second then laughed; maybe she understood I was nervous and excited. But I have something to tell you, so... good news or good news? I know right! They are both good! First is, she signed me up for a singing band, I guess the name is INFERNO, I'm so excited! They have heard how I play and when I said I learnt from myself, they looked impressed! YouTube came handy haha ;)But man, you should have listened to her voice! She has the most angelic voice and I'm dying to hear it all over again, 'Wildest Dreams' she sang and aw man, when I played the guitar and she sang, the whole room fell silent, I even saw dad halting in his steps when he was passing by the courtroom. I can never afford to lose her, she has the purest soul and angelic voice. I really can't lose her. Is that love? I don't know. Maybe I'm just crushing on her, maybe it'll go away after a while. But she looks interested in me. Maybe we can give it a chance. Maybe... I don't know. 'WE' sounds different, I don't know but that word feels like it carries a huge load of responsibilities and promises. I don't break promises. And I know she doesn't too! Okay, second good news, she called me out in a coffee shop, the barista there only speaks French.
Janet's heart stopped.
But I don't know how, she speaks French so well! Felt like a date. Okay, bye. I'm sleepy now. And oh dear diary? One more thing, she has the most beautiful eyes. I love Hazel brown...
Janet snapped the diary shut, unusually loud. Her hands shook as she reached to drink water from the tumbler. Hazel brown... she had seen that. Multiple times. Dreamt about that. She had remembered those pain stricken eyes...
"Ma'am, your coffee..." A lady said smiling and she handed a small packet to Janet. Janet looked inside it.
"But I haven't ordered for cupcakes." Janet said confused.
The man who had come to take her order stood beside her, and put her hands on her shoulder, "Actually, we are expecting..." Janet looked at the lady, though the baby bump barely visible, she gave a squeal.
"Congratulations!" Janet smiled.
"Thank you ma'am, we hope you will enjoy our little present. Small arrangement of giveaway for all the people coming here before we shut it down." The man said.
"American?" Janet asked looking at her.
"Yep." The lady giggled. "Hi, I'm Isis."
"Janet Tyler." Janet smiled.
"I'm curious to know from where you've found the diary..." Isis asked taking a seat beside Janet. A sudden uncomforting feeling overcame her as she took the diary closer to herself.
"That diary is of Arthur William, right? The famous badminton player?" Isis asked.
Janet hated the invasion of privacy but she gave a small nod anyway.
"It was lost at the time of investigation." Isis said.
"Huh?"
"There was this girl, who died..." She trailed off, "Don't know if I should be saying this."
Janet did not say anything back, and taking that as a cue the girl continued.
"Her moves, her eyes and her body always screamed passion about badminton. She came here when she was just twelve."
"I know already. She committed suicide..." Janet averted her eyes, "tell me something I don't know." Janet whispered.
"Two things." Isis came closer to her, "One: Talk to Arthur about it. Two: Don't trust anyone, I mean it. Don't trust anyone. Every single soul there is liar. They all have secrets." She whispered in Janet's ear.
Janet wondered if the two 'things' were connected anyhow. She got up grabbing the diary and pushing the glass door, she went out. A bizarre idea crossed her mind; something like diary should be possessed, but even after knowing the diary was with her Arthur didn't bother telling her to return it to him. How was it possible?
She walked on the clear road, her headphones covering her ears. She walked and walked, absent-mindedly, thinking about all the information, sinking them in. But she could swear on her life that she was walking sideways and not in middle. She didn't hear the loud screech behind her and that's when someone harshly pulled her aside, knocking out her breath. Sharp pain sunk in her arm where it was already wounded and her knee trembled in fright and pain.
"I... you..." He breathed.
Janet looked up, she could feel his heart pounding beneath her bruised palm, and she could feel her own heartbeat fastening.
Arthur.
His tired gaze fixed upon hers and then storm arose in those black eyes. He tore off her headphones and threw it away.
"Hey-" Janet gave a shout, and quickly got up but she winced from the pain.
"Shut up."
"What is wrong with you!"
"What is wrong with me? What is wrong with you!?" Arthur shouted, "Were you on a suicide mission today!?"
Janet furrowed her eyebrows.
"I don't remember going in the middle, then why..." Janet wondered out loud.
"Look behind you." Arthur pointed behind her back.
She looked behind her, horrified. Two cars lying in the middle, one upside down and one was burning in the flames. Arthur had saved her from the car crashing on her, but rather than feeling gratitude towards him or be grateful, a surge of panic washed over her.
"Arthur we have to save them!" Janet cried and ran to go but it wasn't long before she felt a pull in her hands.
"Wait... I've called the police and um... the ambulance. My mom is coming in a minute." Arthur said, he was doing a great job of hiding his panic, Janet thought, but she could feel his nervousness. Trembling lips, shaking hands... just he was not crying though Janet was.
Moments later, the area was filled with sound of sirens, the picture was slow motioning in Janet's head as she saw the stretcher being pulled out and fire-fighters extinguish the fire but there didn't remain any good parts left in that car. She saw Mrs. Dubois come out, her hair dishevelled, her dress crumpled. And she came near Arthur and gave him some bucks, francs... to book a cab.
"I'll take your car." She heard Arthur say.
"I'll be needing that-" Mrs. Dubois started.
"You can book a cab yourself." Arthur pointed out, his teeth gritting against each other.
And he handed her over the money and something fell from those notes. Mint gum. Janet picked it up and just as she was going to give it to her, she felt Arthur harshly dragging her through the chaos and pushed her inside the car.
"Wait-" She started but then she saw the face of the lady who was being taken in the stretcher, "ISIS!" Janet screamed. Arthur's head snapped in that direction and he looked aghast.
"Isis!" Janet fumbled through the opening of the door, but Arthur's pulled her back.
"Don't go, I'm sure there are enough doctors." He said starting the engine.
"But that's Isis! She's pregnant!"
"What are you gonna do?! You're not capable of doing anything so just goddamn save yourself first!"
That hit Janet hard and she stayed silent, rooted in her seat.
"How do you know Isis?" Arthur asked reaching the gate of Rieomb court. But neither Janet replied him nor looked at him. She slammed the door hard at his face after getting out.
Janet walked through the hallway, and that's when she felt her arm gripped tight.
"I believe I have asked you a question." The man behind her said. His voice cold.
Janet had never felt that tenacity in his voice and it only fuelled her anger toward him. Who the hell was he to demand answers, when I'm left with nothing but scattered pieces of evidence? When she had asked him about the girl on his phone, he never replied. Janet understood his state of mind and she didn't press him further, and she expected the same. Being forced against something was not on her forte.
"Let go!" She screamed.
"You owe me, Janet! I have saved you."
Janet suddenly laughed a mocking laugh that reverberated in the isolated hallway that sent chills to his spine.
"Go and boast about it big boy."
She freed her hands and pushed her elbow backwards, hitting his chest. He hissed touching his chest but didn't make a sound. Janet turned on her heels and just when she was about to walk away, he whispered.
"Isis is not who you think she is."
Janet scoffed.
"How about we play a game?" Arthur asked, ruffling his hair, "Truth for truth. I tell you one, and you tell yours?"
"Now this is somewhat interesting." Janet smirked as she said. A sudden change washed over her, as if she wasn't able to recognise her own voice, "What time?"
Arthur checked his wrist watch. "Tonight. 10:00 PM. Practice room."
After her training, without wasting any minute she ran towards the practice room. 09:59...
10:00.
The clock struck 10 and she reached there, panting. She looked at her wrist watch, she was on time but she couldn't spot Arthur anywhere. Entering into the room she felt the same chilliness and that eerie feeling of someone's presence. Suddenly the door behind her slammed shut.
"AAAHHH!" She gave a scream. Her mind went through all possibilities, though she was a sports person but she didn't have the ability to take down any man, let alone Arthur. What if he kills her there and disposes her body in the forest below? She'd become a member of the spirits present here, it somewhat made her laugh and as she laughed she felt safe.
"Something funny?" The lights blinked and the entire room lit up. She saw him sitting on one of the benches, one hand holding the badminton racket and another on his hair and he looked at her with those piercing black eyes.
"Geez, never asked for a movie set up." Janet rolled her eyes.
"Closing the door so that we can safely have a talk here..."
"Yeah 'safely'..." Janet added sarcastically.
"And the lights are old so it took some time to light up." He said ignoring her comment.
Janet looked at him, her head cocked to her side. He was wearing a white t- shirt which was almost sticking to his skin due to sweating and there was something written on it 'I'm a KILLER.'
"Nice choice for a t shirt." Janet said before even thinking.
"Thanks, gift from a dear friend." He said and casually tipped back resting his shoulders. "You know her."
Janet furrowed her eyebrows in confusion. Arthur having friends? That's rare. And Janet knowing her? That's more like impossible.
"Isis."
Janet wanted to gasp, but nothing came out. Perhaps she was too tired to express any emotion. Her stomach growled a little, after the exhausting playing she didn't eat anything. And now her head was spinning.
"Did you eat anything?" Arthur asked.
"Look Mr. William... we really don't have to prolong it or get under each other's nose. We are here for a reason and I want it to be over quick." Janet kept her tone formal. But the next second her stomach gave a loud growl embarrassing herself.
"Right." He muttered, his eyes contained that gaze that said I-am-not-shitting-around-either.
He took a packet and gave it to her. "Eat."
"Arthur-" She tried to say but he shushed her down.
"It's yours. You left it in the car." He said handing her the packet of cupcakes.
"Oh, than-"
"Alright, so let's begin."
Janet turned her head away in shame, but when she looked at him again, her gaze was firmer.
"Let's start with you Arthur, tell me about your story." Janet said, sitting beside her.
Arthur looked at her confused. He expected her to ask something like 'Who was that girl on your phone' or 'How do you know Isis?' or 'What's your relationship with Wren?' Why was she even asking that?
"Excuse me?" He asked getting up. Janet didn't bother go after him. "I thought you said not to get under each other's nose?"
"I thought you said truth for truth?" Janet blinked feigning innocence.
No. That can't be. He'd never spill out things that he kept to himself over all those years. Never.
He started walking away.
"Your loss Arthur. You wouldn't know many things." Janet said moving her thumb over her nails.
"You don't have much to give Janet. So, it wouldn't matter." He said.
"That will not explain me having your diary, Arthur."
"But the pages are torn, aren't they-" The words came out before he could stop them and his eyes widened realizing he spilled one of the truths.
Janet laughed.
"So you did that." Janet sighed, "You know I heard there was a girl who committed suicide, not that she was good at playing anyway-"
She couldn't complete her sentence as she saw Arthur taking long strides toward her and it was not long before she was held by the collar and almost choked by him.
"Shut up!" He shouted, "You know NOTHING about her!"
"And you know?" Janet asked.
"Yes. Yes I do because-" Arthur started but stopped short by the muffling of her hands over his mouth.
"This way you will spill everything Arthur. I know your weak points and where to hit, and you're falling right into my trap. Don't give me spoilers Arthur, I need the whole story. I need to know." Janet tried her best to sound calm but from inside she was shaking. She'd missed the chance of what Arthur was accidentally going to spill. What if he refused to answer?
"Alright."
A word. A single word made both of them freeze. Both were equally shocked. Janet was thrown across the room and she winced.
"Tell me Arthur, tell me the full story. Tell me if I can trust Anissa." Janet said slowly getting up.
Arthur's gaze snapped to her side, he clenched his fists and snapped his eyes shut before whispering, "Anyone but her."
"Why?" Janet asked.
"Because she's the reason why Eva died." Arthur whispered.
Janet heard it. She freaking heard it. She heard him call her name. The name that rolled down from his tongue like a evening prayer. Her heart ached with an unknown feeling. And then she gasped, playing in her mind what Arthur had just told now.
Anissa? Janet always felt something odd about her, something different. But... she did this?
"Do you have any proof?" Janet asked.
"Do you think I'd be sitting here right now, if I had the proof?"
Right. That was really a dumb question.
"Anissa is witch you don't know. She ruined my life, my mother's life, my father's life-"
"But-"
"Yeah, I know what you're gonna say."
"No, I mean-"
"Yes, my mother and Anissa still has a pretty bonding. That's why I hate her. She hurt her so much, everytime, everyday. But still she'd look out for her, side with her and blame me. I hate her. I hate her for that."
"Wha-"
"And I really had a hard time thinking whether it was a real bond or just a fake one. But then I realized something..." Arthur paused.
"What?" Janet whispered, terror in her voice.
"They both are just the same." He bit out.
Janet couldn't understand what he told but didn't try to stop him either.
"When I was young, Anissa had tortured me in many ways. Her most commonly used weapon was hurting my mother. She knew what my mother meant to me, and she also knew that mom would never raise her voice at her and she always used to hurt mom, both mentally and physically." Arthur took a deep breath and continued, "Then I witnessed something day after day which grew my suspicion about her more."
"What?" Janet asked impatiently.
"That she's a witch." Arthur whispered.
Probably a lot of mistakes are there but will try to edit it soon!
Any thoughts?
