Chapter 3
It had been nearly 2 weeks since the diner, and Jessica had found herself blissfully buried in work, so much so that she barely noticed the days continue to grow between the last time she and Brad had spoken.
It had been 2 weeks of milking, making cheeses, weaning a calf for selling and another for the fair. A tractor had broken down, and with many hours between her, Alex and a few helpful farmhands- and a few more hundred dollars- she found it in use again raising her spirits while lowering her bank account.
May had relaxed since arriving, the guilt of barging into Jessica's life dissipating as she began to pass her resume to some of the higher-class restaurants in town. This resulted in Alex bringing her to town more and more often, and them often finding dinner at some of the restaurants or ones nearby.
Jessica was glad to see the two friends getting along and was quite pleased to see Alex also stop his excessive flirting in favor of nearly looking goofy at the very mention of May.
Jessica's life long best friend may have made poor decisions in the past for lovers, but if she and Alex followed the path they currently seemed to be happily going down, Jessica was going to finally be comfortable and not worry about Mays future in the aspect of romance.
"I just cannot fathom such a lifestyle," Alex was saying shaking his head after May had divulged to why she didn't own a car," Walking around the big old city, not having your own way of carrying your groceries or bring people places, relying on the bus to take you on their time."
May laughed," Yes, well I much enjoy public transit, and I don't have a car payment! Or maintenance! Or insurance and heaven knows I don't have to fight traffic or find a parking space. It just ends up being easier for me in the end."
Alex shrugged, never one to argue about other people's life choices, but still shook his head," Well I can get behind some of that. But I don't believe I could ever fully give up my freedom to just get up and go. And haul all I want to!"
"Why the big debate on transportation suddenly," Jessica teased as she went to join the 2 in the front room. It was late, and rain had been falling hard all day. She had just finished her shower, hot on her cold frame and sore muscles, and was joining them to where Great British baking show lay paused in the background in favor of the couple's debate.
Alex grinned," May here just got a call for an interview! Tomorrow at 2. "
Jessica had an idea where this was leading to; it was CSA day at the market, and a very lucrative one at that seeing as how it was to be the first Friday. Every Friday at the beginning of every month, there were many talented artists that exhibited their works for sale, hire, or to just get their name spread around. Local farmers had teamed up with the artists years before Jessica had arrived to the small town to give away free cheese and wine and other small goods from their farms to feed the consumers that where there to eye the art and perhaps purchase a piece.
Jessica was at first reluctant, she recalled, to give away a large amount of her hard worked brie cheese for free. It hurt that first time, too, seeing it gobbled down without much thought by many at the show.
But then she also recalled at the following CSA day there had been a few more people to her new booth. And then their friends. And then someone needing something for a potluck.
It only grew from there.
It being first Friday CSA day at the market made it so Jessica needed Alex. So he wouldn't be available during midday market, since that would be one of the busiest times for the farmers.
"I am letting her borrow my car," he said seeing her train of thought and where it had lead," I figured I could unload the produce, have some of the lettuce and herbs under Jackie's table and ours to keep cool so it is out of the sun, and then we can load everything back when May returns."
Jessica felt relieved at the solution that avoided her having to play 'boss' and direct him to stay and May potentially getting a very expensive taxi," Oh that sounds great! I hope you don't mind wakin' up early May. We start early for set up and to be ready for the day. "
"Oh Jess," May smiled," I may not enjoy it much, but I did work for a bakery for several years- if you do recall. I had to be up at the crack of dawn-before then!- to bake them donuts."
"I didn't know you made donuts too!" Alex exclaimed and they trailed down another conversation about past work history and blundered career attempts.
Jessica stayed for a short while, finishing the episode they had been on with the two periodically making conversation or comment, Jessica herself chiming in occasionally, before she decided to call it a night.
"I'm exhausted. I'll see you two in the morning," she said giving a back-popping stretch and heading to her room.
Despite what she said she couldn't help lay awake.
It was one of the few free times she had at the moment and so her head filled fast with thoughts of Brad. They were both fools for not exchanging numbers, she decided, as for how likely would it be if they ran into each other? She had thought to return to Mr.Fred's but with so much prep and the worry over the suspiciously silent group who wished to purchase her farm, she had not found the chance to.
"Well at least I know he is in this town," she thought as she began to slowly drift off to the patter of rain," and where he likes to eat out. I'm certain we'll run into each other."
