VII. Kindergarten Boyfriend
VP tries to talk Shelby into killing Julchen again, and Shelby finds out he is carrying around a loaded gun. Realizing how unstable he is, Shelby breaks up with him. They argue, and he accidentally points the gun at her. She storms out, leaving him alone.
VP confronts Julchen with evidence that she and Katyusha where friends when they were children, and blackmails her into getting all the kids at the school to sign a petition declaring a holiday in remembrance of the victims of suicide.
Katyusha, having overheard VP and Julchen's conversation, in which some nasty insults had been directed at the blonde, now walks down the street, the sun already setting.
"There was a boy I met in Kindergarten." Katyusha sang, walking slowly as she grabbed onto her elbow with her other hand. Her watery blue eyes were trained on the sidewalk. "He was sweet, he said that I was smart. He was good at sports and people liked him. And at nap time once, we shared a mat." Katyusha smiled slightly at the memory. "I didn't sleep, I sat and watched him breathing. Watched him dream for nearly half an hour. Oooooooh..." she frowned, closing her eyes, "then he woke up."
She took a deep breath. It wasn't fair to think of him negatively now that he was gone. She moved on to another memory. "He pulled a scab off one time playing kickball. Kissed me quick, and pressed it in my hand. I took that scab and put it in a locket..." she smiled, and laying a hand on her chest, "All year long I wore it near my heart... He didn't care if I was thin or pretty. And he was mine until we hit first grade. Ooooooooh..." she grimaced, "then he woke up."
A tear rolled down her cheek and she wrapped her arms around her stomach, still walking as she looked up to the sky. "Last night I dreamed a horse with wings, flew down into my home room! On its back, there he sat, and he held out his arms!" She clasped her hands together under her chin, and smiled as the happy thought of her dream overtook her. "So we sailed above the gym! Across the faculty parking lot... My Kindergarten boyfriend and I... And a horse with wings."
Her smile faded slowly as she drifted back to reality. Her blonde bangs hung in front of her eyes as she stiffened in an effort not to cry. "Now we're all grown up and we know better. Now we recognize the way things are... Certain boys are just for kindergarten..." She sucked in a sharp breath, tears rolling down her pale cheeks. "Certain girls are meant to be alone..."
She paused, looking around. The sidewalk she was following had led her to the Old Mill Bridge. Cars zipped by, honking. Katyusha grabbed a piece of folded paper out of her pocket, staring down at it with hopeful eyes.
"But I believe that any dream worth having... Is a dream that should not have to end." She sucked in another deep breath, puffing out her chest. "So I'll build a dream that I can live in!" She stepped up onto the ledge of the bridge, causing several more cars to honk. "AND THIS TIME I'M NEVER WAKING UP!" She turned, yelling to the bystanders in their vehicles. They were now beginning to slow down.
She clutched the note close to her chest, her face flushed. "AND WE'LL SOAR ABOVE THE TREES, OVER CARS AND CROQUET LAWNS! PAST THE CHURCH AND THE LAKE, AND THE TRI-COUNTY MALL! WE WILL FLY THROUGH THE DAWN TO A NEW KINDERGARTEN!" She cried out, smiling slightly at the thought. A few cars were now stopping. Katyusha sniffed, turning to the drop off. She swore she could see Jett reaching out to her in the distance. She blushed, reaching out to him. "Where nap time is centuries long..."
Jett's image faded, and Katyusha's hand fell, her face donning a disappointed frown once more. She held the paper to her heart as she turned to face the road again. "Ooooooohh..." Someone got out of their car. "Ooooooohh..." They were shouting something. Katyusha could no longer hear as she watched them wave frantically at her. "Ooooooooooohh..." She closed her eyes. "Oooohh..."
She let herself relax, and fell backwards.
