II. Seventeen
As the funeral cleared out, it left VP and Shelby alone among the pews. He looked at her with his arms held up slightly, as if completely amazed. His smile was knowing and cocky. He pretended to sniff the air. "What is that? That smell in the air-" He sniffed again as Shelby scowled at him. "Is that... Tolerance?" He began towards her, his eyes serious. "Acceptance, love- you could even say it's a good day in Sherwood, Ohio. You're welcome, town!" He saluted to no one in particular, and Shelby shook her head.
"Hey, you don't have to be so smug about it." She said. Her facial expression was contorted as if she had a really bitter taste in her mouth.
"Wow, I love that you stay humble." He said, leaning forward and kissing her. "So who's next?" Shelby backed away in disbelief. "Julchen Beilschmidt? She's the one that started that threeway rumor. I've been underlining meaningful passages in her copy of Moby Dick if you know what I mean."
"No!" Shelby shouted firmly. "No, I do not accept this, we've already killed three people. This ends right here, right now!"
"Or what?" VP asked in exasperation.
"I'll..." She bit her lip. "I'll break up with you."
He stared at her for several seconds, contemplating the consequences of her words. "Every war... has causalities. That doesn't mean it's not worth fighting." He stated firmly, before pacing away from her. "What? What, you'd rather go to jail? Hm? And give a free pass to the thugs that are hurting people? EVIL FUCKS, THAT MAKE LIFE SO UNBEARABLE THAT YOU CAN'T EVEN LIVE IN THE WORLD ANYMORE!"
She began towards him. "V..." They stared at each other, still feet apart. As the silence ate at them, Shelby spoke again. "How did your mother die?"
VP turned away from second, rubbing his chin, before turning back to Shelby. "You really wanna know?"
"Yeah." She assured him.
"... My dad... Said it was an accident. But she knew what she was doing. She walked into that building... Two minutes before dad blew it up. She waved at me out the window... And then... Ka-boom. She left me."
Shelby looked down to her feet, wrapping her arms around her stomach. "I'm really sorry, VP, I-"
"It's okay." VP smiled. "The pain gives me clarity. You and I are special, we have a lot of work to do."
She grimaced. "What work?"
"Making the world a decent place for people who are decent!" He exclaimed.
She walked towards him. "When does it end?"
"WHEN EVERY ASSHOLE IS DEAD!" He screamed right in her face, causing her to angrily push him away.
They stared at each other in both shock and anger, before Shelby glared at the ground, clenching her fists. "Fine, we're damaged. Badly damaged." She looked back up at VP. "But that does not make us wise. We're not special, we're not different. We don't choose who lives or dies." She took a small step forward. "Let's be normal. See bad movies. Sneak a beer, and watch TV. We'll bake brownies, or go bowling-" she sniffed, and VP's eyes softened, "don't you want a life with me?
"Can't we be seventeen? That's all I want to do... if you could let me in, I could be good with you." She took a big step forward. "People hurt us,"
"Or they vanish." VP stated, looking to the side.
"And you're right, that really blows." Shelby smiled. "But we let go,"
"Take a deep breath," VP looked back to Shelby again.
"Then go buy some summer clothes. We'll go camping,"
"Play some poker," he smiled slightly.
"And we'll eat some chili fries." She walked towards him. "Maybe prom night?"
He began towards her as well. "Maybe dancing?"
When they met, Shelby grabbed his face in her hands gently. "Don't stop looking in my eyes!"
"Your eyes." VP sang softly.
"Can't we be seventeen?" They sang together. "Is that so hard to do? If you could let me in, I could be good with you! Let us be seventeen, if we've still got the right! So what's it gonna be?"
"I wanna be with you!" Shelby urged.
"I wanna be with you!" VP echoed.
"Wanna be with you, tooooonniiggghhtttttt!" They sang together, holding the last note for a long time, before Shelby's hands left VP's face and their hands found each other, their fingers intertwining.
"Yeah, we're damaged." Shelby muttered.
"Badly damaged." VP agreed.
"But your love's too good to lose." They stated.
"Hold me tighter." Shelby sang.
VP wrapped his arms around her. "Even closer."
"I'll stay if I'm what you choose." Shelby said.
VP placed his chin on the top of her head. "Can't we be seventeen?"
"If I am what you choose."
"If we've still got the right..."
"'Cause your the one I choose..."
VP backed up slightly, lifting up Shelby's chin so they were looking into each other's eyes. "You're the one I choose."
"... you're the one I choose." They sang, before leaning forward and kissing.
