Chapter 1. Side job
I sometimes wondered what had gotten my mind to start working on this particular base. It wasn't the job I was going to keep for the rest of my life. It was a side job now I was in college and needed more money. I walked through the door of the main entrance that led to the lobby. A huge open space and a simple design. It's normally crowded with people. Especially in the morning when soldiers switch shifts. Some go home and some arrive. They all gather here, show their ID before they're allowed to pass. I'm not a soldier. Just an assistant doing some paperwork. It's not really exciting, sometimes even a little boring.
My work is boring, but my work environment isn't. Especially with Sideswipe around. He's the most energetic of the mechs, very naughty, stubborn and arrogant. He's also a combat instructor. I've watched him train with other mechs. He's skilled and fast. Almost as if he's ten steps ahead of his opponent. The moment he met me, we instantly had a click, but he's also a master at annoying the heck out of me, which is the case a lot lately. I have been struggling a lot lately with him. At this point, I could just snap his neck.
I made my way over the second floor. It's way too early for Sideswipe to be already awake and pranking people. I opened the door of the workspace that I shared with four other people and sat down behind my desk. I am always a bit early, so I have the first 45 minutes alone. I settled down and switched on the computer. I had quite some work to do for this week. I hadn't been here all week due to exams.
As my lunch break started, I was wrapping up some work as the door opened. 'Hi, sweetcheeks.' I rolled my eyes at the tune in his voice. Sideswipe halted in front of my desk. 'Are you coming?' he asked. I looked up. He's in an 'okay' mood today, but you never know. 'Almost.' He tapped impatiently with his foot on the ground while looking around. Before I could ask him to stop, he grabbed the cabling of the computer and unplugged it. My screen became black immediately. 'Sideswipe! I was about to save it!' I yelled and jumped up. 'Yeah and it was taking too long. You should've saved it five minutes ago! You know I come every lunch break to pick you up to spend time with me, you know and you also know I hate waiting.'
I was boiling. 'I am gonna murder you one day.' He smirked. 'Are you coming.' I snitched my jacket off the chair and passed him. 'Let's head into town, grab a bite somewhere.' I shook my head. 'You know I only have 30 minutes, Sideswipe.' I sighed defeated. 'I know, but we can make it back in time. I promise.' He promised a lot of things, and he barely keeps any promises. 'I haven't seen you all week, okay? I missed you.' It surprised me that he said that. 'You missed your scapegoat?' He snorted. 'No, I missed you... as a friend.' I smiled weakly.
If you get on his wrong side, you can better stop working here, but I had to admit that despite his horrible mood swings and annoying stubbornness, he can be a good friend sometimes. He has never hurt me on purpose or hurt my feelings. He's just bloody annoying lately. 'I had exams. I thought Lennox would tell you,' I said quietly. 'Yeah... well, he didn't. If you give me your phone number, we can text and hang out.' I huffed. I had considered giving him my phone number, but I didn't want him to spam me all the time when he's bored. 'Well, if you stop unplugging my computer, I might give it to you someday.' All I got was a huff.
My anger subsided as we neared the Autobot hanger. 'I have a date this weekend.' Sideswipe glanced at me. 'You?' he laughed. 'Yeah and I am nervous... stop laughing, jackass!' I nudged him before hopping in his alt-mode. 'Do you get a photo of your guy?' I rolled my eyes and grabbed my phone. 'What did he have to do to get your phone number?' I didn't answer his question and showed him a photo. 'He looks like a stuffed potato. I'm tellin' ya... it's gonna get boring.' He started his engine. 'You are basing that on someone's looks?' He hummed and drove off.
'What are you going to wear? This N.E.S.T shirt?' he taunted. 'No, a crop top I guess...' Sideswipe snorted. Sideswipe sometimes tends to get a little mean when he's jealous and I know he is because he's been bucking me to wear something different for as long as I can remember. 'Ah, a crop top you refuse to wear for me,' he muttered. 'Sideswipe... you know I can't wear that to work,' I sighed. He repeated my words childishly. 'What about you? Did you get laid again?' He huffed. 'No, not recently. Bit of a shame, huh?' I shrugged. Sideswipe glanced at me. I can talk to him about everything. He doesn't mind and he's open. It's almost scary how open he is about some subjects. 'I don't want details... just wondering if your love life is just as exciting as mine.'
'Your love life is boring. You're still a virgin.' I huffed and stared out of the window. 'Nothing is wrong with that, Sideswipe. I am not a hooker.' He hummed and parked in town. 'Yeah, yeah... you want to save it for someone special,' he mocked and cut his engine before turning towards me. 'I am going to a club this weekend, maybe I can find a girl there.' I shook my head and unbuckled. 'I bet...' I hopped out and closed his door,–– looking around to see where he took me. 'Why don't you join me?' A frown spread over my face. 'Join you?' I repeated. 'Yeah, go with me to the club... it'll be fun!' I shook my head firmly. 'You know I don't go to clubs, Sideswipe.'
'Maybe you should. I can't think of a better place for you to meet people. Not the boring stuffed potato type of guys. The cool guys, like me!' He pointed at himself with a huge smirk splattered over his face. 'I appreciate the offer, Sideswipe, but you know I have college.' He gave me a look. 'Boring!' He gestured for me to follow him. 'What kind of sandwich do you want?' he asked, pointing at the board of a takeaway restaurant. The line was quite large, I doubted I would be back in time. 'I am going for the fried chicken sandwich,' he said, answering himself. 'Grilled cheese sandwich please.' I flashed him a smile. 'You're always so polite.' He rolled his eyes. 'Every time you say... 'Thank you' or 'please' to me, you have to give me a dollar. I bet I can go to Disneyland by the end of the month.' I nudged him.
He crossed his arms and was quiet for a minute. He's never quiet for longer than a minute. 'Anyway, if you are bored this weekend... you know where to find me.' I smiled and looked at the line in front of me. 'Any tips for my date Saturday?' He laughed. 'It's going to be awkward and boring... I can give you that on a note.' I gave him a look. 'Some useful tips, Sideswipe. I don't have much experience with guys in general. Give me something... what do guys like?' Sideswipe ran his hand through his brown hair. 'What they like? Sex.' I poked his ribs. 'Sideswipe! I mean it!' He chuckled. 'Just be yourself and get rid of the glasses.'
'What is wrong with my glasses?'
He shrugged. 'They're cute, but not hot. You have contact lenses right?' I nodded. 'Wear those instead... get some highlights in your hair, add some eyeshadow and lipstick, make sure your tummy is exposed to show off that divine body of yours. Maybe something with a butt lift?' He looked at my ass. 'Oh, and high heels... unless your guy is small, then wear sneakers.' I raised a brow. 'Do you have a push-up bra?' I shook my head. 'I mean... cup B is nice, but if you want to be extra hot... we can make a stop at the bra shop down the street if you'd like.' He gestured at it. 'No, no... I'll be fine. I need to go back in time.' I looked at the time on my phone.
'I think you would look amazing if you follow my advice, but if you don't and keep to your... old self... It's fine too. If he doesn't fall in love with you the way you are, then I guess he's not the right one for you. Just be yourself... don't try to be me.' I huffed. 'I don't want to be you, Sideswipe.' He wrapped his arm around my shoulders. 'Good.'
'Are my glasses hideous?'
He chuckled. 'No, like I said... they make you cute but if you want to look hot...' he trailed off. 'What if I don't have anything to talk about? I hate it when it becomes quiet,' I mumbled. 'If you enjoy your date then I can assure there won't be silence.' I hummed. We were next in line and he ordered. 'I grabbed my debit card. 'No! I pay.' He pushed me aside. 'Again?' he didn't reply and paid. 'Who paid the last six times?' he asked as we stepped aside to wait. 'I did but–' he cut me off. 'Exactly, which means I pay now. End of discussion.' I sucked in a breath and grasped his hand, rubbing over a healing cut. It happened during training last month. 'What do you think of the new rookies?'
'The rookies... you mean the useless ants?' he scolded. I chuckled and squeezed his hand. 'Meanie.' He met my gaze. 'What shall I say? I hate two of them...' he began. 'So? You will bully them until they quitte working here?'
'Yeah, basically...'
We got our sandwiches and ate while walking over to his alt-mode. I glanced at him as he ate. Sometimes, I didn't know why he chose to be friends with me. We are so different and yet the minute he saw me, he started to adore me. I don't have any friends here, so having at least one person I can rely on is nice.
He drove back to base and parked in the Autobot hanger. 'I gotta run. Thanks for the lunch.'
'I get one dollar from you.' I huffed and hopped out. 'It's called being polite, Sideswipe. I've to run. I'm 5 minutes late.' I closed his door and walked off.
