CHAPTER ONE
"dear alexis rivera"
╚ ——————————————— ╝
LEX RIVERA LIKE TO PAINT an expression on her face every morning when she first woke.
Mostly, it was a hard look in her eyes that she carried throughout the day, making her lips purse and her face seem to rest in a scowl whenever someone's gaze passed over her. If you happened to catch the girl's eyes when one of these days were in progression, it was guaranteed that you would look away immediately after, cheeks flushing as you averted your gaze and prayed that she wouldn't take your glance the wrong way.
Sometimes, however, it was a mere shine that passed over her face, a small smirk on her pink lips that made you wonder whether she was happy or simply... well, plotting.
That was how she looked today, staring across the hall at a dark haired boy; chewing the edge of her pencil with a glow illuminating her eyes.
"Oh no-" there was a soft banging sound as Constance Cameron's shoulder hit the locker door next to her friend, raising an eyebrow as her dark hair swished over her shoulders. "You've got that look on your face, like you're planning a murder."
Lex shook her head, her gaze never wavering. "Not murder."
"That doesn't do much to reassure me." Connie sighed deeply, shooting a small glare at a group of freshman girls who began to whisper when they passed the pair. Lex was completely immune to whispers at this point in her life, but Connie still tried to protect her from them - from the rumors - whenever she could. She followed her best friend's gaze, a disappointed hum brushing past her lips as she realized what she had her eyes on. "Scott McCall, seriously?"
"Isn't it hilarious?" Lex finally turned around, grinning in a way that was just evil enough to make Connie uncomfortable. "He looks like his puppy dog just died or some shit-"
"Bitch, I know for a fact that you cried for two months when your dog died."
"Why would you bring that up?" Lex scowled, crossing her arms defiantly over her stomach. "I was trying to be a bitch, Con, no need to attack me with my tragic childhood. Also interrupt me again and I make a blanket out of your hair. Moving on-" she gestured a perfectly manicured hand towards the boy, who was blindly staring into his locker, not making a move to extract anything from it at any time soon. "Allison Argent broke up with him. Or the other way around. This is the chance I have been waiting for since last year."
The Cameron girl shot her friend a judgmental look, "you're a psycho."
"Sticks and stones may break my-"
"Oh hush," she cut her off, although a smile was hinting at her lips. "Just tell me your villainous plan and we can move on with our lives."
Lex shrugged, her lips pulled into a pout as if it would make her face more innoncent. "Well I am truly offended that you think I would take advantage of some poor boy right after a break up."
"Lexi, you've had your jaw locked on that boy for nearly an entire year now, forgive me for imagining the worst." Connie mused with a slight roll of her eyes, tilting her chin upwards. "You have five minutes tops, I have calculus and you have cheer practice."
The Mexican girl just grinned deviously at her friend, reaching over to twirl a piece of her hair, "just observe, my dear friend."
And then she sauntered away, the red of her skirt bringing attention to her tanned legs as it swished around her thighs. She had her gaze zeroed in on the boy as she walked, accidentally shoving a boy who got in her way into a wall and not stopping until she was leaning against the lockers right next to Scott McCall.
If you asked Lex exactly what it was about the boy that she was so intrigued by, she wouldn't be able to give you a straight answer. She was never one to have small little crushes on people - especially not on boys. Boys were much too unpredictable, and she did not have good experiences with them in the past. Boys expected to get what they want even after hearing 'no' be spoken one hundred times. Boys tended to disrespect her when they realized that she wouldn't change for them.
Not all boys, but enough.
Scott McCall was different in her eyes. Maybe it was because he went from a nerdy kid who used to lend her bio notes, to the co-captain of the lacrosse team in less than twenty-four hours... or maybe it was because there was some form of electricity encircling his head, making her nerves stand on edge... Scott was something out of the ordinary, that's for sure.
Luckily enough, so was Lex.
"Well, it's a shame to see a face like that look so sad," the girl mused, making him jump as he turned to see who was speaking. When he caught sight of Lex, he relaxed somewhat, and took a step back to shut his locker. Lex grinned, "what's got you frowning, McCall?"
The boy gave a miniscule shake of his head, shrugging his shoulders. "Nothing," he said, although his tone wasn't all that convincing. "I'm fine."
"Said every single person who isn't fine." She shot him a pointed look, cocking an eyebrow. Her eyes held a glint similar to one you may see when the sun hits an iron sword, something that Scott noticed when he looked down at her. "So why don't you just tell me and I don't have to be nosy any longer?"
Scott furrowed his eyebrows, "or you could just... not be nosy in the first place."
"Well what's the fun in that?"
Scott laughed, ducking his head and making a small sense of triumph well in Lex's chest. The bell rang, and she straightened her back, "so, sob story?"
"It's not a sob story," he shook his head, looking at the girl and catching her disbelieving expression. "It's not! Just a breakup."
Lex didn't really know what to say next. She had thought she would have to push a little harder to get the boy to confess his situation, so she was slightly taken aback at how easily he let the information go. Her lips parted slightly, "well, fuck."
"What?" The boy demanded, turning to fall into step with her as they walked towards the locker rooms. Neither of them had class next period, since Lex was cheering and Scott had lacrosse. "That wasn't the reaction I was anticipating-"
"No, I just momentarily blacked out from the scent of your hair gel," she held up a finger, making Scott pull a face. The raven haired girl finally got her thoughts in check, turning to the boy and pulling a face. "How long ago did you break up?"
"Before the summer."
"Dios mío-" she shook her head, "and you're still moping around like the National Sports Federation came forward and said that lacrosse was made up by a bunch of drunk guys in a basement?"
Scott looked offended, "I don't mope!"
"Really? Because you're frowning so much it's beginning to make your jawline look like the two sides actually match."
"Are you here for a reason? Or just to insult me?"
That made Lex smile. She smoothed out her skirt, before pulling the sides of her jacket tighter against her hips. She could smell the dull scent of sweat coming from the door of the boy's locker room when the door was pulled open by a small boy with red hair, and scrunched up her nose. "You should consider it an honor to be insulted by me, McCall-" she flashed him a small grin to signify that she was joking, before continuing. "But if I may, can I give you some advice?"
He sighed, an edge of incredulity seeping through his tone. "Sure."
"You have to move on, dude." She actually punched his shoulder, just because she panicked at how she accidentally called him 'dude'. Mentally cursing herself out, she forced a passive expression, and continued; "what do you think Allison thinks of you if you're still hungover for her after months? Or better yet, what everyone else does?"
He stared at her, his eyes deep with indistinguishable emotion. "I never thought I'd live to see the day where Alexis Rivera cares about what others think."
"Oh, I don't give two shits-" she put a hand on her chest. "At least, not what they think about me personally. But me as a whole?" She gave a little laughed, tucking a strand of hair behind her ears. "It's important to have an image McCall. What's yours?" She tilted her head to the side, a small and sarcastic pout on her lips. "The nerd turned lacrosse captain who has a D in English and can't get over his ex?"
Scott's jaw clenched, only making Lex's smirk widen. She reached up to pinch his cheek, humming. "Aw, he does get mad."
"I'm not mad." He defended, his eyes darting towards the locker room door as if contemplating if he could make a run for it and get away. He looked back at her, actual curiousity on his face as he noted just how relaxed Lex appeared. "Hypothetically, if you were to give me advice on how to... fix that. What would you say?"
She observed him for a moment, her calculating gaze making goosebumps rise on the boy's arms. Slowly, the edge in her eyes disappeared, replaced with a satisfied glow as she grinned, showcasing her perfectly straight teeth.
"I'd say you need to move on."
And then she turned and walked away, her shoulders back and her heart beating contently in her chest; leaving Scott to watch from afar.
***
THERE WAS NO GREATER feeling in life than being weightless in the air.
It was as if, for a split second, all of your problems could dissipate. You didn't need to worry about your life, or anything nagging at the back of your mind, because it was all cancelled out by the rush in your ears. Flying was Lex's favorite part of cheerleading, because for that one beautiful moment, she didn't have to pretend anymore. She could leave her troubles behind - on the ground.
And then you land, safe in the arms of your companions, and it all ends as quickly as it begins.
Lex was breathing heavily when the boys set her feet gently on the ground, sending them a grateful smile. She didn't usually get too winded cheering, having perfected her breathing techniques years before, but she was still preoccupied by her conversation with Scott.
She couldn't help herself, the boy was a special case. At least, in her eyes he was.
Her eyes followed him as he ran back to the bench to exchange words with Coach Finstock. The wind ruffled her ponytail, making loose strands of hair dart across her eyes, pulling her back to the present. She turned on her heel, clapping her hands together as her eyes drifted over her team. "Is there anything we haven't gone over today?"
A small blonde at the back raised her hand, "did we go over the opening for Nationals?"
"Yes, Debbie, that was literally the first thing we did."
The girl's voice was quiet, "actually, my name is Daisy-"
"Anyone else?"
She was met with silence, so the girl gave a satisfied nod. "Alright, the hour's up so you better run to get to class or you will be late."
"Fuck I have chemistry-" one boy yelled, before literally taking off in a dead sprint across the field. Lex laughed, triggering the rest of the group to begin to make their way back to the school. Fall in Beacon Hills was never too cold, but Lex still took her hair down to try and preserve as much warmth as possible. She crossed her arms, leaning her weight to the side as she waited for lacrosse to be over. She knew Scott probably though she was crazy, and the truth? She was. And now, she had an idea, and she knew that she had to at least give it a shot.
As soon as the boys began walking across the field, she jogged over. It took her a moment to figure out which one was Scott, but when she did, she reached over and tapped his arm. "Hey! McCall!"
The boy turned around, pulling off his helmet and making his hair stick up awkwardly in all directions. Lex nearly smiled at the sight, but then he spoke up, "Alexis?"
"Lex." She corrected, before stepping closer and giving the boy a quick once over. "I was thinking about our little conversation earlier."
"Yeah, so was I."
"Good, because I have a proposition for you." She squared her shoulders. "You know what I said about fixing your image?"
The boy nodded cautiously.
"Well, what's the best way to do that?" She noticed Scott opening his mouth to respond, and held up a finger. "That was a rhetorical question, my answer is the only correct one." She took a deep breath, gesturing with her hands as she did do, before resting them on her hips and smiling. "Move on. Date someone else."
Scott chuckled lightly, running a hand through his hair. "Yeah? And who do you have in mind?"
She plastered a challenging expression on her face, her cheeks flushed from her workout and her eyebrows raised. "Me."
"You- wait, what?"
Lex smiled again, this time at how utterly adorable the dumbfounded expression on his face was. "What, could you not hear me through all of the shit you put in your hair?" She gestured to herself, "you could date me. I'm hot, I have a good reputation, and I'm pretty sure I'm the exact opposite of Miss. Allison Argent."
Scott pulled a face, "what's that supposed to mean?"
"Nothing bad if that's what you're thinking." She ran her fingers through her hair, "I like Allison, she's sweet. Which just proves my point, as last year I was voted 'most likely to burn someone's house down' by the squad during our mock graduation ceremony." She caught his confused look, and dismissed it with a wave of her hand. "We have one every year, but that's not the point."
"I'm sorry, I'm confused-" he held up a hand, "you want... to date me?"
The urge to roll her eyes was becoming almost irresistable. God knows Scott McCall was adorable, but he didn't have the quickest wit. "Yes, wanna hear it in Spanish? Deberías salir conmigo."
The boy pursed his lips, "have you been talking to Stiles lately by chance?"
"What? No, he hates me. Anyway-" she noticed that she was talking with her hands again, and shoved them into the pockets of her jacket. "It's not like we'd actually be together, just pretending to the public. I can see pros for both of us, can't you?"
"I mean-" Scott dragged out the words for what seemed like an eternity, before biting his lip. "I guess it kind of makes sense."
"It makes perfect sense," she gently tuggd on his bicep to make him walk, the two falling into step, making their way back to the school. "You get to clean up your image, I get to have the captain of the lacrosse team as my arm-candy." She grinned coyly, "and being my boyfriend really isn't all that hard. You just have to look cute and not do anything that could incriminate me."
"Let me say something-" he stopped, gently brushing his hand over her arm to get her to face him. He stared down at her intensely, his dark eyes making her heartbeat increase, although she was mentally praying that he wouldn't notice. "We fake-date, we get what we want... but what if I don't want it?"
"Me, or the whole 'reputation' thing?"
Scott blushed, "the reputation thing."
"Then that's your choice, McCall, and I would respect that." She shrugged, "Allison would still think you're a psycho, but I wouldn't."
He smiled slightly, "Allison wouldn't-" He began, before his words died at the look he recieved from Lex. He cleared his throat. "I don't know, isn't this a bad idea?"
Lex shrugged, the wind blowing her hair behind her back, the darkness caressing her shoulders and making her face look bright. "Yes, and?"
The boy groaned, pinching the bridge of his nose. Lex watched him expectantly, her heart hammering at the prospect that this might actually work. He looked back up at her, hesitating for a moment, before speaking in a rushed tone of voice:
"Okay, fine, let's do it anyway."
A wide grin spread on Lex's face, elation flashing through her eyes for a moment, before she remembered the circumstance. "Great, but you do have to promise to not fall in love with me. It happens so much that it's becoming an issue."
Scott snorted. "I promise."
Lex turned, grabbing his hand and tugging him along towards the school, a weightless feeling in her head that reminded her of the rush of flying. Still, there was a voice at the back of her mind; whispering words into her conscious like a love letter addressed to a girl who was once the moon and stars:
Dear Alexis Rivera,
God, you're such a manipulative bitch.
A/N:
crying because she owns me.
i like to make my characters realistic, so yes!! lex will be flawed!! and that is okay, because reading stories about oc's who are perfect can't be fun. she will have flaws and she will learn to fix her mistakes in a healthy way.
