EMERSON VALE WAS SIMPLE TO UNDERSTAND: the only daughter in a family with 2 boys. Her friend group consisted of one girl, Kim Connweller, whom Em had lived next to since the age seven. Her mother lived a town over, in Forks, and Em barely saw her after her second wedding. She had an older brother who worked at Lahote Auto since he had graduated, while their father drank his life away in their home.

Emerson always hated her mother. She blamed her for breaking up their family and forcing her to choose who she loved more during the divorce. She blamed her mother for her father's drinking problems and for the reason why her brother never got to escape this town they had grown up in. Em blamed her mother when her father hit her because she looked exactly like her, and that's why it was easy to blame Ella Vale for everything that went wrong in her life.

Em blamed Ella when her father kicked her out that night. She blamed Ella when she landed at a cheap motel for the night, knowing it would be all her father needed to cool down. Emerson blamed her mother when her fake id didn't work at the motel bar. And Em didn't want to blame her mother when she snuck into the bar across the street and found a brooding brunette sitting at the bar. And she definitely wasn't going to blame her mother for the events after that meeting.

Emerson Vale snuck out the morning after and went back to her home smelling of sex. Planning of never seeing the boy again. Until her mother comes calling and demands to call in the proper custody agreement—where Emerson is meant to stay with her mother during the school year. Unable to fight it, Em is forced to the town across the way, forced away from her one friend, and forced to live with her mother who she believed ruined her life. Along with her new arrangement, Emerson is forced to see the one boy she had never thought she would see again, and for some reason he won't escape her thoughts.

She knows he's a bad idea, but something bad ideas are the best ideas.
