A Living Mistake

Error's POV:

I crashed as soon as I hit the white ground. I felt drained. Of both magic and energy.

From the stress of today and being touched not too long ago, I could already tell that this reboot would last much longer than I would like it to.

"I see that you have lost yet another battle. We're disappointed." Spoke a voice as I began to reboot.

Fantastic. It hadn't even been five minutes since I've been back and I'm being taunted already. Or has it? It's not like I bring a clock here. Time has no meaning in the Anti-Void. It would just stop at what the time it was at before it got here. Besides, I wouldn't like the clutter of a useless abomination.

"It's not like you would have won anyways; even with your useless allies showing up from the blue." Another voice taunted.

The worst part is that I can't display an argue back. Or even move unless it's the twitching. I just have to take it. I just have to take it until the reboot is over.

"You do know that you left your buddy-buddy octopus with them, right? Who knows what would happen to him with an entire army against him?"

Shit. Did I miss tossing him into the portal when I was being hit? I felt myself glitch slightly more at the thought of leaving him alone in that place.

"But you gotta admit the thing with Dust and Nightmare was funny."

"Shut the hell up, Anon."

Anon? Who's that?

Nightmare's POV:

In the blink of an eye, he was gone. My guess? The only place inaccessible to most, including myself. But I wasn't 100% sure he went there.

A quick glance around and dodge later, I teleported out of there. Gone just as fast as Error had. Except it was back to home base. One of the very few places I was accepted in.

As I walked up the front steps, something on the doormat caught my attention. It was very easy, it stood out from the rest of the dark scene. A rose pink feather lied next to my feet.

I blinked. "How.. Strange.."

I picked it up with a tentacle to examine it further, trying to place where I've read about pink feathers. I placed it between the tips of my fingers and held it closely.

It seems to have slipped my mind at the moment, but I know it's within my knowledge. I'll have to look up the book later.

I entered to find mostly everyone here. Dust and Blue sat on the love seat next to each other. Blue appeared to be inspecting himself while Dust observed him curiously.

On the other side of the room, a tall Papyrus in orange stared intensely at the two on the love seat. He stood against one of the walls with his hands hidden in his pockets. An unlit cigarette sat between his teeth.

A tar teared skeleton, a cannibal, and an oreo were all flopped on the couch. Killer and Horror were sitting on the couch lazily beside each other while Cross was sprawled out over the both of them. None of them seemed to mind each other.

"Whatcha got there, boss?" Dust eyed the pink in the negative guardian's hand. "A rosebud?"

"I think you're blind as shit."

"Thanks for the compliment." The others chuckled at the crackhead of the group once more.

Killer looked at me and asked, "Where's Error? He tossed the rest of us through a portal except you."

I gave a hard look. "Injured and most likely rebooting. If he's not here, he's recovering in his Anti-Void. Somebody touched him." Even though I tried not to, worry laced my words. I felt my tentacles flick and curl behind me concerningly.

"You good, boss?" Dust suspected my mood. "You seem on edge or something."

Before more could be said, I left the room to my office. I set the feather on my desk and sat back in my chair. My mind raced for the significance of the colored feather. My fingers tapped the dark oak desk, thinking and staring at the feather as if waiting for it to tell me it's purpose.

"Pink feather... pink.."

I pushed away from the desk and stood. I walked to one of the walls lined with shelves of books and plucked a single hardcover book from it.

A single golden rose was carved onto the dark wooden cover of the old book. The words twisted around the thorny stem in red read A Path Not Taken; A New Life Found.

One of the books I've had since Dream and I...

I shook my head to clear that thought and dropped the book on my desk. The feather was blown into the air by the book's landing. It drifted gracefully onto the book's wooden cover.

Brushing the feather to the desk, I flipped through the pages until I found what I was looking for. I read the page to myself silently.

"That's what my guess was.. Now to see if it becomes reality." I shut the book and reached for the feather once more to pocket it. "But was it meant for me is the real question. And I'm curious for the answer."

Error's POV:

Eventually, the reboot was over and my poor vision was returned to me as well as control to my skeleton frame.

The voices were quiet before, but they had reappeared in their usual taunts and threats. I paid them no mind. I sat up. The first thing I felt was pain spiking up my spine from my last fight. I could feel it intensify as I stood upright. I pushed the thoughts of my injuries to the back of my mind and replaced them with the thoughts of the person I left behind.

How long that reboot was something I could not answer but another small jolt of pain in my chest suggested it wasn't long. About a day or possibly less.

The panic of the realization had me swiftly create a portal to the unfinished AU from before. But when I had dropped into the specific AU, it was void of anyone. All that remained was bits and pieces of magic and- what was that sound?

My sight was basically shit so I had to mostly rely on my 'ears' to listen. There it was again. I cautiously wondered towards the sound. It lead me to a messy pile of strings, ink blots, and.. Ink's scarf?

Before I had time to examine it further, it moved and it wailed suddenly. I jumped back and forced the strings from the pile to vanish. New strings flew in to grab what sat in the middle and lift it in the air. The small voice shrieked in surprise. A sharp gasp entered my throat.

It was a small child.

"͏̷Ẃ͡he̵r̡e̕ ̧͏t̷̕h̷è̛͟ ̴f͞úc̶̵k̡ di̕͟d̕ ̴y̡͞o͝u̷͜͡ ҉͟ć̢͟o̧̕m̛ȩ͏ ̕f̛͘r̕͢ǫ͞m̸̕? W̶h̸̶̕ò ̨͟t͜͝h̴̵e̸͏͝ fu̸͏ck̷̸ l̛͘ef͢t̕ ̶͡à k̶̶̨i̢̢͜d̸͘ ҉h̕͘er͘e̸̸̵?̧̢" I blurted out suddenly in confusion.

All the kid seemed to do was stare at me until it started to cry. A part of my SOUL urged me to comfort it and I took a step forward. It cried a bit louder when I did. Confused, I looked down at myself.

Blood, cuts, scars, bruises, and torn fabric is what I saw on myself. I forgot about that in the shock of the moment. A normal monster would have been spooked to see that. I most likely scared the crap out of this kid.

Tears ran down the kid's face. I did what I thought would calm them. I put on the hood with the connected bear ears and sat on the ground. I then lowered them from the air carefully and released the strings. A portal opened above them and a knitted figure of a little white dog fell onto their lap.

They seemed to calm a bit and stopped wailing, leftover tears rolled down their cheekbones. I took in their appearance.

Black bones that seem to float off in blobs in a few places; mainly on his skull. Their eyelights were familiar, one of them changed every so often to a new shape and color. Their fingertips were similar to mine, but different. The palm of their hands were black, their fingers were pink, and the tips of their fingers were yellow. And what seemed to be a tattered beige scarf was wrapped around them. Was this Ink's kid? When the hell did that happen? If I were to guess, they look about two or three..

Why did they have so many similarities to me?

I stared at the unfinished ground, trying to figure this all out. After a while of staring, I felt pressure on my arm. There it was.

The kid was leaning against my sleeve, dog toy in hand.
