Chapter 1

Worcester County High School

Princess Anne St

Pocomoke City, Maryland

Shequoia's POV

"Girl, you keep coming to my office!" said Mr. Johnson, the school principal, looking at the office referral, my English teacher wrote. "Why can't you be like the other students? All your carrying on is gonna get you kicked out of here."

"I'm my own girl!" I said. "Ya heard me? Nobody gonna talk down to me!"

"I'm the principal, and you are not gonna talk down to me!" barked Mr. Johnson. "You got a choice, young lady! You better straighten up and fly right, or your behind is out of this school for good! You ain't getting no second chance!"

"Yeah, whatever!" I scoffed. "Can I leave now?"

"Its time for you to go home anyway, now get on out of here," said Mr. Johnson. The bell rang, and it was now time to go home. I left the school, and got on the bus, that said Worcester County Public Schools, with a Maryland license plate on it. I sat down, and listened to Highest In The Room, by Travis Scott on my phone.

The bus arrived at my house, and I got off. I walked inside, and my parents weren't home. I took off my backpack, and decided what to do next. My stomach growled, so I felt like walking over to Hardees.

I walked over to Hardees, in the scorching heat. Beads of sweat rolled down my chocolate, brown skin. Unusually stifling for April. I walked into the fast food place, and was greeted by the aroma of chicken.

"What can I get ya?" asked the Hardees employee.

"Two bacon and cheese Angus burgers, and a vanilla shake," I said.

"Will that be all, Ma'am?"

"Yes, Ma'am."

$13.71, please."

I paid with a 20 dollar bill, and got some change back. I got my food, and left Hardees. A man got out of his white 1987 Buick Regal, with a Virginia license plate, and cast a look my way. "What you got? You want to share your food?"

"Uh, well..."

"I'm just playing, girl!" chuckled the Virginia dude. "Go on, get!"

I just shook my head, and walked back home with my food and shake. If I ever see him again, I'm punching him in his stomach. I said it before, and I'll say it again.

Nobody talks down to me.
