Chapter 4
Go follow @Huey_Duck (Wrote Huey, Donald, and Carter's parts.)
(I wrote Dewey and Louie's parts)
Carter walked up to Dewey the next day at the end of school.
"Hey, Dewey," she smiled. "Do you wanna go for a walk in the park?" she asked, scratching her beak gently.
Dewey turned around at the voice.
"Oh, hey Carter, um, actually, I need to go visit my brother, so I'll have to pass." Dewey stated.
"Oh, alright. Maybe some other time, bye." she smiled and turned around.
As she walked away, her smile was replaced with a scowl and she growled to herself, turning the corner so she was no longer in Dewey's sight.
Dewey sighed as he began making his way to the front of the school waiting for his uncle to pick him up.
A few minutes went by and then Donald finally pulled up to the school and stopped the car so Dewey could get in. "Ready to go see Huey, Dewey?"
"Yeah, but, um....." Dewey looked around. "Is Louie going to walk home or....?"
Louie came rushing to the front of the school, his hood on his head covering the left side of his face.
"I-I'm here." He panted. "Sorry I took so long."
"Louie!? What happened to your face?"
"Oh, um.....It's nothing." Louie covered his eye and looked down as he got in the car, Dewey followed straight after.
Donald stared at Louie for a minute before starting the car and driving to the hospital. "Uncle Scrooge should be there with your brother, boys. He spent the night with Huey so he wouldn't be alone." Donald told them, parking the car in the lot of the hospital that Huey had been admitted to.
Dewey fiddled with his hands as he got out of the car. He was extremely nervous and didn't know what to say to his brother once he saw them. Louie walked behind his uncle and brother slowly, he held his left arm tightly.
"What happened?" Dewey asked.
"It's nothing." Louie shook his head. Dewey took a deep breath trying not to worry.
"Are you sure, Louie?" Donald asked as he went to a nurse to get Huey's room number.
"Mmhm." Louie nodded.
"Alright... well, the nurse said that Huey's room was down the hall and is the last door to the left, so come on." Donald looked behind him as he started walking to Huey's room to make sure the other two triplets were still behind him.
Dewey followed his uncle his hands still fiddling with each other, Louie followed close behind.
"What do I say to him?" Dewey asked Louie who just shrugged.
"Ow." He muttered afterwards.
Donald looked at Louie as they got to the right door. He was now a bit concerned, but he knew that Louie wouldn't say anything.
He gently opened the door and allowed Dewey to go in first.
"Huey?" Dewey walked through the door slowly.
Huey's eyes were barely open. He was in one of the hospital gowns with an I.V injected into his arm and a breathing mask over his beak.
As he heard the door open, his head slowly turned so his half open eyes faced his brother. He said nothing.
Tears came to Dewey's eyes at the sight of his brother. He wiped them away quickly and rushed over towards his brother, hugging him.
"I'm sorry I didn't come home yesterday."
A small and quiet 'oof' was emitted from Huey as Dewey embraced him. He still didn't say anything. Half of it was because it hurt him to talk, and the other part was because he was hurt emotionally. Those two things combined caused the red triplet to fall silent. He weakly looked at his brother, his head resting onto Dewey's shoulder.
"I hope you're not mad at me." Dewey let go of Huey and sat down on a chair next to the hospital bed.
Louie walked in and looked at Huey.
"Hey." He greeted quietly.
Huey weakly waved at his youngest brother before slowly turning his head back to Dewey. He was upset with him, yes. He weakly extended his hand, wanting to feel comfort knowing that Dewey wasn't going anywhere. He looked at his brother with longing eyes.
Dewey grabbed his brother's hand and held it firmly, trying his best not to cry.
"Huey?" Louie called out. The youngest triplet didn't know what to do. He felt so vulnerable looking at his older brothers in the positions they were in. Dewey let his tears fall slowly as he held Huey's hand close to his chest. He put his own hand out and Louie reached for it quickly.
Huey let out a quiet breath as he gripped Dewey's shirt where his hand had been placed. He weakly looked at his two younger brothers and got tears in his own eyes. He loved these boys with his whole heart. It was his job to take care of them. He felt like he had failed them.
Slowly, Huey opened his beak, the hand that was placed on Dewey's chest gripped the blue fabric tighter. "I'm... I'm sorry..."
"No.....i-it's not your fault.....don't be sorry." Dewey cried out. "I'm sorry, I'm the one that's sorry." The middle triplet gripped both of his brothers' hands tightly. Louie flinched at the tightness on his hand, his entire left body ached.
"Can you not hold my hand so tight?" Louie whispered.
"S-sorry." Dewey's grip loosened a bit.
Tears were finally coming down Huey's cheeks. He whimpered, holding onto Dewey's shirt for dear life. His heart pounded again, and he yelled out in pain. His breathing was now heavy.
His brothers had never seen him like this. Vulnerable. In pain. Dewey and Louie had never seen their older brother in this state before.
Huey felt almost ashamed and disappointed in himself.
Dewey's eyes widened in shock, his heart ached as he heard his brother's screams. He got down from the chair bot knowing what to do.
"U-uncle Donald." He managed to stutter out, even though he was certain that he was already on his way. Dewey held Louie closely as the two watched their older brother struggle to breath.
Donald was already out the door, getting a doctor.
Huey coughed, though it sounded like he was choking. Quick gasps of air were heard by the two younger Duck brothers.
Donald rushed in behind a doctor, who quickly went to Huey's side and went to work, bringing in machines and needles that they stuck into the eldest triplet's body.
Huey became a bit weaker while all of this was happening to him, he looked at his family with fresh tears in his eyes.
Louie now shook in fear in the embrace of Dewey, who was doing no better than his younger brother. They watched as the doctors did many things to help their brother.
'I can't move.' Dewey thought. 'I have to stay confident. I can't be scared......I....' Dewey's thoughts stopped and instead decided to take him and Louie out into the hallway.
Huey's eyes watered even more as he watched his brothers leave the room. His breathing quickened and his body went into more pain. Sure, he still had Uncle Donald in here, but he needed his brothers in here by his side. They were his main source of comfort.
The doctor held him still as he inserted another medical device in him.
Huey's tears were now flowing down his cheeks. He needed his brothers. He couldn't go through this alone.
Dewey stood in the hallway holding his sobbing younger brother close to him, their backs against the wall.
"I don't know what to do." He muttered to himself. "What do I do?" He peeked back inside and saw Huey in much more pain than before, then he remembered his uncle's words.
'Stay by his side.'
Dewey gasped silently.
'That's it, we have to go back in there, we have to be brave for him.' He let go of Louie and looked him the eyes.
"Louie," He started. "Louie, look at me." The youngest triplet looked at his brother. "I need you to be brave, okay? We're going back in there and you need to be brave for me, for Huey, you got that?" Louie nodded and wiped his eyes of his tears, taking Dewey's hand, he followed him back into the room.
The doctor was talking to Donald in a whisper in the corner of the room when the two triplets walked back into the room.
Huey stood lying on the bed. His eyes were closed as his cheeks were stained with tears and the palm of his hands were open on the bed.
He was quietly whimpering as he just laid there. He needed a friend, or better, a brother or two.
Dewey, along with Louie, who was holding his hand, stared in terror at the sight of their brother. They slowly made their way to his bedside and gently put their free hands on their brother's open palm.
"Huey.....w-we're here for you."
Huey flinched a little as he felt their hands go onto his open palm. He kept his eyes closed. His body was now hooked up to many more machines. One in particular was right next to Dewey, and it was helping the eldest triplet to breathe.
Huey groaned softly, he wasn't sure if he even had the strength to open his eyes so he could look at his brothers.
"Don't struggle to do anything Hue, it's okay." Dewey stated realizing that his brother was trying to open his eyes. 'What else do I say?' He thought. Louie's shaky hands tightened around his brothers'.
"Huey? Y-you're okay......please be okay......" The youngest triplet stated.
"We can't loose you." The two of them said.
Huey's head tilted. He longed to see his brothers' faces. He managed to open his beak and utter a few words.
"Y-You'd be fine... without me..." his beak closed after that. It hurt too much to talk, it hurt to move... it hurt too much to do anything.
"Don't say that!" Dewey yelled. "Don't you dare say that! You know that's not true!" Dewey and Louie hated hearing those words from Huey. At this point, they couldn't hold back their tears, letting them fall freely.
"We can't do anything without you. I, can't do anything without you." Louie admitted. Dewey sobbed into Huey's shoulder, knowing that if he did not stay close to him, he would be forced to leave and go home.
Huey grunted quietly. His hand weakly moved until it found the sleeve of Louie's sweatshirt. He gripped it, not tightly however.
Huey needed his brother to stay here. He couldn't be alone in this room another night. A single tear ran down his cheek despite his eyes were still closed.
Louie rested his head on his brother's chest, while Dewey continued sobbing into Huey's shoulder.
"We won't leave you.......we'll stay here....we want to stay here." Dewey whispered quietly, hoping Huey heard him. They knew they're brother was weak, but they hoped that he would survive, they needed him, but right now, he needed them.
"We love you Huey, please stay here." The younger triplets whispered.
Huey's breathing was light, but he was still breathing. Even though he couldn't react or respond to his brothers, he did hear them.
His hand lifted up weakly and rested on top of Louie's head, his fingers slowly ran through his hair.
The red triplet let out a small cry of pain as one of needles that had been injected into him moved, causing him pain in his shoulder that Dewey was now crying on.
Dewey looked up at Huey at the sound of pain that his brother had released. He placed his forehead on the side of Huey's head and closed his eyes, Louie now fast asleep.
"Stay strong Huey, I believe in you."
Huey's head tilted into his brother's as his fingers weakly kept running through Louie's hair. He felt safe now that his brothers were here with him. Huey's hand that was closest to Dewey moved slowly and weakly before resting on Dewey's chest as a form of comfort for himself.
Huey not only felt safe, he felt peaceful.
