The next morning felt slow. Especially to Huey. He was up before his two brothers like he usually was. Though, this time his chest was in a bit of pain, which forced him to wake up. He had managed to hobble down the stairs and to the couch. It was a struggle, but he didn't want to burden Dewey. Huey felt that waking his brother up that early just to help him down the stairs just wasn't worth it.
Donald was cooking breakfast in the kitchen. He knew that he didn't have to cook breakfast for the boys anymore, but it had become a habit.
"Dewey, Louie! Come eat breakfast!" Donald shouted up the stairs.
Dewey stirred in his sleep as he heard his name being called from downstairs. He sat up slowly and rubbed his eyes as he heard his name called once again.
Dewey got out of bed and went to Louie's bed, shaking his sleeping brother gently.
"Louie, wake up." Louie stirred a bit before sitting up. "Come on, it's breakfast time."
Louie nodded and got out of bed. The two brothers looked over at Huey's bed and realized that he was not there. They looked at each other in worry before deciding to go downstairs.
Donald was sitting next to Huey, talking to him in a low voice as Dewey and Louie came down the stairs.
"Has it gotten worse?" he whispered to the red triplet.
"A little," Huey whispered back. "Uncle Donald, I'm scared..."
"Don't be," Donald reassured him, still whispering. "You know you won't be able to go to school for a while, right?"
Huey only nodded in response to his uncle's question.
"Okay, now just relax..." Donald rubbed Huey's head gently before getting up and walking past Dewey and Louie before heading back to the kitchen again.
Dewey saw Huey sitting on the couch with an expression on his face that worried. It looked as if he was in a lot of pain. Louie tapped Dewey on his shoulder making the middle triplet turn around.
"What's wrong with Huey?" Louie asked. Dewey shook his, not wanting to be the one to break the news to his younger brother, so he instead walked over to Huey and sat down on the couch next to him.
"Are you still not feeling well?" He asked.
Huey looked at his brother and shook his head, mumbling a small "No." He took a deep breath, resting his hand on his chest as the pain there got a little more unbearable.
Dewey gripped the couch gently hating the idea that he could loose his brother to a condition he had no idea he had till recently. Louie walked over and sat on the other side of Huey with a confused look on his face. "So, um, what's up? It's a bit too early to look so depressed and tired." He stated.

"So, um, what's up? It's a bit too early to look so depressed and tired." He stated.
Huey looked at his youngest brother, giving him a soft smile. "Hey, Lou... um, I'm just not feeling well, so Uncle Donald told me to stay home today..." 'And everyday after that.' Huey thought sadly.
He cleared his throat as he continued to talk to his youngest brother. "At least you'll have someone to be lazy with you now." Huey joked, managing a small chuckle, hiding the pain in chest that had increased a tiny bit more.
Dewey tried his best to hide the frown that was sneaking it's way onto his features, but failed. He sighed lightly before getting up.
"Come on Louie, let's finish getting ready so we can stet our day."
"Um, okay?" Louie followed Dewey into the kitchen where Donald was.
"Dewey?" Huey whispered to himself. He was shocked that Dewey had left so quickly without saying anything to him. Why was he so worried? Sure, his heart was fragile and he was getting sick, but Dewey didn't know that, right? Huey looked down, now even more depressed and upset then he originally was.
Donald smiled as he placed Dewey and Louie's plate of food on the table. "Good morning, boys. How are you two doing?"
"Morning Uncle Donald." Louie responded, Dewey just stayed silent as he looked down at his plate. He pushed it away gently and turned away.
He didn't want to eat, he was too worried about his brother.
"Dewey?" Donald asked. "Are you..." he trailed off when he realized why he was acting like this. "...oh." Donald sighed as he turned back to the stove.
"Why is everyone so upset today?" Louie asked.
"It's......it's nothing Lou, just eat your breakfast, I'm not hungry." Dewey stood up and began walking back to his room.
Huey looked at his brother as headed for the stairs. He wanted to run and hug him. But if he did, he wouldn't make it, and that would cause Dewey's mood to plummet further down.
Huey wiped a few tears away from his eyes. He felt helpless like this. He wanted to tell Dewey that everything would be okay, but he couldn't... because he didn't even know if he was going to be okay.
As Dewey entered his room, tears began falling down his face.
"I can't loose my brother.....I-I...." Dewey fell to the ground and began sobbing into his hands. He tried to regain himself, but he just couldn't.
"Why.....why did this have to happen to him?" He choked out. "T-to our family."
After cleaning up the kitchen, Donald knocked on the closed door of the room the boys shared. "Dewey? Come on, it's time to get to school. Louie's already in the car."
Dewey wiped his eyes and looked at the door behind him.
"Coming." Dewey mummbled out. The middle triplet stood up and opened the door, his eyes were slightly red from his tears. "Okay, I'm ready." He stated, his vision fixated on the ground.
'Come on Dewey, at least try to fake a smile so Huey won't get worried.' Dewey took a deep breath and looked up, a painfully fake smile on his face.
Donald bent down to his height after noticing his eyes. "Dewey, you're not fooling me. Why were you crying?" Donald asked, concerned.
Dewey's facial features dropped back to a frown.
"I'm scared....." He muttered. "I don't want to loose him.....but I can't look sad, or he'll get worried......and things will get worse."
"Dewey..." Donald said, resting his hand on his shoulder. "...the best thing you can do for Huey right now is to be there for him. Never forget that he needs you, especially now. I know it's hard to see him go through this, but don't hide away from him or ignore him, okay? Now, come on... Huey wants to see you before we leave." Donald stood up and gave his nephew a small smile before heading back downstairs
Dewey smiled back softly and began heading down the stairs as well.
'Uncle Donald's right, I can't shut him out, I have to be there for him, like how he was always there for me.'
Donald held Huey under his arms as the red triplet stood by the door to the manor.
Huey smiled softly as Dewey came down the stairs. He wanted to do and say one thing to his brother before he left for school.
Dewey made it to the bottom of the stairs and walked to the door. He looked at his brother before hugging him gently.
Huey chuckled a little despite the pain, he gently whispered so only Dewey could hear. "Funny, I was about to hug you."
Dewey smiled sorrowfully before whispering something back. "Take it easy today, okay? I'll see ya later."
Huey nodded and nuzzled Dewey's cheek softly. "I'm gonna miss you, Dew, and I promise I will."
"I'll miss you too, I gotta go." Dewey released Huey from the hug and made his way to the car where Louie was waiting for him.
"What took you so long?" He asked.
"It's nothing, just had to take care of something." Dewey answered.
Donald helped Huey back to the couch.
"Your Uncle Scrooge will be here to take care of you."
Huey nodded.
Donald smiled, then walked outside and got in his station wagon. "Are you boys ready to go?"
Dewey nodded and looked back at the house one last time. Louie looked at his brother in confusion.
'Seriously, what's up with everyone?' He thought to himself.
Donald sighed as he started the car and drove to the school. "Well, have a good day, boys, and try to cheer up, Dewey." Donald told them as he came to the part of school where they exited the car.
The boys stepped out of the car and entered the school.
"Cheer you up?" Louie asked Dewey. "What's the matter?"
"It's nothing you need to worry about right now Louie, let's just go." Louie looked at his brother as he walked towards their classroom, quickly catching up. Students whispered to each other as two of the three triplets walked by them. The usually cheerful Dewey was not so cheerful and the careless Louie looked more confused and worried. "Hey, Dewey," a student called out.
"Where's Huey?" The triplets looked at the students in the hallway who anticipated their answer. The three of them were pretty popular in school, only because their great uncle was the trillionare Scrooge McDuck.
"Oh, um.....he wasn't feeling too good today.....so he stayed home." Dewey explained.
"Well, I hope he feels better soon," another student said.
"Coming through!" a voice said.
"Oh no," a student said. "Isn't that your cousin Gabby?" another student whispered.
She nodded. "Hey, Gabs." the figure said after running past Dewey and Louie. "Don't call me that, Carter," she replied.
Carter was about to respond, but Gabby cut her off. "Just be careful, I'll see you later," she said before walking off with her friends. Carter just sighed and shrugged.
"Never seen her before." Dewey whispered to Louie. "Have you?" Louie shook his head.
"I've never seen her either." He answered.
Carter looked at the two triplets. She had heard about their uncle. "Hey, aren't you related to Scrooge McDuck?" she asked.
"Um yeah......why?" Louie asked slightly confused.
She pulled out a newspaper and handed it to them. They were on the cover with Scrooge. Louie was hanging onto Scrooge while Huey and Dewey were making bunny ears behind each other's heads.
Dewey looked at the newspaper and his spirits immediately plumeted at the sight of him and Huey on the newspaper.
"Yep....that's us and our great uncle." Dewey responded.
Carter looked at the blue triplet, confused. "Hey, are you okay?"
"Um, yeah......I'm just a bit...um never mind, I'm fine." Dewey smiled a bit trying to convince Carter that he was fine.
She crossed her arms over her chest and looked at Dewey. "If you say so..." she looked up at the ceiling as the bell rang for their first class. "Well, we better to class." she was about to turn and leave, but then she held out her hand for Dewey to shake, giving him a soft, friendly smile. "I'm Carter, by the way."
Dewey shook her hand.
"I'm Dewey and that's my brother Louie." Louie was now on his phone as if on cue by the bell. He waved slightly while still looking down.
She giggled a little. "It's nice to meet you guys." She looked at Dewey. "I've seen you in one of my classes. English, I think it was."
"Oh yeah, duh," Dewey laughed. "I knew it was impossible for me not to recognize everyone in the school."
After that was said, the bell rang. "Darn it, I'm late." Dewey waved 'bye' to Carter as he rushed over to his first class with Louie at his side. The triplets were lucky enough to have the same classes.
Carter waved back and smiled as she headed in the other direction to her class which was on the other side of the hallway.
Dewey walked into the class with Louie, the teacher looking over towards the door.
"Why are you two late?' She asked.
"Um we...."
"I got this." Louie whispered. "You see-" "
Don't even try it Mr. Duck. Sit down, and where is your brother?" Dewey sat down in his seat and flinched at the mention of his brother.
"He's at home." Louie answered.
"So he ditched? Hm. I wouldn't have expected him to do that." Dewey's grip tightened around his wrist. "I guess I have no choice but to put that in his file then." Dewey stood up quickly, his chair scraping across the floor.
"He's sick.......he's not ditching. " he explained.
"I don't believe the school got a call from your parents so I still have to write that in." Dewey sat down in his seat, Louie put a hand on his shoulder and smiled softly.
"It's okay, we'll fix this."
Later that day, Carter sat down alone at a lunch table and pulled out her lunchbox. She was never really one to have many friends. In fact, she liked sitting alone. It gave her time to think. She glanced at the door as she saw Dewey enter the room before looking back at her food and taking a bite of her sandwich.
Dewey looked around the cafeteria and hugged his lunch box close to his chest. Louie would always sit with his other friends and Huey and Dewey would sit together, but since Huey wasn't there, Dewey had to eat lunch by himself, until he saw Carter sitting by herself. He walked up to the table she was sitting at.
"Hey, do you mind if I sit here?" He asked.
She looked at him and gulped before smiling. "Not at all, have a seat, Dewey." she took a sip of her water and scooted over so he could sit down.
"Thanks." Dewey sat down next Carter and began opening his lunch. A small note was inside, it read.
'Stay positive' -Love Uncle Donald. Dewey sighed and put the note in his pocket.
"Is something bothering you, Dewey?" she asked, noticing the note as he put it in his pocket. Usually when you're in class you're happier."
"Oh, it's nothing really......I'm just, a bit worried is all." Dewey explained sorrowfully.
"Why?" she asked. Carter hoped she wasn't pushing him too deeply in whatever was troubling him.
Dewey pushed his lunch away and sighed.
"It's my brother....." Dewey explained.
"The one who's at home sick?" she asked him, putting her sandwich down so he had her full attention.
Dewey nodded softly. "Yeah....."
"I'm sure he'll be fine, Dewey." she rested her hand on his shoulder as an idea came into her head. "Hey, how about I take you out for some ice cream after school today?" she offered. "To help you get your mind off of it."
The middle triplet smiled and nodded. "Thanks, that sounds nice." He answered. 'I hope this helps.'
Carter giggled as she took a sip of her water. "Great, meet me at the front doors of the school after your last class. We'll walk there together."
"Okay." Dewey looked at his lunch and closed it, having eaten nothing. 'I'm not hungry right now.'
Carter just rubbed his back in comfort, quietly thinking to herself. Phase one of her plan was complete.
