17: Validated
As much as I want to go see her right now, I need to go stop this unnecessary battle. Zuko thought as he neared the Earth Kingdom site of conflict, placing his battle helmet on. I hope the baby is okay.
The fight came into his sight and an unusual feeling came over him. It was fear. But not for him; it was fear for his unborn baby.
"We fought to end the hundred-year war. To get peace, finally." He spoke to himself. "I won't let my baby come into the world during yet another war. Especially when I am the leader of one of the four nations."
He burst onto the battlefield in an attack position.
"General How! Withdraw your troops immediately!" He demanded
But the General wasn't in a generous mood.
"With all due respect, Fire Lord Zuko, you stand on Earth Kingdom soil! Here, your words have no authority!" He shouted, striking an attack pose as well.
Then, both men struck.
But the Avatar, crew and the Earth King himself were on their way.
Zuko looked up as he heard a crack! Aang exploded out of a pile of rocks in full Avatar mode and zoomed towards him. He knew he had screwed up in Aang's eyes and began to explain himself.
"Aang, I know how this looks! I swear to you, in my heart...!" Zuko placed his hand over his heart and removed his helmet in an act of goodwill. "None of that matters, does it? I'm doing exactly what my father would have done..."
Suddenly, the ground cracked beneath the General and the Fire Lord. And Zuko fell.
"Fire Lord!!!" General How shouted.
As he fell, he accepted his fate. If he was going to act like his father, then he wanted to let the Avatar do what he had to do. He wanted him to do what he had asked him to do.
But Aang did not allow it. While in the Avatar state, he zoomed down within the Earth's crust and grabbed Zuko.
"Aang, I don't..." He protested as he was set on the ground with a wild look in his eye; and it got wilder as he saw Katara and the Earth King come closer.
"Earth King Kuei! Look at who you're fighting!" Aang pointed at the Yu Dao assassin, the Earth Kingdom resistance fighter, Katara and himself. "Fire Nation, yes-- but also Earth Kingdom, Water Tribe and now, Air Nomad. This is who stands against your army."
"And against the Fire Nation Army, too!" The resistance fighter chimed in.
"It took me a while, but I finally understand. You're not just fighting a colony. You're fighting a whole new kind of world." Aang spoke, but then lowered his voice. "You should speak privately with the Fire Lord about how that looks for him."
"Don't listen to that Ash-Maker propaganda, Earth King Kuei! Harmony Now!" Smellerbee, a resistance fighter also, chimed in.
"Quiet! QUIET!!" King Kuei held up a hand. "I need to see what I... What I... I just need to see..."
"Zuko...?" Aang looked over at the shaken Fire Lord.
"So... I was right, then...? All along, my decision... was right?..." And then he passed out.
"Zuko!"
