9. man with a mission
The sound of crickets and other critters of the night sounds peacefully around San as he laid in a soft patch of grass surrounded by tall trees, staring up at the moon in complete silence.
He reaches into the pocket of his worn down tunic and clutches the stone again, the harsh coolness reminding him that it's real. That he really did meet that lady at the collection office yesterday and she really did help him. Hwasa.. if this actually works..
He swallows hard. He wanted it to work. So badly. He didn't know what he'd do if this was another wild goose chase.
A long sigh escapes his lips and he pulls the object out of his pocket and inspects it for the nth time. The red stone was a little smaller than the size of his palm and had a big swirl engraved in the center. The rock itself had specks of different shades of red which caught the moonlight differently as he spun it in his hands, making it glisten.
"What do you think?" San asks out loud then looks up at the moon. "Pretty, right?" Silence.
Almost everynight since that night he'd find somewhere with the moon clearly being visible and talk to Wooyoung. He knew he had to be watching him. He also knew he probably sounded insane but the irony is this was probably one of the few things keeping him sane.
"I think it's really pretty. But I can't help but feel nervous. If this guy is the real deal we could see each other again. I-" He bites down on his lip. After 4 years...
He didn't want to get his hopes up. Better to expect disappointment so that when it comes it doesn't hurt as much. "I'm gonna get moving. Better to travel at night and it's less people I'd have to run into" He stands up with a grunt. As a vampire he obviously doesn't sleep anymore which made his already long days extra long.
He grabs his bag and small satchel, swinging it across his back and chest and continued moving. Where he currently was in Naex was two days away from Boulia. If he wanted to get there quicker he'd have to keep moving.
He wasn't hungry yet but was glad he bought that blood bag for the long trip he knew he'd have even if it was ridiculously expensive. The hours go by quicker than usual but that could just be because all he had on his mind was completing the plan.
It was night fall again when hunger began creeping in and he knew he'd have to feed soon but wanted to save the blood in his bag for when he's actually in Boulia. So he sets down his things beside a tree making sure to hide it from the main forest path, then he made his way deeper in the darkness in search of something that was alive he would feed on.
After a minute or two he catches the sound of something scurrying in the bushes on the far left and he vampire speeds to the sound successfully grabbing a hare by the head and snapping it's neck in one fell swoop, killing it.
He drained it dry within seconds and grimaced at the slightly bitter taste after pulling back. But he tosses the carcass to the side and returns back to the main path way, picking up his bag and grabbing his waterskin. He uses some water to wash the blood from his lips then continued on the travel. He wasn't fully satiated but it was better than nothing.
Eventually he approaches Boulia's borders sometime in the late afternoon only managing to cross paths with some other travellers who wanted some water and a pixie that tried selling him a flower. A new record he would say.
He takes out the map Hwasa gave him and eyed Rowdows Covert on the map then began making a route in his head. Confident this would work, he folded it up again and made his way towards a main pathway which most travellers often moved through. That's what I am. An unsuspecting traveller... I think.
There were quite a few people waiting for entrance at the gate as werewolf and vampire guards slowly let people out of Naex and into Boulia or out of Boulia and into Naex. There were massive gates with menacing guards inspecting every single person that went through. It was quite intimidating.
Though the line up was filled with non wolves or vampires since neither could cross the borders into each other's territory but he still felt pretty confident he'd be let through. That is until he saw how the guards were testing and weren't just going off appearance. To test for werewolves they would place a silver coin on their palm to see if it burned through their flesh. For vampires they would prick the person's finger to saw if they healed quick.
And as soon as he saw this he froze. Shit.
He slowly backs away, pulling his hood over his head and heading back up the path where he came. Things were going too smoothly he knew something would come up eventually.
He decided to go around and through Egrud, faery territory. It'll be longer but it's not like he had a choice. "Aish- this is so annoying" He mutters outloud as he began moving north of the border.
After what felt like an eternity he made it inside Boulia, the first thing he noticed was how everywhere smelled of... dog. And he was still in some tall forest quite a few kilometers from actual werewolf civilization. He scrunches his nose but kept moving.
Sounds of water splashing in a uniform manner, almost like a waterfall catches his attention and he takes a detour towards the sound. He definitely felt like he needed some time to clean up and fill up his water skin.
Just as suspected, it was a water fall. San grins and pushes past the trees and towards the lake since he was at the bottom of the water fall. He places his bags down and scoops up hands full of water and drinks then splashes his face then his hair.
He continues his cleaning when the snap of a twig from the looming trees behind him causes him to flinch and then freeze. That wasn't some forest critter.. He knew what those sounded like.
There wasn't another sound but he knew someone was there. So he stands up in complete alarm but willing himself to calm down. "Who's there?"
He'd love to just vampire speed in there and maybe snap their neck depending on their reason for stalking him but he couldn't give himself away. He's no longer in Naex which means he's no longer a vampire.
So he drags out the small knife he always kept in his boots and unsheathed it. He slowly made his way towards the sound, heard another snap as though the person was trying to sneak away, and he immediately picks up in a sprint just as the person did as well. San ran after the guilty party who he now found out is a girl.
He ducks under branches and easily hops over logs and eventually he tackles her to the dirty forest floor. They grunt as they land and she curses out loud. "Fuck. Get off me!" She growls out, trying to push him off her.
San noted she's young. 17 years old in human years at most. "Why were you following me?" He presses, pushing the knife under her jaw while holding her down. Her light brown hair spread out and fell in her face messily and she winces from the adult male weight on her back.
She growls back. Like actually growls. Her dark eyes glows amber momentarily. "I wasn't following you dumbass"
"Then what the hell were you doing?" San presses, his voice strong and unwavering.
"Can you fucking get off me? If I have to shift and ruin these clothes because of you.." She snaps back.
Before San could respond he spots a large dark brown something come sprinting at him from his peripheral vision. His reaction speed must've been rusty because next thing he knew he was flying across the small forest space and into a tree with a painful thud. He groans and rolls on his side.
"You didn't have to do that. I had control over the situation" The girl mutters at the wolf that had rammed San off her. She dusts off her clothes and pulls herself up while the wolf takes a defensive position in front of her, growling menacingly at San.
"Oh wow my hero" She says again sarcastically. "I definitely had it under control don't be an ass" San noted she must be speaking telepathically with the wolf since he knew that was something they could do.
Another wolf pops out through some bushes, this one smaller and fur a bit more tan than the first wolf. "And you brought Hyunjin with you?" She groans.
San felt annoyed because the last thing he needed was to get in an altercation with a werewolf pack especially since he just got here. "I don't mean any harm, she was just following me and I wanted to know why. That's all" He sheaths the knife and puts his hands up in surrender while slowly pushing himself up to his feet.
The bigger wolf gradually eases but still looks at him with it's guard up. He turns his head towards the girl ever so slightly. Next thing she nods. "I'm fine. It was my fault I was just curious. I've never seen an elf before. Who knew they could be so aggressive" She says with a pout while rubbing her back where San had his knee lodged on just a few moments ago.
The wolf looks back at San, his soft grey eyes glistening ever so slightly and San stays quiet hoping they would all just leave and he'd go on with his day.
But as his luck would have it, the first wolf stalks closer to him slowly shifting back to human until a tall gorgeous dark haired boy was standing directly in front and within arms reach of him. Completely naked.
