Chapter 6: Frowning
~Lucy's POV~
I loved being with Natsu, he made me so happy. After I had embraced him, neither of us pulled away from the hug.
His fast heartbeat was like a drum, echoing in my ears. Natsu kept patting my head; flattening down my hair.
I was disappointed when Natsu detached himself from me. I wish we could've extended our hug.
"Let's just, uh, get back to work." Natsu said scratching the back of his neck. He seemed nervous, oddly nervous. His eyes showed happiness, which ultimately made me smile. I don't mean to be selfish, but, I made him smile. The thought caused me to blush.
We began making covers for our scrap books. I had brought a ton of markers, stickers, and glitter. I made a pink glittery cover with my name on it. There was also a spot to place a picture, but I didn't have anything to fill it.
Natsu drew a huge dragon on his cover. Who knew he was such an excellent artist? I'm learning more about him every day.
We may have looked like we were working, but we mostly just goofed around. He would throw a marker at me, which I would respond by drawing on his face.
He continued to laugh. Laughing didn't seem like something Natsu would do often. His smooth laughter filled my head and warmed my heart.
Before we even knew it, the clock struck eight.
"Is it that late already?" Natsu asked pulling out his cellphone.
"I guess so," I said inbetween a giggle. I pulled out my phone, and saw that I had three missed calls from my dad. "Oh shoot, I have to go," I said anxiously.
"What's wrong?" Natsu asked, noticing my mood change. I shooed away the topic and went to go put on my shoes. I slipped them on my feet and slung my backpack over my shoulders.
"Oh it's nothing, just my dad worrying where I was." I knew I was probably going to be grounded for my irresponsibility.
Natsu had stood up and walked towards me. He handed me my scrap book, and I accepted it with gratitude.
"Ready to go?" He asked, showing a little disappointment that I was leaving. He may not admit it, but when I said I had to leave, his face was solemn. I nodded and opened his front door.
We rode down the lavish elevator, and saw Guildarts sleeping at his post. We just kind of looked at each other and laughed.
"He always falls asleep after eight," Natsu whispered in my ear. His hot breathe sent a chill down my spine. What, was this some kind of clue? Was Natsu trying to tell me that I could come here after eight, unnoticed?!
All I could do was nod my head in response. I couldn't think of anything to saw. If I opened my mouth, I know I would just garble random words. I stood frozen in my place, did Natsu want me to come back? I shook my head in disbelief and caught up to Natsu.
We jumped on his bike and rode off into the darkness. I didn't hesitate clinging onto Natsu this time. The only thing lighting our path was the small light that emitted from the motorcycle. I could hear the locusts chirping at us as we passed. The city lights were blaring bright as we entered the city. The city was beautiful at night.
We soon arrived at my dark house. I couldn't see any lights shining through the windows. I instantly felt a pit in my stomach. My dad was home right?
I jumped off the bike and handed Natsu his helmet. "Thanks for the ride, I guess that means I owe you three." I blushed and looked at the ground. Natsu smirked as he fastened his helmet on his head. His pink hair stood out against the dark sky.
"Bye Luce," Natsu shortly replied. He rode off, his presence disappearing from my vision. I walked up our cobblestone steps cheerfully. I grabbed my wrist thinking of how well the night went. It wasn't as awkward as I thought it was going to be. Even though we've only known each other for a few days, I feel like I really know who Natsu is.
He puts up a barrier against people. He acts mean and stubborn to isolate himself. Under his hard shell, he's actually a teddy bear. He's just a guy who has been through some hardship, and doesn't want to let other's in. I think that I have broken down that barrier. He slowly felt more comfortable with me, and vice versa.
I unlocked the door and entered slowly. I tried to quietly shut the door, but the creaking echoed throughout the entire house. As soon as I shut the door, I turned around to see my father staring at me. I gasped at his immediate presence. I stepped back out of fear.
"Oh my gosh dad. You scared the shit out of me," I said as I placed my hand on my rapidly beating heart. My dad showed a stern expression.
"Where the hell were you? Do you know what time it is?" I looked down at the floor, my body filling with guilt. My dad's eyes were cold, showing no expression.
"I was working on a school project, I'm sorry. I should've let you know," I said timidly. My dad took a step closer to me and held out his hand. I sighed and grabbed my phone from my back pocket. I placed it in his hand and he roughly swung it away from me.
"That is unacceptable," he said as the smell of alcohol escaped his mouth. I crinkled my nose as the bitter smell filled my nostrils. Disappointment coursed through me.
You think you know someone, but everybody is hiding something. What shocked me next is how my dad reacted to my foul expression. He threw my phone down towards the floor with one motion. The screen shattering filled the silence in our house.
"Did you start drinking again?" I asked balling up my fists. If I wasn't mad enough at his drinking problem, this really took the cake. "You promised you wouldn't do that."
"Oh whatever," he said as he slurred his words. His causality of the subject caused my anger to rise. He broke a promise, and I couldn't take liars.
"Oh whatever?"I questioned sternly. "This problem of yours is getting out of control, you need help!" I yelled. I paused and took a deep breathe. He wasn't reacting very well to my advice. He had begun to shake out of anger. We were both mad, which wasn't a good combination.
"I don't have a problem, shut up Lucy." He said pointing a finger a me. His finger fell right in front of my nose, causing me to grunt.
"Ever since mom died, you haven't be able to move on. She's gone, get it through your head." I screamed furiously. The veins on my dad's head instantly popped out. He snarled and raised his fist. His drunken spit was flying everywhere. In one swift motion, I found myself on the floor.
He punched me.
