Chapter 44
The week sped past in a blur. In just under two months I would be flying back to Australia to see my old friends. But first, Demi's Halloween party. Drew and I looked hot as fuck in our costumes. It was cold so he brought a camouflage jacket for each of us. Within an hour were ready precisely on time. This was because we had to pick up Kyle and Scarlett and meet the rest at the party.
We arrived outside of Scarlett's house and they were waiting on the porch. Let's just say they made a hot zombie couple. I will also grudgingly admit that Scarlett's zombie makeup was on point.
After an awkward and silent car ride, we rolled up to Demi's pad at 21:00 to find the party in full swing. It looked like everyone had gone all out with their costumes. Naturally, there were prostitutes, I mean bunnies, and male strippers, I mean firefighters. However, a lot of people had been really creative. The hostess herself was a Starbucks and looked cute as fuck. And no, not a slutty Starbucks, as if such a thing does or should exist.
Our squad spent five minutes just congratulating each other on our fantabulous costumes. Then we headed inside and straight for the red solo cup table. Most of us grabbed a cup but I held back. I wanted to play a round of beer pong with someone later. And so the night began...
☆☆☆
By midnight, Matt and Erin had passed out on a couch. Right next to a furiously making out Kyle and Scarlett. Kat was upstairs, throwing up while my loving stepbrother held back her hair. Nate and Drew were having a dance-off outside and Leah was dancing on a table somewhere. That left me playing beer pong one-on-one with Amy Winchester. She was a strong drinker, but I was stronger. And a better shot. After winning, I decided to go outside and dance with Drew as his and Nate's dance-off had ended in a tie. I was quite tipsy and Drew was just a little bit more drunk.
"Hey!" I shouted over the music.
"What?" Drew asked, still dancing.
"I wanna go to that lake again!"
"Now?"
"Now!"
He seemed to consider for a moment.
"Okay!"
Our squad had organised Ubers home so we could leave as we were. I know it was dangerous to drive in my condition but in Sydney I had down worse in even more drunken states. We reached the lake to find it alone. Perfect.
I raced to the pier's edge and chucked in a few stones. Laughing, Drew scooped up a handful of pebbles and sat beside me on the pier's edge. We spent a few minutes with him just patiently teaching me how to skip stones on the water. I already knew but it was cute to seem him so eager to teach me. Although, we couldn't exactly see straight enough to really skip them. After a few failed attempts, Drew and I lay on our backs and stared at the stars.
"Jay, what happened to your brother?" he asked suddenly, catching me off guard.
"Who told you about that?" I demanded.
"Well," he replied sheepishly. "Back when we were still enemies, I overheard you on the phone with someone and you mentioned a brother. What happened to him?"
I sighed. I guess now was as good a time as any to tell him. "My dad and mom got married all those years ago and after a while, my dad decided he wanted kids. My mom didn't want to have kids though. So they reached a compromise and adopted my older brother, Sebastian, when he was just a baby. Five years later, they adopted another baby, me. Then when Seb was thirteen, my dad took us for a DNA blood test. You see, we looked scarily alike so my dad guessed we were related and he was right. We had the same parents. We also found out that Seb had leukemia."
I broke off here as memories flooded back. Drew pulled me tighter and I snuggled into him.
"My parents divorced, Seb died five years later and my mom disowned me. And so my dad and I moved here," I finished.
"That's amazing. Why would anyone disown someone like you?" Drew said.
"I don't think she ever wanted me or Seb," I replied.
"Well I want you. And I'm going to keep you. I promise," he said.
I promise.
Those were big words with a big meaning. I'd heard them so many times before and almost never had anyone kept those promises. What made this time different?
Drew and I hung by the pier for a half hour longer before driving to my place. We sat on the couch until we both fell asleep, still in our guerrilla costumes.
