Chapter 43

Kyle above ^-^

***

It was official. Scarlett was ignoring me. Four days had passed and it was now Friday. I was feeling pretty down as my boyfriend was out of town this weekend and all our group's couples were going out, including Kake but not Kylett.

I was not feeling my best and I was the most homesick I had ever been in my entire life. So I did the most basic white girl thing I knew how to do: shop. I went to Boohoo and got a distressed t-shirt dress. Then a dress at Forever21 for the wedding reception. I had withdrawn as a bridesmaid and while Luke was mad because of it, he also understood that I was in a fight with Scarlett and really homesick. My less understanding father and Christine, however, agreed that I could drop out as a bridesmaid if I didn't wear a black dress to the wedding. But being the rebel that I just can't seem to stop myself drop being, I bought a black and white dress.

I already had the necessary accessories. I would wear plain black open-toed heels and black studs with a ring and a small necklace with a locket. And I would wear my hair like this but curled at the bottom.

And just purely out of habit, I went to Hot Topic. I was eyeing up this dress with a pentagram that I was sure Christine would love me to wear to the wedding, when I spotted Kyle. We hadn't spoken much so I didn't have a precise idea of where I stood with him. I considered walking over to chat but something stopped me. It was too late though, Kyle had spotted me and was coming over. Oh shit.

"Hey, Jay. What's up?" Kyle said and smiled warmly. I took that as a sign that we were good.

"Um not much. Everyone's out tonight and it's just me at home alone," I replied.

"Same here. Scarlett's visiting her grandparents this weekend. But you probably knew that?"

"Actually no."

"That bad between you two?"

"Uh huh."

"Scarlett is my girlfriend and you're one of my best friends. I can't have you two fighting. Plus I know for a fact that she misses you."

"Doesn't change much. I've tried to apologise to her but she's been avoiding me like crazy."

"Well I know you. You'll find a way."

"Thanks for the vote of confidence. I need it."

"Anyways, since we're both obviously bored as fuck and have no plans, how about we do something? Besides we haven't hung out in forever."

I bit my lip. Kyle had a point but I was apprehensive. I contemplated further and then nodded. Kyle smiled and I paid for the My Chemical Romance jacket I had tried on. Then we left Hot Topic and, spur of the moment, caught a movie. There was a new thriller out and I had hinted to Luke that I wanted to watch it. Sadly, he had no stomach for horrors or thrillers. Oh well.

After the movie, I cancelled my ride home and we took Kyle's car. Even though it was cold, we grabbed an ice cream and drove to the lake. We sat on the pier and chatted until the sunset. Then Kyle dropped me at home and left. I was on my own again and it felt so much worse after the awesome afternoon I'd had. I ordered a pizza and ate it while watching reruns of The Voice before showering and going to bed. I stared up at the ceiling in the dark and a fresh wave of homesickness came over me. Memories flooded my mind and I started to cry. Due to pure emotional exhaustion, I fell asleep.

The following morning, I got a call from Scarlett. Still fuzzy from sleep, I woke up and with a cracking voice, answered the phone.

"Jay, I can't believe you would go that low!" Scarlett yelled, sounding angry. What the hell did I do now?

"What the fuck are you talking about?"

"Don't play innocent. Casey Lowe saw you two." Now she sounded on the verge of tears.

"Scarlett I really have no idea what you're talking about and I didn't answer the phone to be verbally abused. Saw me with who?"

"With Kyle. You two were alone together at the lake and hanging out and-" she cut off and started crying.

"Scarlett, your boyfriend and I are best friends. Yes we were alone but we both had no plans and wanted company."

"And you guys are telling me nothing happened?"

"Yes. Look, at this point, I don't care if you hate me. But leave Kyle out of this. All he did was be friendly to one of his best friends."

"Fine! But I still don't forgive you," she snapped and ended the call. Sighing, rolled over and went back to bed.

It was Monday morning and the school was buzzing. Posters for the Fall Formal had been stuck up for the following Friday night as well as posters for Demi Hartwell's Halloween party this Saturday. All the couples had planned coordinating costumes. Kyle and Scarlett were going as zombies. Nate and Leah were going as cops. Kat and Luke were going as a magician and assistant. Erin and Matt are gonna be vampires and Drew and I are going as guerrillas. And no, not the slutty kind.

Scarlett was still ignoring me but had thankfully forgiven Kyle. She was now madder at me than ever but I could deal. I had a boyfriend to fill that gap now.

Our squad planned a group session for after school. We had planned a super special outfit coordination for this dance and the guys had to try on the rented tuxedos after school. Then the girls would try to find matching dresses.

The final bell rang and the team got in their cars to arrive at the mall. We met outside the shop and the assistant showed us in and gave the guys the tuxedos to try on. They swapped out a little and eventually had the right one with the right size. Then it was us girls' turn. We browsed the store for matching dresses to rent and even though we only had to find the right size, we still took longer than the guys. Here's our final pick of tux's and dresses.

Kake: Green Lantern
Eritt: Captain America
Kylett: Ironman
Neah: Superman

And Drew and I had picked Batman. I was more amped than ever for a school dance. Our squad was gonna kill it. If Scarlett didn't kill me first.
