Chapter 40
I reached the pool and Drew was already in it. I breathed an internal sigh of relief. My dad hadn't scared him away yet. I thought about it, and would it really be so bad if I started dating Drew? I knew it would take the squad some time to accept it but I admit that I have feelings for him. I kinda knew I did all along but now I felt free to acknowledge these feelings. And it looked like my feelings were mutual.
I stripped off my clothes and dived cleanly into the pool. I swam a length to warm up as Drew watched me.
"Like what you see?" I teased.
"Very much," he said and wolf-whistled. This earned a look from my dad. I returned it with a look of my own that said "Mind your own business!".
After that, Drew and I swam for a few minutes. I started swimming lengths, purely out of habit. I trod water halfway between the deep and shallow end and realised that I could not see Drew. I was about to call his name when I felt something brush my leg. I looked down but too late. Drew had come up behind me and grabbed my waist. Shrieking as he lifted me up, Drew threw me up and then caught me and dunked me into the water.
With murder in my eyes and coughing and spluttering, I emerged. Oh I was going to get him for that. I launched myself as soon as he turned away so that I was basically piggybacking. Drew started thrashing around trying to get me off and after dunking me underwater a few more times, I released my grip. Laughing, we started splashing each other. I went underwater and Drew copied. We looked at each other and Drew came a little closer. Our lips touched and connected; it was like something magical out of a movie. We kissed like that, underwater, until our oxygen depleted. We came up for air and then continued to kiss. That was, until we heard a cough.
"Hey, Jay?" my dad interrupted. "We forgot to buy hamburger buns. Can you run down to the corner store please?"
"Okay."
I grabbed Drew's hand to pull him out of the pool. Instead, he pulled me in, the little fucker. I splashed him and then got back out. Drew followed and we dried off. Drew and I pulled on our Vans. I put on my shorts and tee and he just put on his snapback.
We walked down the street and turned left and ended up at the corner store. I went straight to the bakery corner of the store and Drew just disappeared. I bought ten hamburger buns and queued to pay. Drew stood behind me with something in his hands that I couldn't see. I raised an eyebrow but didn't ask questions and paid. Drew paid for whatever it was and we left.
"Hey, Jay?"
"Yeah?"
"Do you want to go on a quick adventure?"
I hesitated. I mean, my dad would kill me but then again, I didn't care. And Drew just looked so perfect in the light of the sun about to set. I nodded and he grabbed my hand. He pulled me through the a few streets I didn't recognise and towards the woods. Drew followed a trail and I followed him and we reached a lake. There was an empty parking lot by it.
"Alright, strip," Drew commanded.
"Excuse me?" I said. But Drew had already pulled off his shoes and snapback and was running along the pier. He cannonballed into the lake and I understood. I stripped to my bikini and dived in.
"How about we finish that kiss?" said Drew, smirking.
I laughed. "Yeah, sorry about that."
"So yes or no?" asked Drew, drawing up closer. Our faces were practically touching now.
"Oh most definitely a yes," I mumbled and he kissed me again.

"Where were you?" my dad asked, attempting to keep the anger out of his voice.
"We just took a detour and visited some friends. That's all," I lied with a sweet smile.
Drew and I had only been gone for 45 minutes. Ten minutes to and at the store. The remaining time was spent going to the lake and swimming and walking back. I recalled our kiss and blushed slightly. Afterwards we had just sat on the pier and watched the sunset.
"Whatever, the burgers are almost done," my dad grunted.
I breezed past him and outside. I got two beers and took a seat next to Drew. It was dark now and a bit colder. I gave Drew one of my bigger hoodies and fetched one for myself. We spent the rest of the evening chilling, talking and basically ignoring my dad and Christine. At 22:30, after we had some apple pie for desert, Drew left. I didn't really want him to but it was late. I showered and went to bed, dreaming about kissing and swimming and beautiful blue eyes.
