Chapter 38
Fast forward a week of vengeful stares to the next week Monday aka the talent show finals. Drew thought that the herpes club posters were the next move. Bitch was wrong. Drew and Kat were in the one corner and Scarlett and I were in the opposite. The other three acts were in between us, warming up. Every now and then Drew would shoot me a filthy look. It didn't matter though as I was pretty used to them. Luke was still giving me the silent treatment and my dad was just barely talking to me. Sighing, I finished doing Scarlett's makeup.
Principal Rivers strolled through the backstage area and wished us all a hurried luck before walking out onto the stage. From the bit I saw, the hall was packed.
Mr Rivers cleared his throat. "Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, welcome to the finals for the Kennedy High Talent Show."
This was met with raucous applause and a reporter for the local newspaper snapped a photo.
"You are in for an evening of incredible acts. But first, let's here it for the finalists!"
The audience cheered as we followed our cue and walked on stage. I forced a smile and scanned the crowd. My dad and Christine were sitting near the back and my confidence was boosted a little. At least they showed up. Luke, however, was nowhere to be seen and my heart dipped. I would have thought that he would at least have come to see Drew get humiliated and maybe see us win the talent show. Kyle, Matt and Erin were sitting in the third row from the front and gave us a thumbs up.
Mr Rivers sent us off the stage and blah blah blahed a little more. Then he introduced the first act, The Reason. They did an incredible cover of The River by Good Charlotte ft. M Sinister. The audience went insane, myself included. Then it was Nate and Leah's act. They had changed their act a little and now they were dancing a choreography by Angel Drury, world-renowned dance teacher, to Heathens by twenty øne piløts. Their routine was perdect The audience cheered even louder then before.
Then it was the A team's turn. The dance team was flawless. They moved as one and the whole routine flowed perfectly. I felt nervous for Nate and Leah's chances. But then a miracle happened. Henry Willis, a senior and leader of the team, tripped. It was such a simple thing yet it completely obliterated the flow of the dance and it's ending was sloppy. The audience cheered but not as loudly as for Nate and Leah. Aaaaaaaaaaawww yiiiissssssss!
Principal Rivers announced the next act, Scarlett and me. I drew in a deep breath and walked out with my guitar strapped on. I plugged in and sat on the stool while Scarlett sat on hers. I nervously sang the intro. My voice shook just slightly and I stole a glance at the crowd. Yes! There he was. Luke was sitting next to Kyle. My confidence soared. And I began to pluck the intro and Scarlett began singing. The song sounded so amazing that I had to check if that was really us singing. We finished the song on a faultless note and the audience went absolutely wild. Luke even clapped, although mildly grudgingly but it was a step in the right direction.
We walked off and Principal Rivers introduced the final act, Kat and Drew. I peeked out and saw that Kyle had taken his cue and slipped away. This was gonna be good. 😈
Kat helped Drew set up the keyboard and I couldn't help but note how good they both looked. Kat was wearing a plain white strappy top with a maroon blazer and black shorts that really showed off her legs with sandals. Drew was wearing blue acid wash jeans and a plain white tee with a black blazer and black Converse. His hair had grown quite fast so it looked the same as it had when I met him.
Drew played the opening chords and prepared to sing. At the chorus, Kat joined him and they harmonised flawlessly. I could not find a single flaw with their performance. The song ended to wild applause. And Kat and Drew bowed. Then, suddenly, Kat bolted to the side. From his position at the stage control desk, Kyle released the pink paint. Several people in the front row got mildly splattered but it's okay as the paint washes out. Everyone gasped and Kyle dropped the feathers onto Drew. I stood in the wings with Scarlett and Kat, canning ourselves and high-fiving.
Drew looked mad enough to stomp a hole through the stage floor. But we weren't done yet. Oh hell no. Kyle put up the clip of Drew when he was drunk on the screen and played it. Meanwhile, Mr Rivers and a few others were on stage trying to help Drew. Mr Rivers yelled for someone to stop the clip but I knew that Kyle was long gone. The flash drive also could not be traced to any one of my squad. We had deleted everything else off the flash except the original and the edit of the clip.
The clip was a minute long and was already 25 seconds in. Drew was fumbling around and singing Last Friday Night by Katy Perry loudly and off-key. The audience was clapping and laughing and I just stood there smirking. We Are The Champions by Queen faded into the clip for the last 20 seconds as Drew stumbled around and tried to dance in the video. The clip ended and Mr Rivers walked back onto the stage.
"I apologise for the inconvenience. Just some student trying to be funny. I assure you that they will be caught and appropriately punished. But please welcome the talent back onto the stage."
The audience cheered as we all walked back onto the stage. I caught Luke's eye and see that he is breathless and in stitches. Somehow, I just know that he has forgiven me.
"In third place, we have............Scarlett and Jay!"
Oh well. It wasn't a win but it was still good enough. We clapped and cheered with the audience until Principal Rivers silenced us.
"And in second place we have the incredibly talented........Leah and Nate!"
Everyone went nuts with clapping and cheering. Even Mr Rivers couldn't silence us. Eventually the applause died out.
"And in first place we have...drum roll please............."
I could barely breathe in suspense. I gripped Scarlett's hand tightly.
"THE REASON!"
The audience completely lost its mind. Even our squad cheered for them. Drew was nowhere to be seen and my sense of triumph only increased. He was clearly to humiliated to show his face. Score for Jay.
