Song Above: Lights Down Low MAX

"What are you thinking?" I said as I draped the bedsheets over my shoulders, wrapping them tightly around me and walking over to Brody. He was sitting on the window ledge with his eyes locked on the noise and buzz of the party outside.

The glow from the fairy lights illuminated his features and his sun-kissed skin. He wore only jeans and his bare torso was so temping to touch. I reminisced about how it felt against mine and smiled.

He looked at me, returning a smile when he caught my admiring glance.

"You like what you see?" He cocked a brow with a smirk playing on his lips.

I rolled my eyes and lean against the ledge, "You know I do,"

"Yes I do," His eyes glistened as he grabbed hold of my waist and pulled me towards him. I had my back against his front and rested my head in the crease of his neck. He placed his chin on the top of my head and we both watched the motion outside.

The party was still in full swing. People were dancing and laughing. It was weird being an outsider looking in knowing you were once amongst it. I could see faces of people I'd known my whole life, blissfully unaware of their surroundings and only caring about that moment. They didn't care that in a month or so their world would change. They were living in the now, which I should have been doing.

"You never told me what you were thinking," I asked, the curiosity taking over. I had this obsession with knowing his thoughts. They were a secret I needed to know. I'd spent so long in the dark.

"I was thinking about how I used to live for parties. I'd count down the days until the weekend so I could go out and get wasted, but there's so much more to life than getting drunk and hooking up, you know?" He said his thumb stroking my arm as he spoke, "I wanna see stuff. The real stuff that not everyone gets to see,"

"Like the world?" I breathed.

I too felt like there was so much more that I needed to see. I wanted to see the Northern Lights, the Eiffel Tower and Buckingham Palace. I wanted to wake up on a beach and watch the sunrise or drink coconuts by the shore. I wanted to explore tropical jungles and live off only my backpack and the stars.

"Yeah, like the world," He repeated, his eyes slowly soaking in the surroundings outside as he spoke, "The people who are outside right now, how many do you think will stay in this town and never leave?"

"Probably most of them. They'll go to college and sway for a bit. But everyone here eventually comes back home,"

It was true. My parents grew up, got married and had me here. This was the same story for most people in this town. It was as if this town had a magnetic pull no matter how far across the world you went you'd always find your way back.

"I think as soon as I cross the border I'm never coming back," Brody said and I twisted my head to look up at him.

I never knew that he'd planned on getting as far away from this town as possible after high school. I mean I guess I never asked. I always assumed like everyone else did that he'd take the football scholarship he was likely to get.

I wanted to crack open his head and understand what made him want to run for the hills. He always seemed so content and knew where he was headed.

How could I have been so wrong about him?

He looked down at me. Tiny locks of his hair had curled at the front and were dangling in his eyes. He brought a handout, brushed it back and focused on my face, "Are you really not going to college after high school?"

I was surprised he had remembered what I had said to his stepmom.

"I think so," I said, "I can't really see what I'd do otherwise. There's no subject that really sticks out to me other than dance and I always preferred it as a hobby than a career, maybe one day I'd set up my own dance studio but I don't know."

"You want to travel instead," He said it as a statement rather than a question.

"Yeah, I do." I nodded. At that moment I had decided that was what I was going to do. I had savings from working at the local cinema over the last couple of summers and was good when it came to budgeting.

Life was too short. I knew that very well.

"Can I come with you?"

I did a double-take and wondered whether I had imagined him saying that. I turned around so my whole body was facing him and looked into his eyes trying to find a trace of a joke. He looked back at me hesitantly almost as if he was nervous and Brody was never nervous. This was the guy who oozed confidence.

Realization dawned on me that he was being serious and I couldn't contain the happiness inside me.

"You really want to come with me?"

"Of course," He smiled, "I can't think of anything else I'd rather do,"

I put my arms around his neck, leaned up and gave him a kiss. It was long, tender and sweet. I pulled back, "We can explore the world together,"

"It'll be our little adventure," He breathed, lifting a hand and stroking my cheek. I leaned into his palm and closed my eyes. If I could relive this moment over and over again I would, but I saved it in the containers of my brain for another day. I opened my eyes and was about to speak when music from outside poured through the window, the sound rushing in like the ocean waves. The song was slow and moving,  the type of song a Prom King and Queen would dance to.

"Would you like to dance m'lady?" His hand stretched towards me and he gave me a smile that was so genuinely sweet it melted my heart.

"I would love to kind sir,"

I take his hand in mine and his hands find my waist, his fingers soft against my exposed skin. He pulls me closer, his sweet breath fanning my face. Our eyes never part as our bodies sway against the music. I  couldn't count how many times he had squished his foot under mine but I didn't care. Everything else around me became a blur as all my energy and focus found its way to him. His lips were inches away from mine and if I stepped closer our lips would meet. When the song ends it brings us out of our daze.

"I want to take you somewhere," His eyes lit up and I cocked a brow.

"Where?"

"It's at my house," I give him a look and he laughs, "Don't worry, it's not my bedroom, even though you've already been in there,"

"Sorry," I said sheepishly remembering the butt rubbing incident last time I was in his room. I really cringed myself out sometimes.

"It's kinda my safe haven other than the lake, but we'll go there too," He rubbed at the back of his head, "Would you like to come? I figured we could spend the rest of the weekend there?"

My lips stretched into a smile that's almost too big for my face and I feel my heart flutter at the thought of spending the whole weekend with him.

"Yes, I'd really like that," I beam.

"Great," He lets out a breath in relief as if he thought I was going to reject him and pulls me closer to him. One brow raises and smirks forms on his face.

"Do you think we could squeeze in a round two before we go?"
