"Will you hold it still? You keep hitting me," I moaned, ducking from the happy birthday bunting Brody kept swinging my way.

"It's quite difficult when this chair is wobbling," He tried to keep his balance on the stool but he ended up swaying like Bambi on ice.

I was very tempted to kick the leg from underneath him.

"For god sake, keep still," I pressed the last pin in the fabric and took a step back admiring my work.

We had confetti balloons hanging from the ceiling, a pink floral buttercream cake that Rose's mom had baked which was standing tall on the table and a happy birthday bunting in the archway that connects the living room to the kitchen.

Rose's mom, Sheila, gave us the spare keys to arrange a surprise birthday party for Rose. She was currently shopping at the mall after school. She normally took a few hours trying on different outfits so we knew we had enough time to prepare and get all the guests comfy before she arrived.

"I've made fifty cupcakes," Ryan called running out of the kitchen in a striped apron, a spoon in his hand and icing on his face.

I rubbed at his cheek, "And how many did you eat?"

He swallowed, his eyes casting downwards with a sheepish expression, "So I made 50 but there's now 40,"

"You ate ten cupcakes?" I exclaimed, "How is that even possible, you were only in there for half an hour," I rubbed at my temple.

Must I have to supervise everyone?

"I'm sorry, they're chocolate chip and-"

"Help,"

We both quickly span towards the loud thump of something heavy hitting the floor to find Brody in a sprawled heap on the ground. The stool was on its side.

"Oh heaven help me. Get up," I reached my hand down and he took it using the support to help him to his feet with a dazed and confused expression on his face.

I really hope he didn't get a concussion.

"I told you the chair was wobbling," He rubbed at the back of his head, wincing at the sore spot.

I let out a groan and flung my hand out pointing at him,"All you had to do was put the bunting up, you had one job. And you," I pointed at Ryan and he jumped, "The cupcakes are for the guests, not your bloody stomach, seriously guys,"

I sank into the nearest chair and put a hand to my face. You cannot get the staff these days.

Ryan sunk into the spot next to me, whilst Brody sat on the other side to me.

Ryan put a hand on my shoulder and gave it a quick squeeze, "Everything will be fine, Rose will love it,"

"Yeah, of course, she will, I mean everything's pink, she loves that kinda stuff," Brody knocked his knee with mine and I looked up to find a genuine smile on his face. The type of smile that warmed his eyes and your stomach.

"I hope so," Rose had always gone to such great lengths when it came to my birthday. I was never any good at it. Something would always go wrong or I'd forget. I wanted this year to be different, special even.

"What time is everyone arriving?" Ryan asked. His phone vibrated in his pocket and he didn't even flinch or check to see who it was from.

Usually, I would think that was strange but I was too preoccupied with everything else to care.

I looked at my watch, "They should be here in the next forty minutes,"

A loud ding from the oven made me jump from my seat. I rushed into the kitchen, opened the oven door and soaked in the waft of cinnamon that crawled its way up my nostrils. We'd made cinnamon raisin cookies, which were Rose's favourite sweet treat. Luckily there hadn't made its way into Ryan's stomach yet.

"They look yummy," Ryan said from over my shoulder and I jumped almost pouring the contents onto the floor from his proximity.

I narrow my eyes at him, "This tray is hot and I will not hesitate to hit you with it,"

"Well, you better hit him as well," Ryan cocks an eyebrow pointing behind me.

I slowly turn to find Brody stood there with his cheeks sticking out like a squirrel with their nuts and chocolate around his lips. Crumbs circled his feet and half a cookie was in his hand.

My eyes widened, "They haven't even cooled from the oven and you are already shoving them in your face?"

"I couldn't resist they smelt so good,"

"We won't have anything left at this rate, we don't have time-"

The jiggle of keys and the sound of the front door creaking open caused us all to freeze in position. I slowly placed the tray onto the side as I heard heels making their way into the living room. Rose's heels. I could recognise those Louboutins anywhere.

Oh no, she was earlier than I thought.

What I didn't expect was to hear a different set of footsteps after hers and even more so the sound of what I believe to be clothes dropping to the floor and moans.

What the hell was going on?

I looked at the boys, who seemed just as puzzled as I was. I slowly crept over and leant against the wall, peering my head around the corner so I could see them but they couldn't see me. I gasped and put a hand to my face. I was frozen, rooted to my spot. After what I'd seen I needed holy water.

Laying on the sofa half-naked was Rose with none other than CRAIG on top of her. I quickly shot my head back to the boys, consciously aware that they were both waiting for me to tell them what was going on. I couldn't even comprehend what was happening a few metres away from me.

Rose and Craig? Craig and Rose?

I'd tried to scramble my head for a legit reason as to why this was happening. Maybe she fell and he ripped her clothes? Or maybe they were actually fighting and I got it all wrong?

Another moan escaping Rose's lip dismissed all my conclusions.

I looked at Brody, her boyfriend, who was in the other room whilst she was cheating and guilt swirled in my stomach. He was leaning against the counter with his arms across his chest with a bored expression on his face. I knew in a matter of seconds that would change. I needed to reduce the damage. When Brody wasn't looking, I gave Ryan a look, the type of look that meant it's about to go down.

His expression instantly became serious as the realisation dawned on him, "Brody, I think we should go,"

Brody's brows pressed together as he whispered, "Why?"

"Oh Craig, I want you so badly," Rose's voice and her words caught Brody's attention and all the colour had drained from his face. His lips held in a thin line and his jaw tightened. His whole demeanour was cold and even I was a little scared.

"Wait don't-" I tried to reach out and stop him from killing Craig but he shrugged my hand off his shoulder and stormed past me.

"Brody, what are you doing here?"

Ryan and I looked at each other with our eyes wide and ran into the living room.

Rose was now hiding her body with a pillow and her face was red as a beetroot and radiated heat like a hot pan. Craig quickly pulled his clothes on, almost tripping over his trousers. They couldn't look us in the eyes.

I was half expecting bloodshed with tiny pieces of Craig scattered around but instead, Brody muttered something under his breath that was inaudible. I saw nothing short of disgust on his face, almost hatred, as he reddened with anger. After a second, he shook his head and walked out.

I wanted the earth to open up and swallow me whole. I wasn't even the one who had been cheating, well this time and I felt mortified.

I couldn't believe this.

"Ivy, I'm sorry, look it just-"

I didn't even bother looking at Rose or acknowledging her apology. My feet were moving before my brain had registered that they were. I ran outside onto the lawn and squinted into the darkness to look for Brody.

How could this have happened?
