Song Above: All My Friends
If you like this story then please check out my new story Me You And Winnie The Pooh! It needs all the love it can get! 😊🐻🍯
"Rose, what are you doing outside my house? And since when did you have black hair?"
Brody exclaimed after screaming all the air out of his lungs. I've never heard such a high pitch noise come from someone with such a low voice. It was terrifying yet incredible at the same time.
"Uh-uh urm-"
"This is your house?" I interjected Rose's stammering as I tried to play dumb.
At the sound of my voice, Brody's eyes widened. He stepped closer to the car, leaned forward and squinted into the darkness, "Ivy, you're here too? What is this?"
"April's fool," I faked a smile, gesturing towards him. My smile dropped when he sighed shaking his head with no amusement in his features.
He gestured to us both, "You two are spying on me, weren't you?"
I exaggerated a gasp, "What? No? Of course not, we'd never do that,"
All the while I'm rambling Rose is sat wide-eyed, mouth agape in her seat. It's as if the lights were on but no one was home.
"We were just about to knock on your door actually," I argued suddenly getting defensive even though I'm the one caught in the act. If all else fails I'll just confuse the hell out of him.
"Explain the wigs then?" He cocked a brow.
"We just came from drama club auditions,"
"You hate drama club," He narrowed his eyes, a dubious expression on his face. I tried to keep a blank expression to conceal the fact my heart was beating rapidly in my chest. He knew I was lying, he knew me too well and because of that, I've just blown our cover.
"They are doing a theatre rendition of Pretty Woman, I couldn't resist,"
He didn't even say anything he just gave me a look that said bull shit.
"We were planning on showing you our audition piece but I guess that's out the window,"
"If you weren't spying, then why does Rose have binoculars?" He exclaimed, widely gesturing to the set she had on her lap.
"Dammit," I muttered under my breath.
"You guys are insane, I can't believe this" He scoffed with a shake of the head and walked away from us.
"Wait," Rose yelled after his retreating frame but he didn't even bother turning around. So now she decided to speak when he was halfway down the driveway. Pussy.
He was mad. Really mad. I don't think he appreciated being spied on. I mean I couldn't blame him, I'd react the same.
I watched as he made his way back inside and just as he went to reach the handle the door flung open. Standing behind it was an older woman with slicked back blonde hair, arched eyebrows, and a silk blue suit. I saw her talking to Brody who hovered on the front step. He looked annoyed about what she was saying as his movement became more exaggerated and he kept letting out huffs of air that were visible from the cold night.
After a couple of seconds, they both turned to look in our direction and Rose and I quickly sank in our seats in the hope they couldn't see us. Our attempt was almost laughable since we stuck out like a sore thumb in Rose's pink Mini Cooper.
The woman said something again and I wished I could lip-read because Brody shook his head and marched towards us.
"Oh shit," We both said in unison.
"Rose start the car and drive," I panicked, my voice low so only she could hear. The way Brody was shooting daggers in our direction could only mean we were in big trouble. I didn't know who the woman was and I didn't want to know.
"Do you have any idea who she is?" I hissed as he neared closer to the car.
Eyes wide and focused on only Brody Rose rapidly shook her head.
I almost jumped when he slammed his hands on the roof of the car, "My stepmom has asked if you two wanted to stay for dinner,"
Dinner? Stepmom?
Out of all the possible outcomes I had conjured in my head which ranged from Brody grabbing us both by our ankles and swinging us above his head, or him pulling out a shotgun or setting a lion on us, I did not expect his stepmom to be inviting us for dinner.
"So is that yes or a no?" He asked impatiently when neither one of us had replied.
"Yeah, of course, I'd like dinner," Rose croaked.
He looked at me and I shrugged my shoulders, "I'm partial to a dinner,"
"Great," He said, even though the way he said it didn't sound great at all, in fact, it sounded far from great in his eyes. He was pissed at us and his stepmom had made him invite us for dinner, what a turn of events.
"See you inside," He muttered turning and walking away for the second time today. His stepmom wasn't in sight anymore. She must have gone inside to start preparations.
I glanced at Rose, who looked as if she was going into cardiac arrest. Her face was pale and her breathing had quickened.
"You okay?" I said slowly.
"This is the first time I'm meeting his family so I'm freaking out a bit,"
"Oh it will be fine," I rolled my eyes.
"It's easy for you to say you aren't dating their son,"
It depends on which son she was talking about.
"What if they don't like me?" She groaned rubbing at her temple.
"They'll love you, but I'd probably take the wig off, blonde suits you better,"
She quickly flung the wig across the dashboard, flattening her hair that had gone static because of the synthetic material. She glanced in the rearview mirror to check her appearance and let out a deep breath.
"If anything awkward happens can you help me do a runner?"
"Of course," I put a hand to my heart, "It would be my pleasure to do a runner with you,"
"Thank you,"
"But of course we'd have to at least had dinner first, you know how much I love food,"
"I know," She chuckled shaking her head.
After a couple of seconds, she paused, turned her body towards me and her eyes softened.
"I know we haven't seen a lot of each other recently, well I mean I know we have seen each other but it hasn't been with just us two alone. I just wanted you to know that I have missed you and today, even though Brody is mad at me, I had fun, a lot actually, we should see each other more,"
I felt my lips curl up into a smile. I didn't realize how much I had missed Rose until today. There was a reason she was my best friend. We'd been through so much together, I could always count on her and she could count on me.
I moved forward and hugged her for a couple of minutes. After a while, I leaned back and went to speak but was silenced by the phone ringing. Rose pressed the answer on her Bluetooth screen and Brody's irritated voice followed.
"Are you two gonna stop lezzing out and get food? The steak will be cold,-"
"Yeah, we are coming," I said rolling my eyes despite the fact he couldn't see.
"Well hurry up, Ryan's waiting for you,"
I felt my stomach sink and the heat rush to my cheeks. He didn't have to say it but I knew from just that small sentence that Brody knew.
He bloody knew.
Dun dun dun!
