Chapter 5
It took all the strength Colin had in him to separate himself from Diana and she was surprised by the sudden action. She watched him as he stood and stared her down. She wanted to know why he had to suddenly be apart from her. He looked as though he were trying to find the right words to say to her as he kept his hand over his mouth. Did kissing her make him want to become sick? She knew she hadn't been kissed but a few times but never bad enough to have someone be sick afterwards.
"Does my kiss repel you?" she questioned as she felt hurt at the thought.
"No, believe me. It is taking all my will power not to ravage you where you sit. I can't though, you wouldn't forgive me, and neither would James...or myself." Colin sighed as he ran his hands through his hair.
"I don't understand." Diana spoke softly as she stood, trying to comprehend what he meant.
"Vampires are very strong, in all aspects Diana. One night with you and if I can't control myself...you might not live through it." Colin answered as he plopped on the sofa.
Blinking repeatedly, she tried to understand him and if what she thought he just said was true...she wondered how her past selves had even been with one of them then.
"Your past lives were with us when we were mortal, never did either of them join our beds once we were no longer mortal." James answered her untold question as he entered the room.
"How do you survive then?" she asked as she looked between the both.
"Whores of the night, Colin needs his release where as I...as you requested tried to move on. Though my heart no longer beats, it will not forget you and will not allow me to be with another." James tells Diana as he walks up and brushes the stray hair from her face.
James had not been with anyone in lord knew how long, Colin was just a few nights ago while Diana couldn't remember her last encounter with a man. Just like any other mortal woman she knew she had needs but she suppressed them and replaced her love life with her job. She had forgotten what a kiss, a light touch any of those feelings were like. That could be why when she kissed Colin she wanted to go further than just a kiss.
"Have either of you been with a mortal besides me?" she asked the only other question that came to her mind.
"Yes, two. One survived, the other did not." Colin said and then cleared his throat. "There are times we can control our strength and blood lust though they are rare. If it does happen, you may find me in your bed."
For a moment, Diana did not mind that thought. James rolled his eyes as he gently touched her shoulder. She focused her gaze on him and James was lost in her eyes. Colin had felt that way, right before they had kissed and he could feel his control shortening.
"I'll be back, I have to go get some more wood." Colin said excusing himself from the room.
"James, tell me what happened. Tell me the story of Katherine." Diana said as she closed her eyes and leaned in gently placing her lips against his.
When she opened her eyes again, she was still with James but the surrounding around her seemed fuzzy. James took her hand and gripped it. Confused she looked up to him as he pointed in the direction behind her. Holding his hand tightly, she turned around and saw two people. It looked like her and James but in older styled clothing.
"The war comes closer to our home, can I call myself and man and your protector if I do not go out and fight for us?" the other version of James questions the woman who looked like Diana but she assumed was Katherine.
"and if you don't return? Then what will become of me? I will die for my only love has sacrificed himself for me only to leave me behind?" Katherine spoke up also bringing up good points.
"I will come back to you." He told her as he took her hands in his and held them to his heart. "My heart will only beat for you, my last breath is only for you and when I return I will make you my wife and we will live out the rest of our lives together, never to be separated again."
Diana then looked to her James with an eye brow raised. This was something she would see on a daytime drama in her time but here it was playing out right before her eyes.
"What?" the vampire James questioned Diana.
"Did you learn all your lines from Shakespeare?" Diana sighed as she looked back to the two but the scene before her eyes changed.
Now they were in a forest, gun shots going off everywhere. Bodies from both the north and the south scattered all around her. In the ditch she could see the mortal James crawling trying to make it to the safety of the woods. If there was any safety in the woods that is. She watched he tumbled down the hill into the depths of the woods right into a ravine. Barely able to stand, she watched as he went from tree to tree. He was injured on his right arm and he used his left to support it.
Stopping at one tree he looked up high into the sky and began to pray to anyone. He prayed someone would hear him and grant him the strength he needed to get back to Katherine. Little did he know the help he was about to get was the help he would come to regret.
A short, old beggar woman came forward and looked him over a few times. She saw his injuries and felt his head for fever to make sure that she hadn't come too late.
"I can help you young man but my help is not free." She told him as he fell to his knees before her.
"Anything, I will give you anything just let me live so I can see my love again." Mortal James pleaded with the woman.
Kneeling down this his level she moved the hair from the side of his neck to behind him. He watched confused for a moment as the woman then met his eyes and smiled, revealing her sharp vampire teeth. His eyes widened but it was too late. She grabbed him and bit into his neck. Diana covered her mouth to prevent from being sick as she turned into James chest. He held her close as his memories played out before him.
"Katherine..." the now turning James voice called out.
Diana looked around, the scene had changed again. Now they were behind a house. A old southern plantation from the looks of it. She saw the James that was either turned or in the process of turning, calling out to Katherine from the ground level and looking up at a window. She assumed that was Katherine's bedroom. The window then opened and Kathrine looked down.
"My love! You have returned to me!" she yelled in a hushed tone. "One moment and I shall be down."
Katherine then shut the windows and came down the stairs, out the back door and right into James arms. She jumped and kissed him as hard as she could when she noticed something was different.
"James...why are you so cold?" Katherine questioned as she backed away from him in fear.
"Katherine Black, I daresay I never thought it would be this easy to find you." A female voice spoke up and everyone turned to see the old beggar woman now looked younger and hungry still. "After all this time, the blood I have been searching centuries for comes from saving her lover. Oh how much fun Karma must have had with this plan."
"The same blood I have?" Diana questions James who nods his head.
"The last of the Eve bloodline shall be mine." The vampire woman said and with a snap of her fingers, James was held down by four other vampires that came out of nowhere.
"NO! LET HER GO! YOU HAVE MY BLOOD! YOU DON'T NEED HER!" the new vampire James yells at the woman.
"Yours is not as special as hers, her family are direct descendants of Eve. Now I will live forever! Never having to feast on you mortal fools but now with her blood, having eternal life." The vampire chuckled looking at Katherine.
"No Claudia, three times over and three times undone. I call upon my own descendants! Reborn twice more, with the same blood you yearn for from me, twice you get but on the last, none you shall receive. In my third life, I will end you and my line!" Katherine barely had a chance to speak as the vampire charged at her and sucked her dry.
Other vampires charged inside the house and killed all they found in it. The past James thrashed trying to break free of the hold the other vampires had over him but nothing he did worked. He watched in horror as the same monster that saved his life, took the only woman he had ever loved and sucked all the blood from her body. Once she was done, the vampire let Katherine's body fall to the ground. Her light no longer in her body, her skin gone pale and her life diminished.
"Then two more times I will suck her dry.'' The vampire cackled as she whistled and her group of vampire answered her call. "Burn the house."
"What about him?'' another vampire asked referring to James.
"Let him live, he will now have to live with the pain and agony of knowing he led me right to her and couldn't save her." She grinned as she walked right up to him. "You will never have her or her new lives."
Then another scene unfolded. It was James, starring down at a gravestone. Diana already knew who it was. Katherine Black, the same gravestone she had visited many times before and too put flowers at. James stared at the stone for what seemed like eternity.
Then everything went back to normal. They were back at the house James had built and Diana held him tightly. James didn't want her pity for he felt he did not deserve it. Then he felt her look up at him.
"She was wrong, you have me and you even tried to save Victoria. I am so sorry for what that witch did to yo-" Diana didn't get to finish her answer as James grabbed her and kissed her.
She could feel the emotions again, the want and need of wanting to go further as she deepened the kiss. James had backed Diana up against a wall and was beginning to kiss down her neck and could even hear the hints of enjoyment in her voice when he was thrown away from her and blocked by Colin.
"You can't and you know it!" Colin said as he held his ground. "It would kill her, this is it. You said so yourself, this is her last life and we can't waste it!"
James groaned because he knew Colin was right. Dusting himself off, James could still sense the want and need coming from Diana, she had no idea she was giving it off but she had almost reached the point of pushing Colin out of the way and jumping on James. Colin could sense it as well and tried the best he could to control himself as well.
"I think I need to go for a walk." Diana said as she walked out of the house. "Or even a drink for that matter."
