Chapter 9: Truth Untold

Namjoon went back to his house, carrying Dami to her room and placing her on the bed. As he made sure Dami looked comfortable on the bed, he rushed out and came back with the aid kit. He perched next to her, cleaning up the blood from her wound on her cheek.

'Why are you being like this, Yoobin...' he thought, berating himself yet again. Not for blaming himself for the trouble that seemed to found her, no but for the none-existent trace as for who Dami actually was. He needed to find out pronto, as her alter ego was making an appearance more as time went on. Proven recently, when he tried to stop her from killing the guy, he saw the same dead eyes from when she tried to kill Nayeon.

'There must be something about your past that made you like this, but for the life of me I can't seem to find it!' Namjoon scowled, deep in his thoughts. After he cleaned up the bloodied cotton balls, he put a band aid on her cheek. He grasped her head carefully with his fingers, turning her head to see if there was other injuries he didn't notice. Luckily, there was nothing serious except a bruise on the top of her head that he thought she had been struck, hard. Ouch.

Namjoon stood up, shaking his head at the increasing number of times she had been unconscious from a fight. He walked out from her room and closed the door slowly. Going to the bathroom, he threw away the cotton balls that he used to wipe Dami's blood from her wound into the trashcan and placed the aid kit inside the cabinet. Then, he washed his hands from any blood and gunk that somehow stuck to his hands. He wiped his hands dry with a towel and went to the living room.

Namjoon sighed, plopping on the couch and he took out a cigarette box from his pocket. He took out a bud, and put one between his lips. Hey, Dami was not in the room, and there was nothing better to do. Mentally shrugging, he lit it up with his lighter and took a long draw.

"I need to dig her secret out before she find out herself..."

-----------------

Yoobin... run...

He's...going to kill you...

-----------------

Dami slowly opened her eyes and she looked up at the familiar ceiling. She remained in the bed for a moment to recollect what she just dreamt. The dreams were unsettling for sure, but a lingering familiarity rings somewhere in her head. That in itself was odd, other than the times she had these dreams. Deciding to think on it later, she got up from her bed and walked out from her room. As she proceeded to the living room, she smelled some delicious aroma coming from the kitchen.

That time, Namjoon walked out with two plates of omelette rice and put them on the table as he looked up and saw Dami.

"Morning. How's your cheek?" he asked. Dami went to the mirror in the living room and saw that a band aid was on her cheek. She peeled it off slowly and surprisingly, the wound was completely healed. Poking at her cheek, she felt no pain nor any stinging at all but the wound still can see it clearly so she will change to new band aid to cover her cheek.

She replied with a simple,"Meh." She went back to the dining area and sat in front of Namjoon. Whilst she and Namjoon were enjoying their breakfast, Namjoon remembered about the bruise on her head.

"Does your head still hurt?" he asked and Dami shook her head.

Dami however was busy thinking about the reoccurring dreams that she had recently. "Oppa. I dreamt something weird last night," she spoke to Namjoon, furrowing her brows as she stared at her plate.

"You have weird dreams all the time. What's so special about this one?" said Namjoon.

"But this time I always get the same dream. It's the same guy trying to warn me about something. He said 'Yoobin, run. Don't let him find you' or something like that." Dami paused for a second. "I thought my name is Dami?"

Namjoon snapped in attention from Dami's question. "D-didn't I mention it to you before? Our parents gave you your nickname Yoobin."

"Ouh yeah, you did." Dami nodded. Luckily, Dami believed his words and continued eating her breakfast. After they were done and Namjoon had finished washing the dishes, he went back to the dining area to see Dami still frozen in her seat.

"You wanna go to school or not?" Namjoon spoke to her and Dami snapped her head up, realizing she was too lost in thought. She nodded in reply.

"Then, go get dressed." Dami got up from her seat and rushed towards the bathroom. Yet again, Namjoon sat on the couch and took out his cigarette and lit it up. While he was having a smoke, he recalled what Dami had told him about her dream.

'Was that your memories from your past, Yoobin?' he thought.

______________

The two assassins finally arrived at school, and they walked up the stairs where the classrooms were located. Going through the halls, they noticed the students were staring and glancing at them before they turned, whispering with each other.

"Why're these weirdos always looking at us like that?" Namjoon muttered. While Dami seemed to not care of her surroundings and proceeded to the classroom.

As they arrived, they walked into the classroom and the noise immediately decreased into a dead silence, and their classmates turned around with their eyes glued on the duo. Namjoon was already starting to get annoyed by the idiots that roamed the halls. Unbothered Dami saw Heejin reading a textbook at her desk.

"Heejin!" Heejin turned around and saw Dami waving at her. She walked to her seat and put her bag on the chair. Then, she went to Heejin and sat in front of her classmate.

"Good morning," Dami greeted Heejin with a smile.

"M-morning," Heejin replied.

"How are you?"

"Great." Heejin replied shortly. Glancing at Dami's band aid at her cheek, she noted the wound she received yesterday as she recalled what happened last night.

-------------

Dami was one blow away from killing the stranger but out of nowhere, Namjoon and two others she didn't recognize were just in time to stop her. She was a bit worried as Dami was completely different than the one she saw in class. This Dami was not the same, intimidating girl who beat up her classmates on the streets. This Dami had the intention to kill.

Right as Namjoon stopped her, she collapsed and Namjoon took her home while Yuju, the lady that came along with Namjoon accompanied Heejin back home. She stayed just long enough to see the other was left alone with the gangsters.

Heejin was still processing what happened and winced as she thought of the mobsters' fate. Judging by their relationship with Dami, nothing good will happen to them. Still, she felt no pity at all.

"Still thinking about those gangsters?" Yuju spoke next to her. Heejin shook her head.

"Don't worry. Those punks are still alive. My boyfriend will take care of them," Yuju informed Heejin.

"But..."

"You must be shocked when you saw Dami becoming a devil reincarnate right?" Yuju asked Heejin. She looked down and didn't say anything. Her nodding head was the only reply.

"Well, that was not her first time anyway." Heejin looked sharply at Yuju's statement.

"When was the last time she was.." Heejin's question tapered off, unable to voice aloud what Dami turned into.

Yuju nodded. "A few days ago, we were approached by some bad guys. Dami tried to help me and my boyfriend but she got knocked down with a bat. They beat her bloody, and we couldn't help her because there were others that kept us busy. Even Namjoon, who fought tooth and nail to get to her were blocked by those bulls."

"N-Namjoon was there too?"

"Yes. He was raging mad when one of them decided to choke her. Adding to the fuel was blood running from her head." Heejin pulled a face, sending prayers to Dami's head as she remembered the fight and the blows Dami received from her classmates a couple of hours ago.

"Then, what happened?" Heejin asked again.

"Dami wrapped that guy's arm, twisted as he fell down then, she broke his arm." Heejin's eyes widened as she looked at Yuju.

Yuju continued, "They were as shocked as we were, especially when she was able to still stand up. My boyfriend and Namjoon came to help and Dami went face to face with the boss. She knocked the leader down and punched her relentlessly. We knew Dami was aiming to kill her, and that's when Namjoon stopped her."

"Just like when he stopped her from killing that guy just now?"

"Sort of. My presumption on all this is that the devil inside of her will appear when she sees her friends getting hurt. Only then she'll have to kill those that hurt her friends."

Heejin came to a conclusion from Yuju's points. "B-but... I'm just one of her classmates. Besides...I don't want to be friends with anyone."

"You may not act like you want her as your friend but not for Dami. When you girls met today, she instantly thought that you're her friend. I know it sounds weird but that's her style of making friends." Heejin remained silent, contemplating what she just heard.

"But I hope you won't feel too scared of her. Dami might not remember clearly what happened, but she will turn back to normal tomorrow." Just as she finished talking, they stopped right in front of Heejin's house.

"Looks like we're here," said Yuju and she turned back the way they came without saying a goodbye.

"Wait. What's your name?" Heejin spoke out loud towards the retreating figure.

Yuju smirked and turned around. "Just call me 'Friend'. See ya." Yuju walked on, leaving Heejin on the sidewalk.

--------------

Yuju's words still echoed in her head while she went to bed last night. Since then, she kept thinking if she wanted to be friends with Dami. Ultimately, it all came down to Dami's double personality. Would she want to be friends with someone fought? Who would kill others if she decided that they were dangerous?

And still, the positive side of this was the protection from anyone who decided to harm her. That was clear from what happened yesterday. Plus, the lack of presence from the resident bully was a plus sign for her. And the school too as the chatter immediately flared when they saw that the certain group was not terrorizing the halls.

"Heejin, are you alright?" Dami waved her hand in front of Heejin's face and Heejin shook her head as she realized that she had been thinking for too long.

"Y-yeah I'm alright. H-how's your cheek?" she pointed at the scar on her cheek.

"Doesn't hurt at all," she grinned. Heejin nodded, but still worried as she could see the healing scar on her lips.

"But I don't remember much what happened yesterday..."

"Err... You know what? Let's just forget about it." Heejin changed the topic.

"Okay~" Dami made a pouting face and turned her head around as she looked around the classroom.

"So, Yeji and her friends didn't come to school?"

"I-I guess," said Heejin, unsure of it herself.

"I didn't hit her too harsh though."

Before any of them could comment anymore about their missing classmates, the school bell rang and the teacher walked into the classroom to begin the class.

___________

The school bell rang, signalling time for recess. Some students were already rushing towards the cafeteria while others were still in class, including the duo and Heejin.

"Oppa, wake up. Enough hibernating." Dami shook the occupant next to her but Namjoon refused to get up from his seat.

"Just go with Heejin, idiot. I'm not hungry," Namjoon mumbled into his arms, unwilling to get up.

"Fine." Dami gave up and stood up from her seat. She went to Heejin and patted her from behind which made Heejin surprised from reading her book.

"Heejin, let's go to lunch together~" asked Dami. Heejin nodded and put her textbook inside her school bag. She stood up from her seat and they walked out from the classroom.

Realizing they were one person short, Heejin stopped as she turned around to see if Namjoon was following them."Namjoon not joining us?" she asked Dami.

"Meh. His nap time is more important than eating." Heejin nodded and turned around, walking down the hall with Dami.

Waiting patiently when they were gone and so did others in the classroom, Namjoon lifted his head up to see if the coast was clear. Seeing the door was shut, he got up from his seat and went to Heejin's table. He unzipped her bag and checked to see anything suspicious inside Heejin's bag. Digging deeper, he felt an empty small box nestled inside a hidden zipper. He set his eyes on the brand name, and the pieces finally clicked. He found the reason of Heejin's motive to hire them.

"So that's why she keeps vomiting all the time..." He took the box with him and put it inside his pocket. Zipping the bag closed, he went back to his seat and put his head on the table, dozing off right after.

Meanwhile.

Dami and Heejin went to the cafeteria and dreaded as they saw students already filing up, a long line formed as they waited their turn to get their food.

Dami huffed, "Man, the line's already long."

"The students are hungry at this time. They have to come quickly to avoid from getting in a long line like this."

"Oh man. Now, we have to get into this long line and wait for our turn to get our food."

"Hmm... Why don't you go find some seats while I get our food."

"No, I don't want to trouble you."

While they were waiting and nearing where the food was, a couple of female students were having quite a loud chat in front of Heejin and Dami. Then, one of them bumped into Heejin, making her groan in pain. But none of the girls apologized to her nor noted what they had done at all.

Dami screwed her face as she couldn't stand their insensible behaviour. She patted one of the girls' shoulder and they turned as one as they saw Dami catching her attention.

"Hey you. My friend got hurt because your elbow went flying and hit her."

"So?" said the girl.

"I want you to apologize to her," Dami jutted her chin up.

"Hah! Who the hell are you trying to make us apologize to this stranger?" the girl yapped loud enough that students around them heard the commotion.

"Dude, I think it's better if you go apologize to her before something bad happens," her friend whispered harshly.

"Hell no! I'm not gonna apologize to her!" she exclaimed. Then, her other friend pulled her around and whispered briskly to her ears. The girl's expression changed every second whilst her eyes widened.

Dami and Heejin glanced at each other, Dami raising her eyebrows and Heejin shrugged in return.

Shortly after that, the elbow jabber went to Heejin and bowed down while she apologized.

"I-I'm sorry for hurting you and for m-my bad behavior just now."

"Her name is Jeon Heejin," said Dami.

"I-I'm sorry, Jeon Heejin." Heejin pulled her up as she looked around,  embarrassed. She did not want the girl bow at her.

"I-it's okay. It doesnt not hurt at all." said Heejin.

"Here, you can cut our line and get the food first. We don't mind," the girl offered.

"E-eh? It's okay. It's almost our turn now," Heejin refused.

"Take it as my apology," the girl said as she pulled Heejin to the front and Dami followed from behind. Then, Dami turned around looked at the girls. She raised her hand and they were all startled, afraid that she might beat them up but Dami's hand were on top of the girl's head.

"Thank you~" Dami grinned as she patted the girl's head while the rest only stared wide eyed, glad that their souls were not to be taken that day. Even the girl's face was pale.

After they got their food, they went to some empty seats and began eating. Dami was busy eating until her stomach was full, while Heejin took little bites of food. Just as sudden, she stopped eating, looking like she lost her appetite.

Dami looked up as her friend drop her chopsticks on her plate. "Heejin, why'd you stop eating?"

"I..I don't know. I don't feel hungry."

"You have to eat or you will vomit again. Your grandma was worried about you yesterday. If you can't eat all of it, at least eat half so your tummy is not left empty the rest of the day and you can only blame yourself if you have a stomach ache."

"I-I will try." Heejin listened to Dami and she tried to finish her food. Even though she couldn't finish it all, she was able to eat half of the food and the rest she gave it to Dami to eat.

After Dami and Heejin had their break together, they decided to spend the last of recess in the class. On their way to the classroom, other students still kept staring at Dami, and Heejin looked at her companion, wondering of her opinion about their sudden behaviour.

"Dami, don't you feel uncomfortable?" Heejin spoke quietly to Dami.

Dami shook her head, oblivious of the stares she received. "Nope. Why?"

"You know the students are staring at you right now, right? Even, when we are in line to get our lunch, wasn't it weird they let you pass?" Heejin asked again at Dami.

"No, they let 'us' be the first in line. Besides, I thought they were already staring at me and Namjoon since yesterday."

Heejin shook her head, "No, they kept talking about you and Namjoon because you guys are the first transfer students that dye their hair on the first day of school. Today, they kept talking about you because you defeated Yeji and her gang alone with just your bare hands."

"So, that's why they stare at me. Because I kicked their ass?" Dami cleared the point shortly, albeit crudely with her language. Heejin stopped short for a second, baffled she took it so smoothly and nodded.

Dami looked ahead, thinking that high school wasn't so hard after all. The classes weren't a challenge at all, and what problem the school seemed to have she settled with a few slaps on the wrist. Heh, guess Namjoon was right, it was kinda boring.

She glanced at the side, just in time to see a group of girls looking hard at her. Then, Dami narrowed her eyes as she curled lips. They quickly turned back and looked away from her eyes and Dami internally laughed as she teased them. 'All bark and no bite huh'.

Next to her, Heejin suddenly cupped her mouth and ran off somewhere, leaving Dami behind.

"Heejin?" Dami was curious of her sudden departure and followed Heejin until they reached the restroom. Heejin went to the sink and hurled out what she ate as Dami patted her back, trying to make her feel better.

"Heejin, are you alright? You've been puking since yesterday," said Dami. Heejin nodded and tried to catch some air. Just as her puking came to a stop, she gargled her mouth with water.

A few spits later, after her mouth was not tasting weird, she mumbled, "I-I'm okay. Don't worry."

"You always say the same thing. Are you hiding something from me?"

"N-no. I'm not keeping any secrets from you. Look, I'm alright. Maybe it's because I skip my meals all the time. Don't worry too much, okay?" Heejin patted Dami's shoulder and walked away.

"Heejin..." Dami spoke her name, making Heejin stop walking.

"There are people that I especially hate in this world." Dami turned around and looked at Heejin.

"Liars." Heejin staggered back as if she was hit by Dami. She stubbornly remained silent and flunked out of the restroom, leaving Dami alone.

Dami sighed looking down at the bathroom tiles. She went to the sink as she glanced at herself in the mirror. She turned her head a little to look at her cheek which still had the band aid on it. Peeling off the bandage, she checked her scar which had already healed even though it had not been a full day yet.

Looking long and hard at her reflection, she needed a reality check. Because she was not expecting this at all. Her easy life seemed too good to be true. Reconnecting with her brother, Namjoon was easy, as she was a natural with weapons and fighting. And his behaviour went from brooding to practicing with his weapons.

Being close friends with Jackson and Yuju was like fuel to a fire. In a short period of time, she was getting along with them so well that most times it resulted in Namjoon pulling his hair out.

But Heejin was something else. She wanted to be her friend, really, and she knew that Heejin needed one too. But she couldn't figure out why she was pushing Dami away.

"I know you're hiding something, Heejin..." she muttered. She threw the bandage away and walked out of the restroom.

As soon as she walked inside the classroom, she went straight to her seat as she passed Heejin who was doing her own business. She slumped down on her seat and put her head on the table. She turned around and glanced at Namjoon who was still in the same position when she and Heejin went to the cafeteria.

She poked his head and his cheek and Namjoon grabbed her hand, succeeding in stopping her from annoying him without opening his eyes. He turned his head and narrowed his eyes at her, daring her to do it again. Unexpectedly, Dami didn't give a single reaction at all.

"What's wrong, idiot," he asked.

"I don't know," she mumbled.

Namjoon knew waking up was in order, as he sat straight and glanced at Dami. He knew just what to cheer her up. Well, lessen the depressed state she was in in the moment. He grabbed something out from his pocket.

"I found this from the caller's bag," he voiced in a mere whisper so as not to get overheard and gave the box to Dami. She glanced at the item, recognizing the name on the label instantly.

"So, that's why..."

Finally, I know what you're hiding, Heejin....
