Chapter III - A Sweet Escape

The days seemed to come and go while Alec endured a long healing process. Y/N couldn't seem to shake off the fear that had been creeping up on her at the thought of an Eidolon in the Institute. She visited Alec every single day and he always seemed to find a way to make the fear fade. It seemed silly that such cold hearts could warm up, but that's how it was when the two were together.

It was a freezing below-zero day, when Magnus dropped by. He knocked on the Institute door and Alec opened it, limping. Magnus gave him a smile. "I see you are doing better Alexander." Alec nodded and gestured for him to come in. "It's warmer in here than out there." Magnus stepped in, the door slamming behind him. "Nasty weather we've had lately. I heard Y/N's favorite student left? How's she holding up?" Magnus questioned. The other boy shrugged, running a hand through his dark hair. "I'm not even sure anymore. She's in her room if you intended on seeing her," Alec says.

Magnus smiles widely. "Strangely enough I wanted to!" Alec chuckled and patted his shoulder before limping back to the room he was staying in at the moment. Magnus climbed the magnificent steps to the top, his eyes scanning the walls. Suspicion hedged his mind, but his boundaries needed to be put back up. Every time he saw Y/N then just seemed to fall. He just wanted to bring her into his arms and kiss her till she bruised. Shaking his head in frustration, Magnus knocked on her door, running a rough hand through his hair.

The oak wood slid open and Y/N smiled. She stepped close and hugged him, tight knots gathering in her stomach. Breathing in Magnus' woodsy scent once more, she stepped back. Y/N spoke, "It's so good to see you Maggie! I'm bored stiff! Alec's not doing anything fun anyway." She pouted a little. With a good-humored laugh, he patted her head. Y/N scowled and fixed her hair quickly, slapping his hand. "Stoooooop Maggie!" she exclaimed. He smiled and laughed again.

"So, you remember that mission you needed help on?" Magnus asked Y/N. She nodded and dropped onto her bed. Pulling a notebook out from under the bed, she read her mission papers that had been sent from the Clave.

Dear Y/N M/I L/N,

We are pleased to tell you that you have been accepted as our missioner this month. We have heard about a few vampires are planning to attack the New York Institute in a matter of days. We are not sure of the exact date, but we can assure you that we are working hard to find that out. If you would so kindly help us out here in this time of struggle. The award will be presented to you and we hope you can help us.

Please get together a team of five people (shadowhunters mainly), to help defeat these vampires. Your job is to find them, find as much information on them as you can, report to us, and we will take care of the rest. Always keep an eye out for them as they are actually quite tricky. Now good luck.

Sincerely,

The Clave

Y/N looked up from the letters and glanced at Magnus, who was pacing before her. Finally, he threw up his hands in frustration. "What?" Y/N finally asked. His voice dropped to a whisper. "Why'd you pick me? Aren't you supposed to pick shadowhunters?" he asked. She dropped her head with a small smile. "Magnus. You have always been a treasured friend and I'm sure that you would do the work of a thousand shadowhunters.

"You also have this way with words. I'm not sure how to even tell you about that. And for a start, you're an amazing person and I really hope you can work with me," Y/N said glancing up at Magnus. He smiled largely and sat down beside her pulling her into a hug. "Thank you, Y/N." He kissed her forehead and held her closer. Y/N smiled in content, wrapping her arms around his neck, burying her face into Magnus's shoulder. The tight knots grew tighter and the butterflies were released.

She was falling in love again.
