TWELVE. mama's boy

A BACHELORETTE party was something that Alexa had never thought about in her life.

Maybe when she was twelve and had no concept of love and having no backbone, but she was almost 30 and was dating a man who had a child of his own.

It was enough for her right now.

But here Alexa was, standing in Carly and Harper's apartment as they held a bachelorette party for Ms. Benson.

She was getting married to Lewbert soon and this party was for her and her only.

She (Ms. Benson), had invited Alexa, Carly, Harper, Millicent, and her friend Danica over to celebrate her newest chapter of her life.

"Okay, Danica, spill the beans." Ms. Benson smiled, sipping her drink, "Where are we going for my bachelorette party, hmm? Burlesque seafood buffet in Reno?"

"The theme was going to be Trapped in a mine. You know, because marriage is a trap. But Carly vetoed my idea without so much as a petite rendezvous."

Alexa sighed, "Carly wants us to go to Ohio."

"Wait." Ms. Benson called, "Are we gonna be on my favorite TV show Toledo House Flip?"

"No." Carly answered, "But we are going to Party Like They Do on Toledo House Flip Experience." She smiled, "You know how gals go to New York to do the Sex and the City tours? So, it's gonna be exactly like that, except we're going to be "remodeling" a house in the Midwest. We're going to have so much fun. Placing succulents in corners, and choosing between zebra and giraffe wallpaper. And screwing in Edison light bulbs while drinking mimosas."

"So you changed the entire weekend on a whim?" Ms. Benson asked, "Classic Carly."

Alexa stepped forward, "Don't worry. Harper and I approved the itinerary... which means a lot to Harper."

"I'm the queen of bachelorette parties." Harper smiled.

"You've been a maid of honor before?" Ms. Benson asked.

"14 times. All featured in Bachelorette Party magazine."

"Self-published." Millicent muttered.

Soon, Freddie entered the apartment and held Alexa by her arm, "Did you tell her? Did she freak out? Did she... flip?"

Alexa only smiled as Freddie held her hands. The two of them had swiftly turned their attention from each other on to Ms. Benson who had called her son over.

But he didn't seem to care much about his mothers calls as he went around the room telling everyone goodbye.

"And to the one I'm going to miss the most..." He paused; Ms. Benson rushing around the counter to say goodbye, "Alexa." Freddie smiled.

The girl smiled as Freddie wrapped his arms around her torso and pulling her in once more for a goodbye hug and kiss.

Alexa smiled, resting her head on Freddie's shoulder the looked over at Ms. Benson.

"Oh, did you say anything Mom?" Freddie asked.

"I don't recall."

Freddie only nodded and waved everyone off and left apartment.

Next thing everyone knows is that the girls are in Toledo and standing in a very disgusting house they had to remodel.

"How fun is flying Southwest?" Carly asked, "You never know where you're gonna sit."

"That's why you take first class." Alexa smiled, "Which you revoked everyone from doing when I offered to pay."

"Is this a murder house?" Millicent asked, looking at the outline of a body on the floor.

Suddenly, the closet door opened and a woman stepped out holding an axe in her hands as the others screamed.

"There was never a conviction." She spoke in a singsongy voice.

Alexa stepped forward, but not too close to the woman, "Listen, on the brochure it never mentioned how... meth-y this place was."

The woman only smiled, "Welcome ladies, I'm Emily Haines, and I'm honored you booked the Party Like They Do on Toledo House Flip Experience. Rehabbing a home is good for the soul."

Danica stepped up, pushing Ms. Benson forward, "This is the bride, Marissa. I'm the maid of honor. One would think I would've been the one to pick what we're doing this weekend, but one would be wrong."

"Now, I just need one member of the group to signed here so we can get started." Emily said and passed the tablet over to Carly.

"I know it's called Party Like They Do on Toledo House Flip, but it's strange because it seems like we're about to be doing actual labor?" Harper said.

"I own a multimillion dollar company" Alexa spoke, "I do enough work as it is."

"Relax, it's all part of the experience." Emily reassured, "Plus, you get to wear jumpsuits!"

"Great!" Alexa smiled, "Manual labor and prison wear. Can't wait to get started."

"Never underestimate the power of women in pink jumpsuits." Carly smiled.

"Amen." Emily praised, "Now, pass over your phones. When we unplug from the world, we plug in with each other."

Alexa sighed and one by one each them place their phones into the box and they got to work.

Like, manual that none of them asked for.

So, they decided to play a game of Truth or Hammer... kind of like truth or drink, but with a hammer and hitting walls.

"Okay, Alexa's turn." Danica smiled as Ms. Benson growled, "What's the most romantic thing you and Freddie have done?"

"Oh," Alexa chuckled, "we're supposed to be going on this two-day cruise on the second Sunday in May."

"Mother's day weekend?!" Ms. Benson shouted and repeatedly smashed the wall with the hammer, "Why wasn't I invited?"

"Because that would be weird." Harper muttered.

"Marissa, let's put down the hammer." Danica spoke softly, "You're not storming the Bastille."

Ms. Benson dropped the hammer on the ground and cried, "I want to go home."

And as soon as they opened the door, Emily stood in the other side.

"Where do you think you're going?" She asked, "You're trapped."

"What do you mean trapped?" Alexa asked.

"Perhaps I was being a dot dramatic." Emily said, "You can leave anytime. Once the house is flipped. It's all explained here."

Emily held the tablet in her hands and everyone sighed.

"In the wavier Carly signed." Alexa sighed, "Of course it was."

"She signed for your entire group unilaterally." Emily paused, "It's not a wavier. It's an employment contract."

"That HGTV B-I-T-C-H has our phones." Harper said.

"I say we smash that case." Ms. Benson said.

"Go ahead." Emily smiled, "My fiancé made this lockbox, and he designed the deathtraps for the movie Saw. Ladies, you're just contracted construction workers until the home is done. Simple pimple."

"This contact doesn't include a minor's permit." Millicent said, "I'm well-versed in Ohio's child labor laws."

"Guess that makes you my co-captain. You up for delineating task while drinking cold sparking apple cider?"

"Keep the meaningless title. I accept the power and the juice."

"Okay," Alexa stepped forward, "how long will this take? I have other projects that actually need my time and attention."

"I had a party flip a house in two days. Well, a 500-square-foot studio. Never underestimate the power of women in pink jumpsuits."

Carly rounded the group together, "Don't worry, we've got this. Because we, including me, are dependable, decisive, straight-spined gals."

"Oh, has anyone been up to the second floor?" Emily asked.

"There's a second floor?" They asked simultaneously.

THE WORK continued and Ms. Benson was slowly losing her mind. They had all figured out that Ms. Benson's freak outs had been towards Alexa and Freddie's relationship and she was now hiding in the house... somewhere.

"I'm in the walls, suckas!"

"I can't sell this house with a woman in the wall. That's a 20,000 dollar markdown." Emily cried.

"Wait, I thought you were an event planner." Alexa said, "You're the realtor?"

"Damn, girl, you got capitalism figured out." Harper spoke.

"If any of you ever want to leave, you better get her out of there."

"Now it looks like we're talking to something and not an actual wall." Millicent smiled, showing a stick figure on the wall.

"I know you can hear us, Ms. Benson." Alexa called.

"I can't hear you, Alexa."

"You have to come out of the walls!"

"Leave me be. This is my safe space."

"Do most safe spaces have asbestos?" Harper asked.

The front door swung open and Spencer, Freddie, Lewbert, and Paul entered.

"We're here!" Spencer shouted.

"You came to rescue us?" Alexa asked.

"Yes, we did." Freddie smiled, "Like four gallant kni-ahh!"

He suddenly screamed along with the others and fell on the floor.

"What in God's name is happening?" Millicent asked.

"We've been drinking Lewb Juice." Lewbert answered, "It's a foot exfoliant, which is why we can't walk."

"It's also a truth serum which is why I want one of those jumpsuits in an XL so I can feel like I belong." Spencer smiled, "Oh!"

Alexa rolled her eyes, turning towards Freddie, "Where's my mom?" He asked.

"Turns out your mom hates us together and now she's in the walls."

"Classic Mommy." He muttered, struggling to stand, "All right, I'll get her out."

But because he struggled to stand, he wasn't able to get her, so, reluctantly, Alexa made her way into the crawl space and kicked the vent open, finding Ms. Benson drinking.

"I'm suing the hell out of Carly after this." Alexa coughed, "Come on, Ms. Benson, we've got to get out of here."

"No. You can't come into my safe space."

"Enough, okay." Alexa sighed, sitting down, "We both love Freddie so much. We should try and be on the same team."

"Freddie and I were a team. But ever since you've come back into his life it's like he put me on the bench. I hate sports."

Alexa softly sighed, "I'm sorry. I didn't realize it was like that for you."

Soon, the was a banging sound.

"Alexa, that is so loud." Ms. Benson complained.

"Marissa!" Lewbert shouted, "I will get you out of there!"

The two of them sat in silence before Alexa looked up.

"Do you hate me?" She asked.

"I don't hate you, Alexa." Ms. Benson reassured, "I just hate change, especially when it comes to Freddie. I can't believe you crawled into the wall for me because of your obvious characters flaws."

"I can and will sue you for defamation if this continues." Alexa paused, "But you're cool and funny. I've always been team Benson and maybe someday, I'll be a Benson, too." She smiled.

"Mm."

"Sorry. I think the asbestos are getting to me." Alexa sighed, "Don't tell Freddie anything I said. I will lie and sue."

"What happens in the wall stays in the wall." Ms. Benson smiled, "But if you think he's marrying you, you've had a bit too much grenadine."

"Okay then." Alexa smiled, "Let's get out of here." She said, handing the hammer to Ms. Benson.

Soon enough, they were out of the wall and with the others.

"Your girlfriend rescued me."

"Oh, my favorite girls," Freddie smiled, "get in here. Alexa, Mom, Millicent!"

"I'm a'ight."

Emily soon stepped out, "Well, ladies, this house looks even worse than what you started. I'm glad you found a passel of men to help, because at the pace you're going, you'll be in Ohio for months to fulfill the terms of your contract."

"I'd like to talk about your little employment contract." Lewbert said.

"Oh, snap, it's his lawyer voice." Spencer smiled.

"I perused your contact and it fails to address the fact that Ohio is an at-will employment state."

"But they signed—"

Lewbert continued, "Which means an employee may quit their job at any time for any reason. Regardless of a contract. So, unless you'd like to face charges of kidnapping, fraud, then I suggest you refund these ladies' money and never speak of this again."

Emily didn't bother staying, she ran out of the house leaving the group alone.

Alexa would never return to Ohio... ever.
