EIGHT. remember to forget you
FREDDIE ALWAYS made hisbirthday a bigger event than it should've been, but with him now in a relationship with Pearl, it was on tenfold.
Pearl was planning Freddie's party and though he'd mention several times both verbally and figuratively that he wanted to have murder mystery theme, Pearl sat down with Carly, Alexa, and Harper that the theme of the party was crows.
"Everyone knows it no mystery that a group of crows is called a murder. So, naturally he wants a party all about our fine-feathered friends." Pearl explained.
"I highly doubt that's what he meant." Alexa spoke.
"Alexa, I'm his girlfriend. I think I know what he means."
Alexa sighed, "Okay, Pearl. It's called Devil's advocate and people come to these parties where they role-play and wear costumes and figure out who did it. And I would be so happy to play the murderer just so I can playful stab you in the eye." She smiled
Carly shifted in her seat and awkwardly laughed, "I think she means that Freddie is just obsessed with the genre."
"In addition to his obsession with crows." Harper added.
"Devil's advocate, I feel pretty good about this crow idea." Pearl smiled, "And not just because I already bought 400 fake birds that aren't returnable because I got them wet."
"He was very specific in what he wanted." Alexa said, "He sent us a bunch of kits with the Devil's advocate idea to choose from."
"Oh, God, this is so embarrassing. Okay. yeah, I guess we should choose a kit." Pearl said, "But can we all agree he really should've been clearer about which kind of murder he meant?"
"Mm-hmm. Every time I'm watching the local news and they talk about murder, I'm like, "Where are the crows?"." Harper smiled.
Pearl began looking down at Alexa's phone as they scrolled through the different kits. Pearl was pretty adamant about the whole "adding birds" no matter what.
"That's boring." Alexa smiled, "What about Murder at the Disco? Freddie loves Disco."
Carly smiled, "We could wear really fun '70s costumes. It'll be perfect."
"Disco?" Pearl questioned, "I didn't even know Freddie liked music. One time I put on Imagine Dragons and he didn't even tap his foot." Pearl turned her attention on Alexa, "You know, maybe you should just plan the party. Clearly I don't know him at all."
"Look, I've known Freddie for years, okay? And over the years, things can change. Like you said, you're girlfriend. You can just do both ideas."
"That's great." Carly smiled, "What about Saturday Flight Fever: Murder at the Dis-Crow."
"Is it too late to change my RSVP to maybe?"
THE NIGHT of Freddie's birthday party finally came and Alexa decided to dress up as Farrah Fawcett aka the one who made the hairspray that was on Stranger Things.
The last person to enter Spencer's apartment before Freddie was Pearl who claimed to be dressed as Richard Nixon.
"Freddie love Nixon."
"Cynthia Nixon." Alexa smiled, "You know, from Little Darlings and Sex and the City."
"It's that weird." Spencer quipped, "He's such a Charlotte."
Pearl sighed and glanced over at Alexa, "What's wrong?"
"He's terrified of Richard Nixon."
"What do you mean?"
"He got locked in the gift shop with all the masks at the presidential library. It was a whole thing. A funny thing, but a thing nonetheless."
"Oh, God. What do I do?"
"Maybe say you're Cynthia Nixon's dad?" Harper suggested.
"Well, I brought crow dip." Pearl said, "And before you ask, no, there aren't crows in it."
Harper dipped a chip into the dip and quickly spit it out.
"Are there rats?" She asked, "Because it taste like what I think rats would taste like."
Soon, Freddie entered the apartment dressed as Sonny Bono.
"You guys look amazing." He smiled.
His eyes finally landed on Pearl and he let out a gut wrenching scream.
"Please tell me you're Cynthia Nixon's dad."
As buckling down, Pearl switched costumes with Carly and now the group had been waiting for the rest of the party attendees to come.
But they weren't.
"Freddie said he didn't want to make a big deal of it. That he didn't need all the attention."
"He says that every year." Alexa said.
"It makes him feel humble." Carly added.
Freddie soon entered the room with a smile, "Hey, uh, so when's everybody else getting here?"
"Never." Pearl answered, "I'm sorry, I didn't—"
"She knew that you wanted an intimate get together." Alexa smiled, "Great job, Pearl."
"Wait. So Ronald isn't coming?" Spencer asked, "No!"
Another hour or so had passed and the murder mystery game had finally begun.
"It's 1977." Carly read, "The streets are full of trash and the people ain't much cleaner. We find ourselves at a grimy discotheque called Studio 55. Police arrive to discover there was a grisly murder. Now it's time to draw cards to find out which characters we all play."
One by one each of them picked one of the cards.
"Let's see. I'm... the detective, Sergeant Bellbottoms, whose brother is the victim." Freddie gasped, "Well, I'm going to find out which one of you sick freaks did this to my brother... Elton Don."
Alexa flipped her card over, "I'm the detective's wife."
"Perfect." Pearl sighed.
Alexa continued, "Your soulmate chemistry with your husband cannot be denied. Note: You and your husband could never be mistaken for friends." She smiled, "Do you want to switch, Pearl?"
"It's fine."
"Are you sure? We can switch. It's not a big deal."
"I can't switch because I'm the murderer!"
As soon as the words left her mouth the others groaned and just like that the game was over and apparently so was the party.
"You think a murder mystery party is all about the murder mystery?" Carly asked.
"Right there in the name, Shay." Alexa sighed, sinking down into her seat.
"I'm sure Alexa and Pearl have so many more things planned."
"You do?" Freddie smiled.
They soon pulled out the cake, but since Harper and Freddie had been on a rush to meet their blind dates, they decided to rush the entire party so they could leave.
The cake didn't get very far as Carly tried to wrestle it out of Spencer's hands causing him to smash the cake into her face.
"Is there at least some pudding?" Freddie asked.
"I ate it." Pearl said.
Carly sent Ms. Benson and Millicent to make a new cake and they had been gone for a quiet awhile.
So long that Alexa sat down on the couch because they had been in a conga line for longer than a conga line should've been.
Pearl soon joined her side with a hefty sigh.
"Great party." Alexa spoke.
"I almost ruined my boyfriend's birthday. I didn't kill it. You did."
"Does that matter?" Alexa questioned, "Look, he's having a great time. No man she enjoy dancing by themselves in the way he does."
"This whole night was about showing how well I know my boyfriend, except it wasn't, 'cause I don't." Pearl said, "You knew he liked all this stuff, not me. You probably even know he wouldn't like the crow dip."
"No one liked the crow dip, but who could've predicted that."
"Alexa, this is your party. You set everything up, paid for everything. I just... I need some air. Will you cover for me?"
"Sure."
The two of them stood from the couch and Alexa watched as Pearl left.
"Alexa, this party is so fun." Freddie smiled, continued to dance.
"Yep, Pearl really did hit the ball out of the park."
Freddie paused, "Where's Pearl? Did she leave? That would ruin everything. Don't tell me she left."
"Then I won't."
"So where is she?"
"I will tell you that she technically left." She smiled, "But it's only because we're shifting gears."
Alexa pulled on Carly's arm, dragging her towards Freddie and quickly explained that Pearl leaving would be some sort of game until she'd figure something out.
Alexa sat on the couch and watched as Carly went on to explain the game of "The Missing Pearl".
"You know. This is starting to feel like hide-n-seek."
At this point, there was no denying that Pearl had officially up and left. Alexa had finally confessed to watching Pearl leave and it was only because Carly couldn't possibly continue trying to get Freddie to find clues that were never there.
"How could you let her leave?" He asked.
"It was never my responsibility to keep her here." Alexa answered, "I can't do everything."
"What are you talking about?"
She explained how Pearl wanted to throw a wet crow party instead of the current one.
"You would've that party and I everything to make you happy."
"I appreciate that, Alexa, but it's not fair. Pearl is never going to know me as well as you do."
And like that Pearl had entered the room. She agreed to Freddie statement with a sigh.
"... Because you and Alexa are clearly in love with each other."
No one said anything and Millicent and Ms. Benson entered the room holding the new birthday cake for Freddie.
Pearl left and the lingering awkwardness stood heavily.
Maybe it was time to start a new era.
