Chapter 26: Quintuple Chaos - The Babies Are Coming!
It was the dead of night, the kind of peaceful quiet that made you forget about everything. That was until Futaro was ripped out of sleep by a sharp jab in his side.
“Futaro!” Nino hissed from her spot in their enormous shared bed, her hand clutching her stomach. “Wake up!”
Still groggy, he blinked, confused. “Huh? What’s wrong?”
“Something's wrong... I think the baby’s coming,” Nino said calmly, her voice steady despite the tension in her words.
Futaro sat up so fast he nearly fell off the edge of the bed. “W-Wait! Coming? As in… now?!”
Before Nino could reply, Ichika, lying on the other side of him, placed a hand on her own belly and spoke up, her voice surprisingly serene. “Actually, I think mine might be coming too.”
Futaro’s eyes widened, his heart racing as he whipped his head toward Ichika. “Y-You too?!”
As if on cue, Miku stirred next to Ichika, her face scrunching slightly before she sighed. “Same here,” she mumbled sleepily, as if this was the most normal thing in the world.
From the foot of the bed, Yotsuba, who had already been propped up on some pillows, casually glanced down at her stomach. “Oh yeah, my contractions just started,” she said with a grin, as if she were talking about the weather.
Itsuki, the last to stir, opened her eyes and checked her phone. “I just timed them,” she said, yawning. “They’re about five minutes apart now.”
Futaro was already out of bed, pacing around like a madman. “What do we do? What do we do?! They’re all coming! All at once!” His voice hit a higher pitch with every word as he scanned the room frantically. “Should I call the hospital? Pack the bags? What if we don’t make it in time?”
Meanwhile, the five girls exchanged calm glances, clearly unfazed by Futaro’s meltdown.
“You should probably start by calling the hospital,” Ichika said, her tone composed and soothing. “But don’t forget to breathe, Futaro.”
“Breathe?!” Futaro exclaimed, practically hyperventilating as he ran around the room. “How can I breathe? You’re all going into labor at the same time! This is a disaster! We need the hospital! We need... we need—"
“Calm down, Futaro,” Nino said, grabbing his hand mid-rant. She looked up at him with an amused smile, despite the contractions. “We’re fine. You’re the one freaking out.”
“But—” he started, before Miku cut in.
“Futaro, relax,” she said, her hand resting gently on her belly as she leaned against the headboard. “You’re not the one having the babies.”
That did nothing to soothe him.
“HOW ARE YOU ALL SO CALM?!” he shouted, running his hands through his hair in pure panic.
“We prepared for this,” Itsuki pointed out casually. “You’re the only one losing it.”
Yotsuba chimed in, barely wincing as another contraction hit. “Yeah, this is nothing! I’ll be fine as long as we get to the hospital soon.”
“Soon?! We should be there already!” Futaro yelled, rushing to grab the hospital bags. He tossed items into them without checking twice, fumbling with zippers as the chaos in his mind grew. “What if we don’t make it in time? What if—”
“Futaro,” Ichika’s soft voice interrupted him. She smiled gently, taking his hand. “We’re not going to give birth in the car. But you might faint if you keep this up.”
He gulped, his breath catching. “F-Faint?”
Nino smirked. “Honestly, if anyone's going to pass out, it’ll be you, not us.”
Miku stifled a laugh. “Focus, Futaro. Grab the bags and get the car.”
---
After what felt like hours (but was really just minutes), Futaro finally gathered the bags, called the hospital, and rushed to the car. His mind was still buzzing with panic as he helped each of the girls into the vehicle, frantically double-checking that they were all buckled in.
“Are we good? Do you have everything? Is there anything we’re missing?” he asked for the fiftieth time as he hopped into the driver’s seat.
“We’re fine,” Ichika reassured him, smoothing a hand over her belly. “Just drive.”
Futaro’s heart pounded as he sped off toward the hospital, his knuckles white on the steering wheel. The girls, meanwhile, remained unbothered in the backseat, chatting among themselves between contractions.
“I think I want a smoothie after this,” Yotsuba mused, her voice calm despite her contractions.
“I’m craving pancakes,” Miku added.
Nino rolled her eyes, smirking. “Can you guys focus? We’re about to give birth, and all you’re thinking about is food?”
Ichika shrugged. “At least we’re not panicking like someone.” She shot a teasing glance at Futaro, who was visibly sweating.
He groaned, trying to concentrate on the road. “How are you all so calm?!”
“We’ve been ready for this for months, Futaro,” Itsuki said, leaning back in her seat with a contented smile. “We trust you.”
Futaro gulped. “Trust me? But I—"
“You’ll be fine,” Miku reassured him softly. “Just breathe.”
---
The hospital was prepared by the time they arrived, thanks to Itsuki’s earlier call. Nurses greeted them with wide eyes as they helped the quintuple mothers inside, all still unusually composed despite their advancing labor.
“You’ve got five in labor?” a nurse asked Futaro, who was practically vibrating with nerves.
“Yes! All five! Right now!” he blurted, his voice an octave higher than normal.
The nurse blinked at him, glancing at the girls who were handling their labor far better than their husband. “You might want to sit down. You look like you’re about to pass out.”
“I-I’m fine!” he lied, following them into the delivery area.
---
Each wife was taken to their own room, but they remained close enough that Futaro could run between them. He sprinted back and forth, checking on each girl like a chicken with its head cut off.
“I’m here!” he announced breathlessly as he arrived at Nino’s side. “How are you feeling?”
“Better than you,” Nino teased, though her breathing grew heavier as another contraction hit. “You look like you’re going to faint.”
“I’m fine!” he insisted, though his pale face and trembling hands said otherwise.
After a few minutes with Nino, he dashed to Ichika’s room. “Ichika, I’m here! I—”
“You’re late,” she teased, her voice soft but playful. “But it’s okay. I’m doing great.”
He stared at her in awe. “You’re… so calm.”
“I told you, we’re ready,” she said, giving him a reassuring smile. “You’re the one who needs to relax.”
---
And so it went, Futaro running back and forth like a man on the verge of collapse, while each of the girls remained composed, smiling through the contractions and handling the situation with far more grace than their husband.
Hours passed in a blur of pain and panic for Futaro, and then the moment came. One by one, the girls began to deliver, their calm demeanor never wavering even as the sound of newborn cries filled the air.
First Nino, then Ichika, Miku, Yotsuba, and finally Itsuki, all delivered healthy, beautiful babies, while Futaro, exhausted and overwhelmed, barely held himself together.
When it was all over, he leaned against the wall in the hallway, wiping the sweat from his brow as he tried to catch his breath.
“You okay, Futaro?” Yotsuba asked with a grin, cradling her newborn son in her arms.
He gave her a shaky smile, his knees still weak. “I think I’m the one who needs a hospital bed…”
The girls all exchanged amused glances as they held their babies, looking far more composed than their frazzled husband.
“You did good, Futaro,” Nino teased, flashing him a proud smile. “But next time, try not to panic so much.”
Futaro chuckled, shaking his head. “Yeah… I’ll work on that.”
