Chapter 4
PERCY'S POV~
I stepped out of the cab and looked at the apartment complex that Kaneki supposedly lived in. It took me a moment to recognize it, being at Camp Half-Blood for so long, but I quickly realized it was where I used to live with my mom. How long has Kaneki been my mom's neighbor? Did she have any idea what Kaneki... was? I shook the thoughts from my head as I walked in to the building. Heading through the lobby to the stairway and going upstairs, I started down the grey hall and came to a stop at what I thought was Kaneki's door. Taking a breath, I bent down and retrieved the key from underneath the doormat. As I unlocked the door I heard a different one open up a few feet away.
"Kaneki? Oh, Percy! Why didn't you call and tell me you were coming back? Wait... Are you breaking in to Kaneki's apartment?" My mom, Sally Jackson, asked.
" What?? No! nI'm just here to pick up a few things for Kaneki, and then I'm heading back to camp." I explained.
My mom raised an eyebrow. "Kaneki's a halfblood?"
"Not really, but he'll be there for a while... Mom, can we talk?" I asked, feeling the need to tell her everything. When I asked to, she frowned.
"Of course. We can talk while you're getting Kaneki's things."
I nodded slightly and opened the door to the apartment, slipping inside. I glanced around and noted that the curtains were closed, leaving the entire front room cloaked in darkness. After a moment I glanced at my mom, who was studying a vase with multiple red flowers.
"These are... Red Spider Lilies... I didn't know we could get them here." She looked up at Percy. "They stand for loss of memory and abandonment. I have to say, I am curious as to what Kaneki has lost and what he has abandoned." She said in a soft voice."Percy, what exactly is going on?" My mom asked, watching me with her worried eyes.
I winced slightly then spoke. "At camp we had a prophecy about old enemies coming back and what is left of the seven heroes. We are going to be joined by two new people the prophecy told us of. We know Kaneki's one of them, that's why I'm here." I stiffened slightly when I noticed to tears streaking down my mother's face.
"God damn it." She choked out as she wiped at her red cheeks. "You just got back from the last one! Do these... Fates think of you as some plaything?? I don't want to be the one to bury you Percy! I don't want- I don't want you to die! I don't want to have to wait here anxiously anymore as you disappear for MONTHS- hell, YEARS, not knowing if you're alive or rotting in some foreign ditch!"
I went over to her and pulled her in to a warm embrace. "Don't worry, I'll be fine." I comforted here as she sobbed in to my shoulder. "I'll send a sign I'm alive, okay?" I smiled. She nodded and pulled back.
"You'd better. I'll see you when you come back. I love you." She said, wiping her tears and kissing my cheek before turning and leaving.
I stood there for a few seconds, before sighing and rubbing my face. I walked down a hall and started to search for Kaneki's room. After searching for a bit, I opened a door to see his bedroom.
The space was filled with dull, grey walls. His bed sat in one corner of the room, a dresser and a bookshelf filled to the brim with books in the other. "Very barren..." I murmured. I then walked to his closet and pulled the door open. Inside there were multiple black sweaters and a couple pairs of jeans. On the top shelf was a grey duffel bag. I reached up and grabbed it, throwing it on to the bed and unzipping it.
Inside was some kind of black clothing. I reached in and pulled it out, curious. It was a black battle suit with holes in its shoulders. It was made from an oddly flexible material. I frowned, studying the suit.
"What kind of life has he lived?" I wondered aloud then shook my head. I shoved the suit back in to the back and started to pull the rest of Kaneki's clothes from the closet. After I finished throwing them in to the bag, I headed out of the room and went to find the kitchen. Once I found it, I got a hold of a portable cooler. I glanced at the freezer and went to it, hesitating. What exactly did Kaneki have in here? I already knew the answer. I shook my head then gathered my courage, swinging the freezer door open. I was greeted with the stench of blood and raw meat. Inside the freezer were brown packages, tinted with red specks. I shivered in disgust before starting to grab the packages and place them in to the cooler. When I finished I gathered the bag, rushing out the door with one thought in mind.
I won't be returning here for a while.
(???)
I watched from a distance as the tan, dark haired boy walked out of Kaneki's apartment. Why was he in his apartment? I affixed my rabbit mask to my face, flipping my hood up and then standing. He'll lead me to Kaneki and I'll bring him home. With that thought I stood then jumped off the building, disappearing into the night.
~Percy POV~
I stepped out of the cab once it had pulled up to a stop in front of the woods where camp was located. I grabbed Kaneki's belongings and watched as the cab took off. Walking in to the forest, I noticed scarcely visible footsteps behind me. I stopped walking, turning around.
"Who's there?" I called out, my voice ringing out through the woods. A couple feet away, leaves rustled and my head jerked in the direction of the noise. Placing my hand in my pocket and grabbing Riptide, I called out"I know you're there, so come out!"
I growled when suddenly a thunk sounded from behind me. I turned to see some kind of reddish blue crystal."Where is Kaneki?!" A feminine voice demanded from the other direction. I whipped out riptide and uncapped it to reveal the sword.
"First, who are you?" I asked as I looked around for the source of the voice. A small thump sounded from behind me again and I turned.
"I'm one of Kaneki's allies. Why were you in his apartment?" From the voice and figure I could tell the person was a girl. I cleared my throat and spoke.
"I was packing supplies for him."
"So you can take me to him?" The girl asked.
"Are you what he is?" I asked after a moment. The girl stayed silent, nodding. I sighed. "You can come with me, only if you tell me your real name." I watched as the girl struggled to decide whether or not to tell me. After a moment, the girl spoke.
"Touka..."
"What?"
The girl snorted at my response. "That is my name, and your name is?"
"My name is Percy Jackson, nice to meet you, Touka. I guess." I held out my hand for Touka to shake. She didn't take it. I sighed, then snapped my gaze up when she spoke.
"Just take me to Kaneki." She ordered, irritation in her voice.
"Follow me." I said, and with that I took her to Camp Halfblood.
