Chapter 3
~PERCY POV~ I blinked in confusion as I glanced from Chiron to a shocked Kaneki. Binge eater? Survivor? Who exactly is Kaneki? I shook my head as Kaneki spoke with a slight stutter.
"H-how do you know?!" Kaneki questioned.
Chiron chuckled softly in response. "I did my research when I found out a ghoul from Tokyo moved from Japan to New York."
Kaneki nodded slowly in slight shock. I watched, then spoke after a moment of silence.
"Chiron, what exactly is a ghoul?" I asked and Chiron ran a hand through his brown hair, thinking, then he spoke.
"A ghoul is a human from Japan who can't eat any normal human food... with the exception of coffee." Chiron started to explain, but I interrupted.
"If a ghoul can't eat human food, then what exactly do they eat?" I asked as I glanced back at Kaneki, who seemed to be staring down at his shoes as if they were the most interesting thing in the world.
"... They eat human flesh, Percy." Chiron sighed. My eyes widened, mostly in disturbance.
"So Kaneki is a cannibal?" I asked, my eyes shooting back to Kaneki to see him visibly cringe.
"That would imply that I am still human." He sighed, saddened."I don't eat people who are still alive. I feed off of people who have taken their own lives." Kaneki said.
I frowned. "So you disgrace the dead?" I snapped, and Hide spoke up.
"Better than harming the living." Hide said in Kaneki's defense and I hesitated before nodding in agreement.
"I guess you're right. I'm sorry, that crossed a line." I scratched the back of my head, then glanced back at Kaneki. "Is there any way around you eating people?"
Kaneki shook his head. "I'm already living on a bare minimum" At this, Hide shot a look at Kaneki, frowning in concern. "We ghouls don't really need to eat all that often, but starvation is a nasty thing. If I kept from eating, then I would eventually go insane and end up hurting people. My only wish is that you keep this a secret." he chuckled grimly. "I don't want any friends of yours attacking me in my sleep."
I looked at Chiron who had nodded; I did the same."Of course... Just don't harm anyone."
"Thank you..." Kaneki said as Chiron spoke up.
"Due to the fact you are a ghoul, you'll have to stay here so you won't pose threat to any other campers. Understood?" Chiron ordered.
"Understood, sir." Kaneki nodded.
"Chiron, sir, if I may ask, can I stay here tonight with Kaneki?" Hide asked and Chiron shook his head.
"You will sleep in your cabin once you have been claimed tonight, young Hide. It is disrespectful to sleep elsewhere."
Hide nodded sadly but then grinned, turning to Kaneki. "Why don't I show you around camp, Kaneki? I mean, you will be here for a while, so you should get to know the place." He wrapped an arm around Kaneki's shoulders as he spoke, leading him to the door. Kaneki struggled a bit, but I could see him smiling; however faint that smile may be.
I watched for a moment. "Kaneki... do you have any food at your home?" I asked, biting my lip gently.
Kaneki turned slightly, then nodded."What's your address?" I asked.
"North Star apartments, apartment 112." Kaneki said, then added; "The key is under the doormat."
My eyes widened. "Okay. Chiron, I'll be back in a while." I said before heading to the door that lead back to the forest.
"Be careful, Percy." Hide said as he lead Kaneki out the door and in to camp. I watched for a moment and then asked randomly, "Survivor of the binge eaters?" Chiron only shook his head. "Only time will tell that story." He said, and with that I turned and left to go off to Kanekis apartment.
~KANEKI POV~
As Hide lead me out in to a yard, my eyes darted around to take in the area. Greek architecture covered the space, cabins crowding around the field, each one amazing and unique. My jaw dropped in awe and I heard Hide chuckle. "Sweet, isn't it?"
I nodded as my eyes landed on a wall people were climbing on, lava chasing after them. "Isn't that lava?" I asked.
Hide nodded with a grin. "I'll have to race you up that wall someday when I have more practice.
Maybe then I can beat you, even with your strength." He playfully boasted.
I chuckled. "Maybe. But don't get too hopeful just yet." I joked.
Hide laughed, his voice seemingly lighting up my whole world."Hey Hide... I'm glad you're not dead." I said.
Hide offered a grin. "And I'm glad that you're alive as well." Hide said when suddenly a girl with with light blonde hair and fierce grey eyes appeared before us.
"Hide, why's the mortal here?" She asked.
Hide rubbed the back of his head nervously. "Annabeth, this is Kaneki. Kaneki, this is Annabeth."
He introduced us. I held my hand out, but Annabeth didn't take it.
"Why is he here?"the girl called Annabeth snapped.
"Well, why shouldn't he be here? He's a new camper." Hide stated.
Annabeth raised an eyebrow. "Really, then who is his godly parent?" She asked. I blinked, puzzled. Godly parent? What did she mean by that? Noticing my confusion, Annabeth sighed.
"Your godly parent is usually the parent who is just, gone. Like, dead gone." Annabeth explained. I nodded, then glanced at Hide who copied me.
"My dad probably, my mother said he died when I was a baby." I said with a shrug.
Annabeth nodded slightly. "Well, you should be claimed at dinner along with hide. So look forward to that." She said then turned and walked away. I winced slightly.
"Hey, Kaneki. I haven't really explained most things to you, have I?" Hide said.
"No, you haven't... but it's okay if you don't." I said with a small grin.
Hide shrugged. "You need to know what's going on." He said, taking a breath. "Well... you know Greek gods? They're real. They come down to earth every once in a while and have children with humans, and the children are referred to as Demigods, which is what I am." He gave a short explanation. I blinked then nodded slightly as he continued."You are here because the oracle gave a prophecy of great enemies coming back to start a war."
I frowned. "Doesn't explain why I'm here."
"You're here because the oracle also said that two new heroes will rise, one of the sun, and the other a 'monster made'. Kaneki, I think you were the second hero." Hide eyed me carefully.
"So, I'm supposed to go in to a war that isn't even mine?" I asked, sadness filling my eye. "I don't want to see more death in the battlefield, Hide. I-" I took a shuddering breath. "I can't."
Hide drew me into a warm hug. "Kaneki, we need your help. If we lose this war then no one will live to see another day. Not the humans, not the gods, the ghouls, not me. So please, just fight once more. Please." He said, pulling away from the hug, leaving me cold.
After a moment's hesitation, I spoke in a soft voice. "I'll fight on one condition,"
"And what condition is that?"
"Stay alive, Hide. Promise."
"I promise."
