Chapter 8: Ruff Around the Edges
Fishlegs fidgeted nervously while walking with his group. He wanted to talk to Iseabail DingWall, but he was never good with girls. Sure, he and Heather dated for a while but she had wanted it to be a secret. Then they ended it after a while.
The most recent girl he'd had a crush on was Ruffnut, but she was never interested. Iseabail must have sensed his hesitance, because she decided to take the initiative.
"The Princess told me you were an expert dragon classifier, is that true?" she asked in her quiet, melodious voice.
"Y-yes, that's true," Fishlegs replied.
"Why don't you tell me about them?" she suggested.
"I'd love too," Fishlegs replied enthusiastically.
~Later~
"And then there's the hideous zippleback which is a dragon with two heads. One of them burps a gas while the other ignites it to create fire," Fishlegs rambled while walking with Iseabail.
She remained quiet but hung on to every word he said.
Ruffnut and Boyd Dingwall led the way while the other two followed. Boyd kept trying to make a conversation with Ruffnut but she was too preoccupied looking at all the muscular young Scots.
"Lady Ruffnut, is there something ye want to do?" Wee DingWall asked.
"Lady?" Ruffnut laughed at the title and punched his arm.
She couldn't remember the last time she acted lady-like.
"Yeah, umm, what's your name again?" Ruffnut asked him.
"Boyd DingWall, but everyone calls me Wee DingWall," he replied.
Ruffnut wanted to laugh but contained herself, "Okay Wee DingWall, let's go watch them wrestle!"
She ran off to an event nearby where two young men were currently fighting. Boyd followed close behind while his sister and Fishlegs conversed.
"My dragon is a Gronckle, which is- Oh, sorry, I haven't let you speak," Fishlegs stopped and apologized.
"No, no it's fine. I'm a good listener, besides, I enjoy hearing you speak about the subject with such passion," she replied.
"Isn't there anything you'd like to talk about? I'd be happy to listen," Fishlegs asked her.
"Ye want to listen to... me?" she asked.
"Of course, why wouldn't I?" he asked.
"Well, to be completely truthful with ye, my sister Catriona is the one who speaks. I listen and follow," Iseabail explained.
"Well, your sister isn't here and I'd like to hear you speak," he told her.
"I don't know what to talk about," she admitted.
"Your sister said you two like to sing, is that true?" he asked.
"Well, yes and no. I do enjoy singing, but I've only ever sang the melody for my sister," she replied.
"Why don't you sing a song? One that you like," he suggested.
"A naoidhean bhig, cluinn mo ghuth/
Mise ri d' thaobh, Ó mhaighdean bhàn/
Ar rìbhinn òg, fàs a's faic/
Do thìr, dìleas fhéin."
She started off unsure of herself, but slowly gained more volume without missing a key.
She stopped when she noticed Fishleg's wide eyes.
She refused to look at him and nervously said," I know, I'm not as good as my sister."
"What are you talking about? That was great! You have a beautiful singing voice," Fishlegs praised her.
"Thank ye," she finally looked at him and replied.
Iseabail looked forward and her smile faltered. She grabbed the bottom of her skirt and picked it up. She quickly ran to an event in front of them with a large crowd surrounding it.
"Hey, what's wrong?" Fishlegs asked as he followed her.
"Boyd, my brother, is about to wrestle," she replied.
She tried to get closer, but she kept getting pushed back. Fishlegs decided to help and made a way for her to pass through. She curtisied as a thanks then walked through. They made it to the front and noticed Ruffnut was watching with amusement.
"Ruffnut, what's going on?" Fishlegs asked.
"We were watching two guys wrestling and next thing I know, he's up there," Ruffnut answered.
"I'm afraid of the outcome," Iseabail quietly said.
"I'm sure your brother will be fine, don't they get trained for this stuff?" Fishlegs asked.
Iseabail shook her head and explained, "I'm afraid for his opponent. Boyd has special ways of fighting. He'll fight normally as long as no one says-"
"Go Wee DingWall!" Ruffnut cheered once the bell rang.
The very moment she said that Boyd's gaze locked on his opponent and he tackled them to the ground. Iseabail covered her eyes but peeked a bit in between her fingers. Fishlegs felted intimidated once he saw the innocent-looking young man practically demolish his foe.
Ruffnut on the other hand laughed the entire time.
~~With another group~~
"I can't believe how many events there are to do here," Eret commented.
He, Astrid, Catriona DingWall, and Kirsteen MacIntosh had already tried out a multitude of events. As in he and Astrid were the only ones. Catriona and Kirsteen would just watch and explain how each event worked or how it was done.
"General Astrid? May I have a word with ye?" Kirsteen asked.
"Sure," Astrid replied and stopped walking.
"I wanted to inquire you about Eret's origins. I noticed he talks different from ye or the rest," Kirsteen commented.
"Oh, well, we've only known him for about a year. He's not from Berk, but we took him in after showing him that dragons weren't bad. Why are you asking?" Astrid replied.
"No reason, just curious," Kirsteen replied and glanced at him.
He and Catriona seemed to be having a relatively friendly conversation.
"Don't tell me you like him?" Astrid asked with a smirk.
"No, I just want to get to know him. I should have already been married off, but thanks to the Princess I didn't have to be," Kirsteen replied.
"The Princess is really nice, huh?" Astrid asked hesitantly.
Maybe she should give Merida a chance?
"Yes, although she went about it the wrong way at first, it is thanks to her that we have the choice to choose whom we marry," Kirsteen told her.
"Hey, why didn't you ask Eret instead of me?" Astrid questioned Kirsteen.
"I'm not good with men, the only thing I could possibly mess up more on is playing instruments," Kirsteen admitted.
A few yards away, Catriona seemed to be having an okay time just walking around and observing. Many young men turned and smirked at her, but didn't approach her, most likely because she was walking with Eret. She was used to being thought of as a prize, but, although she didn't particularly like it, she knew that it was just how everyone thought it should be.
Eret had just commented something about there being many events when she noticed a frustrated Snotlout by an activity.
"What is wrong with him?" Catriona asked Eret.
"A lot of things, but I wouldn't worry about him too much. He likes to show off and often becomes frustrated when he messes up," Eret answered.
"Please, excuse me," Catriona told him and walked over to where Snotlout was.
"Is something the matter?" she asked him.
"You don't have to talk to me out of pity," he told her in a deflated tone.
"Pity? Why would I pity a mighty viking like ye'rself? I saw how far ye threw the caber, unfortunately that's not how ye win," she told him.
"It's not?" he asked.
"No, but I'll tell ye on one condition," Catriona told him.
Astrid watched Catriona walk away from Eret when she got an idea. She lightly pushed Kirsteen next to Eret before backing away.
"Eret, I need to go find Hiccup. Please keep Kirsteen company," she told him before running off.
She would apologize to Kirsteen later, but first she needed to find Hiccup's group. She was headed toward the stable's direction, knowing that he would be there to get Toothless, and if he wasn't she could just use Stormfly to track him down. On her way, however, she noticed a pile of unruly red curls.
"Ryan, couldn't ye wait until after we went fer the dragons?" Merida asked him.
When Astrid got closer she saw that Young MacIntosh was in a ring-- sword fighting with another young man. Astrid was slightly impressed until both of them knocked each other's swords away. Ryan, in a panic, started to just slap the other person's hands every time he tried to hit him.
"You can do better than that!" Astrid exclaimed as she walked closer.
"Astrid, what are you doing here?" Hiccup asked pleasantly surprised.
"I came looking for you. I was wondering if we could get our dragons, but it looks like someone needs my help," she replied.
She gave Hiccup a kiss on the cheek before stepping into the ring.
"You can go," she told Ryan's opponent and then faced him.
She got into a fighting stance, waiting for Young MacIntosh to follow. After a few seconds, he caught on and copied her pose.
"I'm here too," Merida mumbled.
Hiccup heard her and chuckled slightly earning him a slight shove.
