Chapter 5: Slowly but Surely
"The Lords! How could I have forgotten? I'm sorry darling. I guess my memory isn't how it used to be," Queen Elinor apologized to her daughter.
"It's alright Mum, I handled it. They should be coming in at any minute," Merida reassured her and as if on cue the door flung open and in came the Lords with their clans behind them. Merida quickly sat down, as did her brothers who came in late. They had probably set up another trap for their father.
"Ah, your Majesty," Lord MacIntosh greeted and bowed.
"We are honored to be invited to this occasion," Lord Dingwall added.
"The honor is all ours. Now, where are your children? Lord MacIntosh?" the Queen asked.
"I present to you, my children. Ryan is my heir and oldest son, my next oldest is my lovely daughter Kirsteen, my next son is Labhrainn, but seeing as he is currently courting he decided to stay behind with my wife. My two youngest are Graeme and Lillias," Lord MacIntosh proudly presented each child.
As per usual Ryan did his whole sword act and flexed, this time however it was directed at Astrid rather than Merida. Kirsteen, who had long, black, curly hair and a slender face with dark blue eyes, awkwardly curtsied, obviously not liking all the attention on her. Graeme was a slight bit taller than Lillias and although they both had unruly hair, Lillias' was dark brown and a slight bit tamer. Lillias had brown eyes like Graeme and radiated kindness with slight mischief. Merida took a mental note to watch her around the triplets and the twins, who knows what would happen if they all gathered?
"It's lovely to meet you all. Lord MacGuffin?" Fergus asked.
"You've already met my eldest son Callum," Lord MacGuffin told them and placed a hand on Young MacGuffin's back, he seemed to have grown a bit more, if that were even possible," my next oldest is Aodhán but because he is courting he saw no need to come. This is my only daughter Aileas."
Aileas looked so small compared to her brother but carried herself with more confidence than Callum. She, unlike her father and brother, had strawberry blonde hair with a slightly more square face. Her demeanor gave off a cold and disciplined vibe. Merida was going to have to show her how to have fun. Last but not least were Lord Dingwall's children.
"As your Majesties know, I have only one son, Boyd," Lord Dingwall reminded and pointed to his son.
He seemed to have changed the most out of all the Young Lords. He was about a foot and a half taller with a more muscular build, but he still kept his distant eyes and pointy nose. Lord Dingwall then proceeded to point towards two old looking women.
"These are my twin daughters Catriona and Iseabail who, as you can see, are as beautiful as my late wife," Lord Dingwall told everyone sadly.
Someone would have said something, but they didn't want to ruin his moment.
"I know, their beauty radiates as much as the warmth of their hearts," he turned to look at them and facepalmed.
He told the two women to move away and behind them were two beautiful young women. Everyone gasped in surprise that they were actually his daughters, even if it did sound a bit mean. They were almost identical, except that Catriona was an inch taller than Iseabail and Catriona had light blonde hair why Iseabail had a dirty blonde hair color.
"Very well, tonight we shall have a feast to let our children get to meet one another and celebrate the first annual festival," Queen Elinor declared.
Everyone cheered and went to set up camp. A while later, the Vikings were walking to the dining room since the food was almost ready.
"That was the most amount of people our age I've ever seen," Fishlegs whistled. Just as he said that Merida came along.
"Really? Well, I can't judge, I've never actually been around other people my age, besides the Young Lords," Merida told them.
"Well with the island being dragon-infested, the grown-ups really didn't think that having children would be a good idea. Now though, there are a lot more women getting pregnant," Hiccup informed her.
"What about you guys? Do you plan on getting married and having children?" Merida asked them as they continued walking.
"Well, it depends on if anyone wants to have children with me," Fishlegs sheepishly replied. Heather looked at him then lowered her gaze.
"Aww, wee lamb. I'm sure there's already a girl who wants to be with ye, she's just scared to admit it," Merida assured him. Fishlegs smiled feeling more confident.
"Children are cute and all, but I'm not very good mother material. If we did it'll probably only be one," Astrid admitted.
"I'm sure ye'll be a great mum," Merida encouraged her. Astrid was slightly taken back but managed to murmur a small "Thanks".
"Well, we never really talked about it, but I was hoping we could have children. Maybe 3 so that they wouldn't feel lonely," Hiccup replied.
Their point of view was different, but Hiccup knew they could get over it.
"I want to have kids, then we can train them to play pranks on other people," Tuffnut mischievously replied.
"I want to have a lot of mini Snotlout's running around. They'll be the best and most handsome Vikings of all time," Snotlout proudly answered.
They had to cut their conversation short because they made it to the dining room. There were three large tables and one small one set out. The first was for the lords and their children, the second was for the Lords' people, the third was for the Vikings, and the last one was for the younger kids.
"I wonder who decided on this," Merida murmured.
She was supposed to sit with her parents, but it made her blood boil to think that they wanted to separate Hiccup's tribe from everyone else. She marched towards the Vikings' table and sat down. Fergus, Valka, and Elinor arrived and were confused.
"Who changed the seating arrangements?" King Fergus asked in a slightly loud tone.
The room was filled with silence, and, of course, no one owned up. Queen Elinor walked over to the table the Lords sat in and politely asked their children to sit down at the Viking table. No one wanted to defy the queen so they agreed and got up. Queen Elinor smiled and beckoned Valka over. Valka laughed and sat down at the table with the Lords, Elinor, and Fergus.
The Scottish teens walked over to the table sheepishly, save for Young MacIntosh who immediately sat down near Astrid. Everyone else, for the most part, was still separated by Scots and Vikings save for Merida who sat by Hiccup.
"So, what do ye all like?" Merida asked, trying to break the silence.
"I enjoy painting," Wee Dingwall replied.
"I like dancing," Kirsteen joined in.
"We like singing," Catriona said and Iseabail nodded in agreement.
"I enjoy sword fighting," Young MacIntosh declared and flexed his arms.
"What a coincidence, I do too," Snotlout replied and flexed his arms.
Pretty soon it became a flexing contest which ended in Eret winning.
"What about ye MacGuffins?" Merida asked.
"Ah lik' sports lik' caber throwing," Young MacGuffin replied.
(I know it's not Doric, please pretend.) Everyone looked at each other confused.
"He says he likes caber throwing," his sister Aileas replied with slight frustration.
"Oh, well I guess I should have known that," Merida replied.
"Why does he speak weird?" Tuffnut asked her.
"Our mother is Dorian, so he picked it up," Aileas replied with more frustration.
"Then why don't you talk like that?" he pressed on.
"Look, Viking, dragon rider, King of England! I don't care who you are, I will not tolerate my family being made fun of," she told him and tried getting up but Callum held her down.
He told her something that calmed her down. She furrowed her eyebrows and pouted a bit before sighing.
"I'm sorry for my outburst. I realize that we have different customs and I should be more considerate," she apologized.
"Uhh, no problem Princess," Tuffnut accepted her apology rather awkwardly.
"Oh, I'm not a princess, I am a Lady," she replied.
"There really isn't much of a difference, it's just a title like any other," Merida added.
"Just a title? I suppose General is just a title for you nobles, huh?" Astrid asked.
"She didn't mean it like that," Hiccup tried to defend her.
"I worked hard to become General. I don't think that it's just a title, but then again I wasn't handed everything on a silver platter," Astrid told Merida.
"Yes, you earned it. However, we got our titles by birth and have responsibilities based on that. We do not choose what family we are born into, and I can assure you, we work hard to uphold those responsibilities" Catriona replied.
"I'd have to agree with her Astrid. I may have been born the Chief's nephew and now cousin, but I work hard to live up to those expectations," Snotlout replied.
"I agree. It's not easy," Wee DingWall agreed.
The rest of dinner consisted of everyone talking about whether it was harder to be born into a title or to earn it. By the end of the discussion, everyone agreed that they both had their ups and downs. Then they continued to talk about each other and exchanged stories. Some were small things like when Young MacGuffin accidently breaking his mother's harp when he was 5. Others went on to last half an hour like how the whole Dragon Riding Games began. It was safe to say that the wall between Vikings and Scots had started to crumble. Slowly, but surely.
