Chapter 3: A Long Awaited Reunion

"Alright everyone, so apparently you came just in time. My mum will be hosting a sort of convention where young people our age will come and have fun the day after tomorrow, although I don't know for how long" Merida explained.

"Oh really? And why's that?" Valka asked.

"Well, a few years back it was decided that the children of the Lords and the King and Queen would decide whom to marry instead of them all having to fight for my hand or have their parents choose," Merida answered.

"And did you know about this before inviting us?" Astrid asked.

"No, I didn't. She told me the day we got your reply," Merida replied. "Why do you ask?"

"No reason," Astrid crossed her arms and shook her head. Hiccup noticed something was off and walked a bit slower to join Astrid's side.

"Hey, are you okay? You seem..." Hiccup struggled to find the right words.

"I seem what?" Astrid asked.

"Like your old self, you know? Not easily impressed and a bit temperamental," Hiccup finished albeit cautiously.

"I'm not, I just don't trust her," Astrid admitted and glared at the back of Merida's head.

Just then Merida turned around and smiled at both of them. Astrid stopped glaring and waved back. Once Merida turned away her face returned to a scowl.

"Oh yeah, she's quite a menace," Hiccup sarcastically agreed.

"She seems stuck up," Astrid told him.

"Well, she can't be stuck up if she was my friend back then," Hiccup reasoned.

"Or she was just using you, you said so yourself, you don't even remember her," Astrid argued.

"Be that as it may, what are you trying to say? Without Toothless no one could like hanging around the talking fishbone?" Hiccup asked her slightly hurt at her accusation.

"What? No, I didn't mean it like that," Astrid tried to apologize.

"No, no it's alright. I'll be on guard if that's what you want," Hiccup interrupted and walked ahead until he was in the middle of the group. Once they made it to the inside of the castle Merida beckoned them into the throne room.

"Alright, everyone. My parents are right outside in the stables. You should all stand looking towards the door with the Hairy Hooligan tribe flag. Valka, if you please, could you stay behind everyone and once my parents come in everyone moves out of the way so that my mum can see you?" Merida asked.

"Of course, Princess," Valka replied. Merida blushed slightly from embarrassment.

"Please, just call me Merida," Merida replied. She heard footsteps outside and quickly got everyone ready.

"Fergus, what is this?" Elinor laughed while blindly walking forward because of Fergus' hands covering her eyes.

"Surprise!" Merida and Fergus exclaimed once Fergus let Elinor see. Elinor gasped and looked from the group to the flag and finally to Hiccup.

"Hiccup? My, how you've grown," Elinor whispered and walked closer to him.

"You remind me of your mother," she told him and smiled.

"Funny, you should say that," Hiccup replied and moved out of the way. Valka stood behind him, smiling at her old friend.

"Valka? But I thought," Elinor covered her mouth and cried from joy before running to her best friend and hugging her.

"What about Stoick? Where is he?" Elinor asked and looked around. Everyone looked to the ground but remained quiet.

"I know, we've got a lot to talk about," Valka replied and cried as well.

"I'm sorry," Elinor apologized. "We should have a feast in your honor! Welcome to DunBroch, vikings of Berk," Elinor greeted everyone.

"Aye! Everyone, to the great hall!" Fergus exclaimed trying to break the ice. Everyone shook off the negativity and cheered.

"Hiccup, wait," Merida called as Hiccup was following the rest of the group.

"Yes?" Hiccup asked and let everyone else go ahead.

"Why don't we hang out? Like old times?" Merida asked him.

"Well, Princess-,"

"Merida, I never liked it when you called me Princess. You always seemed to be putting yourself down when you said it," Merida intervened.

Hiccup smiled, touched that she cared, but continued, "I'm going to be honest with you. I don't really remember what we used to do together." He scratched the back of his head.

"That's fine. We can make new memories. Besides we have old portraits, and sketches of the two of us that are sure to make you remember. If you want to?" Merida asked.

Hiccup thought about it for a bit before smiling and nodding. Merida smiled back.

"Let's go to the library and I can show them to ye," Merida told him.

She grabbed his hand and ran with him to the library. Astrid watched them from the door but shook her head, she knew Hiccup wouldn't cheat on her. He knew better than that.

"See here?" Merida asked and showed him a sketch of Hiccup and Merida as toddlers. They were both sleeping on the floor with drawings scattered around them.

"Do you remember this?" Merida asked.

"Not really. I remember that we were drawing, but nothing more," Hiccup told her while examining the picture.

"We were drawing invitations," Merida told him.

"Invitations? Invitations for what?" Hiccup asked.

"Our wedding. I know, embarrassing right?" Merida laughed and slightly scratched her cheek. "We were looking at the tapestry my parents had of their wedding. You said that you didn't have any pictures of your family's wedding so I said that I would marry you. Just thinking about it is embarrassing."

"Really? Well, I guess we were just little kids," Hiccup laughed.

"Let's move to the next one. Oh! Look at this one," Merida said and pointed to another one. This one was of them when they were 5 and 6. Hiccup had an apple on his head and Merida was pointing an arrow at him, albeit it looked like she was struggling.

"Were you trying to kill me? How did we go from wanting to get married to you wanting to murder me?" Hiccup asked while laughing.

"No!" Merida laughed," I was just trying to learn how to do tricks on my bow."

"Hey, what about this one?" Hiccup asked. He grabbed a picture of them holding a net and looking into a hole in the ground.

"Ah, that was one time we went troll hunting," Merida remembered.

"Hey, I think I remember a bit of this. Didn't I fall inside and came out looking like a monster?" Hiccup asked.

"Oh yeah! Haha, you scared me so bad I grabbed the net and waked you with it," Merida added.

"Who even took these sketches?" Hiccup asked her curiously.

" The babysitter my parents hired to take care of us while they were busy. She happened to be a great artist, but she had no control over us, so instead of helping us she just documented the events," Merida reminded him.

"What did your parents say?" he asked.

"Mum was furious, but Da found it hilarious, so they just gave her another job in the castle," they both laughed lightly when they heard someone clearing their throat.

"It's nice to see that you two are having fun," Elinor told them and smiled.

"Oh, hi, Mum," Merida greeted.

"Hello, Your Majesty," Hiccup greeted as well.

"You two should come on down, your father finished telling his Mor'du story and is going to tell yours next," Elinor told them.

"Great! Come on Hiccup," Merida urged him and helped him up.

Once they made it to the dining area they headed towards a space left for two people. However, Astrid moved from her seat to there and pulled Hiccup over. Merida then sat in Astrid's old seat at the end of the table beside Snotlout and Ruffnut.

"Hellooo, Princess," Snotlout leaned closer and smiled. "I'm Snotlout."

"Merida, and I'm going to go ahead and warn ye, I'm not a normal princess. I'm not afraid to fight ye. I'll have ye know, I'm the best archer in the land, and I never miss," Merida warned him.

Snotlout gulped and backed off causing Merida to smile in triumph.

"Alright everyone, calm down. I'm going to tell ye the story of how the Princess outwitted her parents and gained the right to choose whom she will marry," King Fergus announced.

"This sounds like it's going to be boring and political," Tuffnut groaned.

"That's where you're wrong," King Fergus replied.

He then went on to tell them about the fight for Merida's hand and how she shot 3 bullseyes and even went through another arrow. There were gasps of surprise and even some nods of approval, but as always some people didn't believe it.

"Nu-uh, there's no way you did that!" Tuffnut accused.

"I did too! Everyone at the event clearly saw it, you can ask around if you'd like. And if that's not enough for ye, I'll redo it," Merida replied.

"It's true, now as I was saying," King Fergus resumed. He told them about Merida running off, her encounter with the witch, Merida's epic speech, the epic battle between the Queen and Mor'du, and finally to the Queen's transformation back.

"Wow, it seems like Scottish women are just as tough as Scottish men," Astrid commented.

"Naturally, and sorry if this is personal but how did you lose your leg?" Hamish asked Hiccup, startling his family.

"Yeah, Hiccup, let's show them that Scots aren't the only ones who can have fun," Astrid nudged Hiccup and the rest of the Vikings agreed.

"If you want me to," Hiccup agreed and told his story. By the end of it, the Scots were all in awe.

"Haha! I think our kids are actually more troublemakers than we were," Fergus laughed quite impressed with Hiccup's story.

"Now, don't be so modest. Remember everything you went through to be able to marry Elinor?" Valka asked him.

"What did you do? You don't usually talk about it," Merida asked excitedly.

"Your father and Stoick became friends when they were young. Stoick came with his father when the Vikings were trying to take over the highlands. Stoick was supposed to be a spy, but he became friends with Fergus when he took him into his home. Stoick saw that Scots weren't the bloodthirsty killers his father said they were and decided to go against his father's wishes," Valka told.

"One day, while the clans were meeting up, Fergus met Elinor and both were immediately smitten," this made both of them smile and hold hands," Around this time was the fight for Elinor's hand, so Stoick helped Fergus train for it. As you can see, it all paid off in the end. But there was still the matter of Stoick's father. Stoick was broken in two, having to choose between his tribe and his friend. Stoick warned Fergus, prompting him to unite the clans against the invasion. Stoick's father died in battle so Stoick took over as chief and retreated. The clans, in turn, made Fergus their king. Stoick was afraid that Fergus would think lowly of him so he left but soon received a letter from him asking why he had left his dear friend alone. Then we had Hiccup and I don't know anything about what happened after that."

"I guess not all old folk are useless," Snotlout applauded. Merida stepped on his foot causing him to yelp in pain.

"Not bad Princess," Astrid congratulated her.

"Just call me Merida," Merida replied.
