Chapter five

When they got back to Dean's apartment, Charlie helped him get a bag of ice.

"You good?" she asked.

"I'm fine," Dean said. She nodded and left. Dean sat next to Cas on the couch, resting his head on the back and pressing the ice to his nose.

"I'm really sorry, Dean," Cas apologized again.

"Don't be, Cas. It wasn't your fault. And it's just a bloody nose. I've had worse," Dean said. The pain began to fade and he took the ice off his nose.

"Okay. I'm gonna go change and then make us some food. Do you need anything?" he asked. Cas shook his head.

"No, I'm fine, Dean," he said. Dean nodded and started down the hall. He changed his clothes and washed his face, staring at his reflection in the mirror for a moment. He closed his eyes, thinking back on his conversations with Charlie.

"Dean, don't you dare."

"What are you talking about, Charlie?"

"I saw the way you just looked at him. You can't do that. He won't be staying forever, and he's not gay. You can't fall in love with him, it won't end well for either of you."

"I know, Charlie. I'm not in love with him. And even if I was, I know better than to act on it this time. I've learned my lesson."

"You know I didn't want to bring that up. I just don't want you to get hurt."

"I know. Someone just came in, I should go."

Dean closed his eyes for a second then headed back out to the living room.

"Okay, what do you want to eat, Cas?" he asked. Cas stood up.

"I can eat anything. Whatever you want is fine," he said. Dean nodded and headed into the kitchen. He evaluated what food he had, then grabbed a frozen pizza and stuck it in the oven.

"Okay. Pizza's in the oven," he said, walking back into the living room. Cas smiled.

"The frozen pizza?" he asked.

"Yeah, why?" Dean replied.

"I've never had a frozen pizza before. My mom always thought..." Cas trailed off. Dean watched him. This was the first time he'd mentioned his family. Or anything else about his life before Dean had found him.

"Yeah?" Dean asked softly.

"She thought it was too messy," Cas finished, mumbling. He rubbed his arm.

"Well, I am going to greatly enjoy being here for your first pizza experience," Dean said, trying to cheer Cas up.

Dean did, in fact, greatly enjoy Cas' first pizza experience. Cas got tomato sauce all over his face when he accidentally missed his mouth, causing Dean to snort beer out of his nose, which is not an experience he would recommend. He had to help Cas get all the sauce off his face, which Cas was embarrassed about, but overall he seemed to enjoy the pizza. After they ate, Cas went to bed and Dean sat on the couch. For a moment, he thought about texting Sam, but then he decided against it. He watched TV for a while, then lay out on the couch and went to sleep.

Dean woke up to the sound of a thud and a muttered string of curses. He sat up to see Cas sitting up in the hallway, rubbing his head.

"Cas, what are you doing?" Dean asked, helping him up.

"I... I had to go to the bathroom. I thought I had the way back in my head. I didn't want to wake you up, but I guess I didn't need to worry about that," Cas said.

"What?" Dean asked, confused.

"You were in the living room instead of your bedroom, so you must have been awake," Cas explained. Dean led Cas back to his room.

"Oh. Of course..." Dean said. Cas stopped suddenly.

"Dean? I am staying in a guest bedroom, right?" he asked.

"Of course," Dean repeated, but the guilt must have been evident in his voice, because Cas saw right through it.

"Dean! I can't believe this! I refuse to sleep in your bed, I'm taking the couch from now on!" he exclaimed.

"No way! I'm not going to let you sleep on the couch, Cas," Dean insisted. Cas paused for a moment.

"I'm not going to win this argument, am I?" he asked.

"No," Dean replied. Cas sighed.

"Well, I'm not going to back down either, so I suppose there's only one option left," he said.

"What do you mean?" Dean asked.

"We're sharing the bed. And you are not arguing that with me, Dean!" Cas insisted. It was Dean's turn to sigh.

"Fine," he relented. Cas nodded and crawled into the bed. Dean lay on the other side, very aware of Cas next to him. Cas started to fall asleep, and rolled over, taking the covers with him.

"Oh no you don't," Dean said. He pulled on the covers but Cas held on to his side.

"But blanket burrito!" Cas pouted.

"Fine. I'll go get myself another one," Dean said. When he got back, Cas looked fast asleep, his knees pulled up to his chest, buried in a mountain of blanket. He smiled and flopped down next to him, wrapping his own blanket around himself and closing his eyes to sleep.

Dean woke up slowly the next morning to find his face inches from Cas'. Dean watched him for a minute, before realizing what he was doing and rolling out of bed quickly. He walked out to the living room and sat on the couch, running his hand through his hair. He sat there for a while before Cas knocked on the wall next to the bedroom door.

"Dean?" He asked.

"Yeah, I'm here," Dean said, standing back up and walking over to him.

"Dean, I... I wanted to ask you something," Cas said, sounding embarrassed.

"Sure, Cas, what do you want?" Dean asked.

"I... I want to... To see you," Cas mumbled.

"What do you mean?" Dean asked, confused.

"I... Never mind," Cas said, blushing.

"No, what is it you want, Cas?" Dean repeated.

"I want to know what you look like..." Cas said softly, reaching his hand out tentatively.

"Oh. Sure. Here, let's go into the living room," Dean said, leading Cas down the hall. They sat down next to each other but Cas remained silent and didn't move.

"Cas, it's okay," Dean said reassuringly. Cas raised his hand tentatively towards Dean's face. Dean watched his hand as it touched his cheek. Dean's mind went blank as Cas started to run his hand over Dean's face. Cas smiled slightly after a few seconds.

"What?" Dean asked.

"I like your face," Cas said. Dean chuckled a bit, but his breath hitched as Cas ran his fingers through Dean's hair. Cas ran his hands down Dean's neck and hit the cord of his necklace.

"What's this? You didn't strike me as a necklace kind of guy," he said.

"Oh... Uh... My brother gave it to me when we were kids," Dean said.

"You have a brother?" Cas asked, following the cord down to the pendant laying against Dean's chest.

"Yeah," Dean said, trying not to let his sadness show.

"That's nice. I'd like to meet him someday," Cas said, letting go of the pendant and going back to tracing Dean's face. Dean watched Cas, seeing the tiny smile at the corner of his mouth, but it disappeared quickly. Cas put his hand down.

"Is something wrong?" Dean asked.

"Dean... What do I look like?"
