Season 7 Episode 16
Emma was walking into Chicago Med holding Jay's hand, it was his checkup for his shoulder. A nurse showed them into the exam room.
"Does he need to put on a gown or..." Emma asked the nurse.
"No, just take off your shirt and the doctor will be right with you." The nurse said leaving the room.
"Was it just me or was that very Porno like? Also, she was totally checking you out." Jay chuckled and kissed Emma, she turned the kiss deeper as he picked her up and placed her onto the exam table. Emma lifted his shirt over his head and broke the kiss.
"I love your abs, they're like my third favorite feature of yours. Next to your face and your biceps."
"What about my personality?" Jay asked sarcastically.
"I'm more of a looks first, toxic personality check after kinda girl." Emma responded. The doctor came in and Jay crossed his arms, Emma almost melted into a puddle on the floor, who gave him the right to be this hot? The Doctor lifted up his right arm and moved it around a few times.
"Are you feeling any lingering effects from the shooting?" The doctor asked.
"Now when I put my shirt on I put my left arm through first." Jay said. "Other than that it feels good."
"How's the mobility, any stiffness?" The doctor asked.
"Nothing that would prevent me from doing my job or holding my daughter." Emma rolled her eyes, he should be focusing on himself not on them.
"Are you feeling any lingering psychological effects?"
"Yes."
"No." Emma and Jay looked at each other and the doctor looked at Emma.
"Yes?"
"Yes, the other morning when you were driving Nick to school you thought you were being followed."
"And I was, the black car was going to the school." Emma put her hands up.
"Anxiety, mood swings, irritability-"
"How about increased sex drive, not that I'm complaining but... we had sex like every night last week, again I'm really not complaining." The doctor laughed but Jay blushed.
"That too, so Jay?"
"No, I'm good. Just in awe at her sexyness." Emma smiled coyly and looked at the ground. "But honestly doc this visit is starting to make me feel a little iritabule." Jay's expresion changed and Emma handed him his shirt, he snatched it back a little roughly.
"It's just protocol detective. But you should know that by now, I've read your Injured on Duty record. You've had a hell of a run, six broken fingers, one broken wrist, five broken ribs, lacerated skull, over a hundred stitches, and this is not the first time you've been shot. Chicago med should give you frequent flier miles." Emma looked at Jay with fear in her face as he looked at the doctor half sad, and half angry.
"Look doc I feel fine, strong, clear, just sign whatever it is you sign so I can go back to work." Jay said, the doctor nodded and Emma left the room.
'''''''''''''
"So, he said to avoid bullets, leds bad for your health." Jay said coming out, Emma chuckled.
"I just talked to Voight, he wants us partnered up again." Emma said.
"So you can keep an eye on me?"
"Because we're good together, and because I asked him. You alright with that?" Emma asked as Jay pressed the elevator button, he leaned in and kissed her on the cheek.
"I am."
"Units on the city wide 2533 South Wiple, armed robbery in progress. Pay-Day advantage." His radio said interrupting the moment.
"That's right up Cermak, let's take the stairs." Emma said.
"5021 Gorge we're rolling on it." Jay said into his radio.
''''''''''''''
After Jay and Emma arrived they found a store that had been robbed and the offenders fleeing
in a grey van. Jay had also tried to help a civilian who got shot in the process. As Jay saw the
ambulance off and Emma talked to patrol officers, Jay noticed a cavlin who tried to help him
with the man who'd been shot standing at one of the ambulances. She was shaking and talking
to a female EMT. He walked over to them as the women got ready to walk away.
"Hold on. I gotta talk to you for a sec."
"Oh, well I can't believe this it's horrible."
"Yeah, I know. We're just trying to piece together everything that's happened. Could you tell me your name?"
"Michelle, Michelle Taylor."
"Okay, where were you when the robbery went down?"
"I was in the store, down the street, shopping." Jay nodded his head.
"Okay, Michelle do you remember seeing anyone or anything that was suspicious before the robbery?"
"No, I was inside the store and when I came out I heard shooting. I was scared so I hid behind a car, and that's when I saw that man get shot. So I went to help him."
"Your a good Semertin." Jay told her.
"Thank you. Well uh, if you don't need anything else I have to go and pick up my daughter from school."
"I just need to take down your information. Just in case we have anymore questions." Jay told her.
"Of course."
'''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''
"Alright, what we've got was three guys, two of them go inside to hit the place, third one was waiting in the van down the street as a getaway driver." Jay told Voight as he and Emma caught him up to speed.
"They are experienced and motivated." Emma said.
"Yeah, they definitely had no problem pulling the trigger." Jay said.
"Well we get a look at these guys?" Voight asked.
"No, they were wearing masks. Also, when the shooting started a bystander got hit, he was just a guy on his way home from work." Kim and Rojas came over.
"Clerk said both offenders where male and white, she saw their necks under the masks. She also saw them pass the door strip. Said that one was 6 feet, the other was 6 four." Kim told them.
"The only physical evidence inside the store are these zip ties, they were used to restrain victims." Rojas said, Adam and Kevin came over.
"Patrol found the silver van, it was parked about a mile down the road in an abandoned parking lot off Division. It's been torched, it's still on fire. IT was stolen about a week ago according to reports."
"So that's where they made the switch. No prints, no DNA?" Voight asked.
"No, no pics either. They spray painted all the security cameras as soon as they walked into the store." Kevin said,
"Well the fact that they knew where the camera's where suggest they cased the place. So keep talking to witnesses, have Rocky pull all surveillance in the last couple months. These guys did their homework, catch them studying." Voight said.
'''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''
"All right, bring me up to speed." Voight said coming up the steps of the bullpen.
"The same crew has hit two other check cashing places in the last two weeks, this makes three and you've got yourself a pattern." Emma said.
"They use gloves and masks, same MO, and they're stealing every time to cover their tracks." Jay said.
"Sarge, Rocky and I pulled the rest of our eyes on the block like you said." Rojas said, she was helping Rocky wheel in a large monitor to the front of the room.
"And." Voight asked as everyone crowded around Kevin's desk and looked at Rocky.
"Okay, so, as far as we can tell they had a lookout, and that's our way in." Rocky said pulling up the video on the screen.
"I thought this was a three man crew." Voight said.
"I did too, but this makes four." He pulled up the video. "So this is the drug store on the corner five minutes before the robbery. The kid on the bike, that's our lookout." Rocky said.
"He's watching the patrol car down the block." Rojas said. "And as soon as that patrol car leaves."
"He calls it in." Voight said.
"Yep, and here comes trouble as the van they escaped in pulls up. But I did get a plate, it's going to get us nowhere, but for some reason I still feel kinda proud." Rocky said.
"All right, so how do we get the kid?" Voight asked.
"Rocky ran facial rec, his name is Jamal Meeky, he's 20. He's got one prior for breaking and entering, he spent a year in juvie."
"Run him up."
'''''''''''''''''''''''
After talking to Jamal and getting nowhere, they figured out he wasn't really a part of the heist as they all met back in the bullpen.
"I ran his phone records. The only two calls he made where to his friends, minors with small drug priors. Nothing there." Rocky said.
"The women that he thought looked suspicious, Michelle Taylor. I interviewed her at the crime scene."
"The good Samaritan?" Emma asked.
"The good Samaritan gave me a bogus number. Also, her story does not jibe with Jamals. She said she was inside the time of the robbery, but he said she was outside the whole time."
"All right, now she's a suspect, find her." Voight said.
''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''
"You need me?" Emma asked as they pulled up to Michelle's flower store.
"No, I'm going to run this on my own. Stay safe." He told her getting out. Jay walked into the flower store and saw Michelle Taylor and a little girl making flower arrangements.
"Excuse me, maybe you could help me?" Jay asked, Michelle's face fell flat as she cleared her throat.
"Tina, go to the office and start your homework."
"Mommy!" The little girl whined.
"What did I say?" The little girl sulked into the back.
"So you do have a daughter, that part's true anyway." Jay said.
"How'd you find me?"
"A Prius registered to this florist was parked outside the robbery." Jay said. "You wanna start over, tell me your real name?" Jay asked.
"Michelle, Michelle Sullivan."
"Why'd you give me false information?" Jay asked.
"I'm sorry, I didn't want to get involved with the police."
"I've got a witness saying you where going store to store and acting strangely during the time of the robbery. You told me you where inside shopping when you heard gunshots. Was that a lie too?"
"No, I was confused. There was just so much going on. I didn't." Michelle looked outside and got a worried expression on her face.
"Are you involved with the robbery?" Jay asked, she looked outside then back at Jay. Jay turned around and looked outside, a man was standing in front of the shop on the phone. "If you're in some kind of trouble, you know I can help?" Jay told her.
"No, you can't." The shop door opened and the man came in.
"Hey baby." The man said kissing Michelle on the cheek. "Where's Tina?"
"She's in the back doing homework." The man eyed Jay up and down.
"You okay?"
"Oh yeah! I'm just helping a customer." She said.
"Oh, who you getting flowers for?"
"My Fiancée." Jay said.
"Well man, carnations are for parades. If I where you I'd go red roses."
"Yeah, but everybody goes red roses." The man laughed.
"Yeah, because it works and it's a classic." The man said picking up a large bouquet.
"Yeah, alright sounds good." Jay said.
''''''''''''''''''''''
Emma was sitting in the car when the door opened and she felt something placed on her lap.
"Awww, my favorite. You know my middle name is Rose. I'm Emma Rose. What a guy." She said happily.
"When her husband came in, she told him I was a customer. Something didn't feel right."
"Yeah well, I took pictures and ran them through the system, we got a hit. Turns out our good Samaritan is married, to a convicted felon."
"Let me guess, armed robbery?"
"Bingo. Told you we where good together."
'''''''''''''
"Michelle Taylor is actually Michelle Sullivan. She married Shane Sullivan, he's 30 years old, he's lived his whole life in Bridgeport. Well, except for those three years he was in prison for armed robbery. He was released six months ago and he works in construction." Emma said, as they gathered around in the bullpen.
"We talked to the guys on robbery who worked the case. It was a three man crew doing home invasions. They arrested Shane, tried to get him to flip on the others, He wouldn't do it. Old school loyal, ate the whole charge."
"All right, any new leads on the crew." Voight asked.
"Shane is 6" 4', so he matches the teller's description." Rojas said.
"I ran his phone records, the only person he's called in the last two days is his wife, so that means the crew is talking through burners." Rocky said.
"And Michelle, the good Samaritan, anything on her yet?" Voight asked.
"Michelle Sullivan, also 30, born and raised in Bridgeport. She's got zero criminal history, she's got an eight year old daughter, and she works part time as a florist." Jay said.
"And part time look out for her husbands robbery crew." Rojas said, Emma and Rocky gave her a glance.
"Well that's the theory, we don't have the evidence." Jay said defensively.
"I mean it wasn't a coincidence that she was at a check cashing store."
"Yeah, Rojas, I hear all of that. But based on her behavior, she didn't give me up as a cop to her husband, and that suggested to me that she's in danger with him. I think she scared. So we gotta cultivate her, win her trust."
"I'm with Jay." Emma said. "If we play hardball and push her and she's not into that, she tips us off to Shane."
"Right, and there's no way in hell that guy is going to talk to the police. He'll shut down the whole crew and it will all just disappear into the wind." Jay said.
"Get out your cameras, follow Shane, get a tracker on his car, and dig into his associates. Let's get them in pocket before they strike again." Voight said.
'''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''
Jay and Emma sat in his truck watching the Sullivan house, Jay had that look on his face.
"Don't do anything stupid. I don't know what's with you and single moms, but I think you have a type." She warned him, he chuckled but then his face fell again. "Damn, you are really a brooder today." Shane and Michelle walked out of the house in an argument.
"Saddle up, our boys coming out of the house." Jay said into his radio.
"Target is getting into a grey, four door, BMW."
"That's way too nice of a car to afford on a, part time florist salary." Emma said, Jay nodded in agreement.
"He's heading south down Princeton on 33."
'''''''''''''''''''''''''''''
"So the guy you caught Shane meeting with is Mike Brady, this guy is notorious in Bridgeport."
Rocky said putting his picture up on the board in the bullpen. "He's been a person of interest in
over a dozen heists, all still open. Brady is a tough guy to catch, he only feeds when he's hungry.
The window of opportunity to catch this guy is slim and it closes fast, real fast." Rocky put another picture up on the board.
"This guy is no joke, he works for Brady. His name is Eric Walsh, he's 40, he's another Bridgeport boy , he's got a time share at the county jail." Rocky said. "He just did six months for possession of an illegal fire arm." Rocky said. "So the good news about your crew is that they are defiantly still active, but meeting for coffee is not a crime. So you need to act more, catch them solid, then make your case." Rocky said, his phone rang and he put his finger up.
"This is the most screen time he's ever gotten." Kevin said to Emma she nodded.
"That was a nurse at Chicago Med, Carl Hoffman, the man who got shot. He just died, and he left behind three kids. This is not a robbery anymore, it's now homicide. Take off your gloves guys, shit's getting real." Rocky said.
''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''
Jay and Emma had brought in Michelle, and they where now interviewing her. Jay placed crime scene photos in front of her.
"Michelle, these are photos from the other day. We are more than sure one of these is your husband." Jay said.
"No, that's not possible." She said shaking her head.
"He just did 3 years in jail, for armed robbery, I'd say that there's a good chance that it's a possibility." Emma said.
"You where there to help him." Jay said.
"No." Michelle said.
"Come on, you've been lying to us from the get-go, what where you doing there? Why are you on the street? What, are you their lookout?" Jay asked.
"No, I already told you I was shopping."
"We ran through the security footage, you where never in that store. You wanna try again?" Emma asked, Jay put Carl Hoffman's picture down on the table in front of her.
"This man, the one that you where trying to save. His name was Carl Hoffman, he died. That means not only is this robbery, it's homicide. That also puts you on the hook for felony murder." Jay said.
"Look, we can still help you. You've got no priors. If you help us and corporate, we can make sure you live a full and happy life, see your daughter go to college. If not, you're looking at fifteen years." Emma said.
"If you know my husband did this, why are you talking to me?" She asked.
"Because we don't have any evidence against him yet, just you." Emma told her.
"But I didn't do anything. I really need to get home, my daughter is getting dropped off from a play date."
"Michelle you don't get it, you're not going home." Jay said. "You're not going home for a long time. Unless you help us."
"I'd like to make that phone call, but I'm not going to help you."
'''''''''''''''''''''''''
Emma and Jay walked out and back into the bullpen.
"She's not cooperating, so far we've got nothing." Jay said sitting on Emma's desk.
"I don't understand, why are we soft-shoeing here? We can put her at the scene. We can try and build a case." Adam said.
"Michelle denies seeing anything, and we can't prove she did anything." Kim said.
"Right, and if she doesn't testify we can't even place Shane at the scene."
"Hey Emma." Trudy said coming up the stairs and holding a file. "I ran all those in service calls to the Sullivan residence."
"And?"
"Nothing, not at her current address, but they used to rent an apartment on the other side of Bridgeport." Platt said, Emma thanked her and took the file.
"Let's pump the breaks on pressing Michelle, I have one more thing I'd like to try." Emma said, Voight nodded.
"Do it, you've got two hours."
''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''
"Hi, I'm Doctor Gordan." A women said shaking hands with Emma and Jay as they walked through med.
"Detective Rossi and Detective Halstead, here's the subpoena, thank you for taking the time to help." Emma said.
"No problem, I'm happy too."
"So you where the intake doctor that helped Michelle Sullivan four years ago, the police responded to a domestic."
"That's right, she was brought in on an ambulance. I was also able to find all the intake photos and x-rays with my notes attached. But I could remember this without my notes." Dr. Gordan said.
"Really, from four years ago?" Jay asked.
"The bad ones stay with you." She responded pulling up photos of a badly beaten Michelle. "She had swelling around the eye and six fractured ribs. She claimed it was from a bike accident."
"But it wasn't from a bike accident." Emma said.
"No, and it wasn't the first time this happened either, she'd had her ribs broken before. I mean, these are injuries a boxer might sustain. I asked her straight up if her husband was hurting her, told her she could be protected. Her husband showed up, and that was that."
"Did you notify the police?" Emma asked.
"Of course, but she refused to press charges and I couldn't prove that she didn't fall off her bike."
"Is there anything else you can remember?"
"He seemed like a normal guy, even brought her flowers." Jay scoffed.
"Let me guess, red roses."
"Yeah."
"Thank's for your time doc." Emma said.
'''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''
Back in the interview room, Emma was putting the pictures of Michelle's accident down in front of her.
"This is the one we do know about, but there have been a lot of other's haven't there. One's you where two afraid to report, one's that you where ashamed of. I know how hard it is to leave them, I do. You built a life with him, you love him, but deep down you know you gotta get out."
"Shane's not perfect, but he's not what you think."
"He's a violent criminal who beats women, what are we missing?" Jay asked.
"Shane's a good guy, he's a good father, he's just been under a lot of stress." Once Emma put the final picture down, and Michelle was staring back into her own eyes, it was over.
"And you know what happens when he's under a lot of stress don't you? Or in a bad mood, thinking he saw you looking at a guy, maybe you left the dishes in the sink, this is your chance Michelle! To get out, to get out of going to prison! To build a new life for you and your daughter! To get out of it all. Michelle, why where you at the check cashing store?"
"What where you doing there? Just tell us." Jay said.
"Okay! Okay! I overheard Shane talking on the phone, he was talking about a job at the green garden strip. I went there to stop him because I KNEW what that meant. He couldn't go to prison again! We just needed to be normal for Tina's sake!"
"Did you see him in there?" Emma asked.
"No." Michelle said. "I didn't see him, but I was looking for him. All I knew is that he was there, so when I heard the shooting I knew. I knew." She said, Emma and Jay nodded and Emma picked all the photo's back up.
''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''
"We need her to wear a wire." Hank said coming out of the room with Rojas and meeting the two of them in the hallway. "Get a confession."
"I think she might do it." Jay said leaning against the file cabinet.
"I don't know, I've been behind those closed doors. When I was a kid, and I know what it's like. When you've been exposed to it for so many years it becomes a routine. All you think about is survival, and that's all she's thinking about right now."
"All right, so how do we get her?" Voight asked.
"Give her hope, give her survival, give her a way out." Emma said, "She needs proof of a real, touchable, escape plan. One where her and her daughter are safe and he can't reach them."
"I've got my contact at social services." Rojas said. "I'll call her."
"Okay, let's do it." Voight said.
'''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''
"So the city keeps these apartments, they're like safe houses, used for special situations." Jay said as he and Emma lead Michelle into a nice apartment.
"What about Shane?" She asked.
"There's a 24 hour doorman downstairs, no one get's up here." Jay said.
"And what would I need to do?" Michelle asked.
"Wear a wire."
"Okay, I'll do it." Michelle said.
''''''''''''''''''''''''''
After an intense take down, Michelle and her daughter are going to live in Arizona with her sister. Shane is going to prison, and Emma and Jay are meeting up in an old bar booth. Emma was drinking ginger ale and Jay was drinking beer.
"I didn't know, that you where abused." Jay said, Emma nodded.
"It's not something I put out there usually." Jay nodded. "But uh yeah, not me but growing up my mom and dad would get into it bad. She would hit him and beat him, he wouldn't have a choice but to stand up for himself.I mean they hated each other, just flat out hated each other. It was like that until the day I found my grandfather, until the day I started living with him when I was 13."
"What happened, to your mom and dad?" Jay asked, Emma sighed.
"She killed him Jay, my mom. She killed my father. That's how I met Voight, he helped my grandfather investigate."
"Did they ever prove it?" Jay asked, Emma shook her head.
"My mom's a rich lady, she got off with a slap on the wrist, now all she does is travel and hang out with rich people."
"I'm so sorry." Jay said, Emma shook her head.
"You would have loved him. He was so funny and charming.
"Well I can see where you get it from."
"But let's talk about all those injuries. I mean for real." Emma said.
"They where army injuries or job injuries, really I'm fine." He said.
"You better be, I need you to be 100 percent for our daughter, and for me, I kinda want you around a little longer."
"just a little?" Jay asked.
"Yeah, once the life insurance goes through knock yourself out, literally." Emma and Jay laughed but where interrupted by her phone.
"Hello?" She paused. "OH MY God!" She squealed, "Hey! How are you? I'm great, I miss you guys, what?" Emma got quiet and looked at Jay. "I don't know Jubal, I'll think about it. Alright, tell the girls I said hello, you too."
"What?" Jay asked.
"That was the F.B.I. They wanted me back for a few as a temporary agent."
"What'd you say?"
"I said I'd think about it, I don't know. I mean, It's New York. I'm from New York, I am New York, and I do miss the F.B.I."
"Well you have to come back, I cannot loose anther girlfriend to the F.B.I, let alone the New York one."
"Ha ha, now come on, I wanna get home and see Nick." Emma said, Jay finished his beer and they headed home, together.
