The Drive

POV: Alan

We get in my car and head off. After five minutes Melody asks me, "Alan where are we going?"

"What don't you trust me? We're going somewhere special," I answer.

"Uhhhh..... ok."

"Don't worry you will be ok. Are you hungry?"

"Didn't we just have lunch a little while ago?" Melody asks.

"Did you actually eat?"

"Yes! (She basically yells) ..... (Then she gets a little quieter) yes that's my problem."

"What do you mean?"

"I am always eating, it seems that I just eat whatever and whenever. It doesn't even matter if I'm hungry or not..... That's sort of what those girls were laughing about."

I just sit there quietly listening and she looks up. I am quiet giving her time to get herself together and allow her to continue.

"That one girl said 'hey look at the ugly ducklings and their duck faces... Well it makes since to go along with the fat that's in that lunch.'"

She starts to cry. We are halfway there and I think this place we are going to will help her calm down.

She tries to continue, but she is crying so much I can hardly understand when she tries to talk.

I pull into a parking lot and look at her. "It's ok Melody if you want to wait until we get there to tell me. If you want to talk about it. We are almost there."

She looks at me and nods. I reach over and hug her. She hugs me back, and we sit there for a few minutes.

"Ok let's get there and then we can finish."

I start to drive again and a few minutes later I say to her, "You know out of all of this God does love and care for you. He even gives you people in your life to care and look out for you. Even if you don't know it."

She looks at me with the hurt in her eyes and I try to look at her and watch the road. She giggles a little bit because I was bouncing my head back and forth like a bobble head. I give her one of my "Powell"ful smiles and she smiles me then down at her feet.

"Do you mind if I turn on music for the last few minutes?" She asks.

"No not at all randomly grab a cd from behind and hand it to me, but don't look just try to reach for one," I reply.

"Why?"

"It's a fun game I like to play with the guys when we go on the road. I am always making up games. One of them is the movie game, but this one is different. I think this game is funny funny trying to see Caleb or Joey trying to reach back with their "short" arms. It makes it even harder trying to tell them not to look. Joey even once fell and couldn't get back up until all three of us helped him up. He got caught in between the seats."

One of the biggest laughs that you could hear came from her as she reaches back for a cd. She didn't see which one she grabbed because as soon as Melody handed it to me, she looked out the window.

"Ok pick a number between 1 and 12."

"Uhhhhh.... Eleven."

I smile and gladly hit play. When the lyrics started she opened her eyes wide and looked full of emotion. I couldn't tell what the emotion was, but it was a good one this time.

Then I suddenly realized... they were full of love.

I didn't know what this song did, but I'm glad it did its magic.

"Picked up the phone again. Put it right back down. That was such a lame attempt, to try to help you out.....
