Coming Out
Lisa's POV
At the parking area of the University, me and Jennie just went out of her car. We were walking to our building for our first class. I was still dazed about what happened yesterday. I got myself a girlfriend.
Kim Jennie, my first love is now my girlfriend. I can't still believe it and I'm happy to know that we have the same feelings. She loves me all along but she couldn't just admit it. I won't blame her for that. We have our own time for every thing.
As we walked in the hallway, there was an urge to hold her hand but I had to restrain myself, she wasn't out yet and I wouldn't force her.
Then I saw Chaeyoung running to me with her open arms, she quickly wrapped her arms around my neck causing me and Jennie to stop walking.
Jennie turned to us with her cold stare and didn't say anything.
I swallowed hard as I tried to push Chaeyeoung but the latter wouldn't budge.
I nervously smiled "Chaeng... what are you doing?" I mumbled.
"Good morning babe!" Chaeyoung greeted as she faced me. "I missed you," she said pouting then she suddenly kissed my cheek.
"Ya... Park Chaeyoung! What... why did you do that?" I stammered trying to push her but she was stronger.
"Ya Lalisa... What's wrong babe? I always do that..." Chaeyoung playfully said.
I looked at Jennie, she was glaring at us. Sweat started to form on my forehead, I was flustered.
"Are you okay?" Chaeyoung asked concerned as she touched my forehead and cheeks to check my temperature.
Jennie coughed to get our attention and we both looked at her.
"Oh. Jennie, hi! There you are, I didn't notice you." Chaeyoung said as she put her chin on my shoulder. She was very touchy. I knew, she was doing this because she wanted to make Jennie jealous. She was still up for that plan. I could sense it.
"What are you doing?" Jennie sputtered as she crossed her arms with an attitude but she wasn't on the warpath.
"Jennie... Chaeng is my best friend..." I bumbled and this time I gently shoved Chaeyoung then stepped away from her.
"Lisa..." Chaeyoung whined but I didn't look at her. I just stared intently at Jennie.
Jennie stepped forward to Chaeyoung and looked at her.
Chaeyoung stiffened "What?" She intimidated by my girlfriend.
"Best friend huh?" Jennie sneered then offered a hand to shake. "Nice to meet you Chaeyoung. I'm Lisa's girlfriend," she introduced confidently.
Geez... She dropped the bombshell just like that.
Chaeyoung glanced at me then looked back at Jennie. She slowly took and shook their hands. I guess, she was contemplating the situation. After few seconds, finally, it hit her as her face brightened.
"O-M-G! Oh my gosh! For real? Jinjjayo?" Chaeyoung squealed then gave us a short bear hug.
Jennie smiled a bit "Eung..." She hummed as she nodded her head.
"Whoaa, na jeongmal haengbokhaeyo! Chukhahaeyo!" (I'm really happy! Congrats!) Chaeyoung happily said as she messed my hair like a child "I'm so proud of you."
I smiled sheepishly "Thanks Chaeng."
Jennie intervened as she stepped between Chaeyoung and me then put her arm around my shoulders "Let's go to our class, we will be late." I saw her glared at Chaeyoung for split second then forced a smile. "Thank you."
Is she jealous? I thought.
Jennie dragged me and we started to walk so I glanced back at Chaeyoung. She grinned and gave the look as she wiggled her eyebrows. I smiled at her as she followed.
"She's being very touchy to you," Jennie muttered.
"Are you jealous?" I asked.
She barely nodded.
I raised my eyebrows, I didn't expect her response "What do you want me to do?" I asked curiously.
"Nothing. I won't reprimand you. She's your best friend, you two are used to it." She simply answered. I was glad that she wasn't mad about it and I didn't feel that I was on a tight leash. That was a good sign of relationship, I thought.
"She's an exception because she's your best friend but if others touch you without my permission, they will get something from me," her tone was ambiguous. I couldn't tell if that was a warning or something more.
"Okay, I won't let others touch me then," I agreed as a good girlfriend.
Jennie glanced at me and smiled "You're so cute Lisa."
"And you're so pretty Jennie," I replied.
"Cheesy much..." Chaeyoung mumbled as she walked faster and passed us.
I giggled.
I knew, this would be a good day.
-
I never thought that this situation would be so difficult and edgy for me.
I was very nervous to finally meet my girlfriend's mother. Jennie invited me to come with her to the hospital after school. She told me that she will introduce me to her mother as her girlfriend.
Jennie is my girlfriend now and I'm beyond happy because of that. She confessed to me that she wasn't ready before to come out and I understand her. Some gay people have a hard time to do that because it's not easy. Yeah, it looks easy but it's not. It's not that simple as it looks like.
When you come out, you have to consider a lot of things and everything will never be the same anymore. You may lose friends or people who are important to you, others will judge you and some will not accept you.
But if you think about it, you don't really need to listen to other people. It is you so if they don't accept you, just leave it. If they leave you, move on because you can't do anything to change their minds. Just focus on the people who would stay even if they knew what you are and still, accepted you. That's what matter.
People come and go, either to love you or give you a lesson.
And don't mind the strangers, they don't know you. They might say bad things, judge you or taunt you but don't be affected because they don't know your story. They don't know what you have gone through.
Be who you are. Accept it. I swear, it will make you happy like I do.
Jennie was holding my hand as we entered the room of her mother in the hospital. We stopped next to her mother's bed. She looked like sleeping comfortably minus the wires that attached to her. I think the machine was helping her to breathe.
Her mother was beautiful and Jennie resembled her so much. Surely, Jennie would be just like her when she gets older. I smiled just of that thought. I hope, I'm still with her when we get old.
"Hi mom, how are you today?" She greeted sweetly.
"I really miss you. I just went from school and I have someone with me today," she glanced at me and smiled. "I know you can hear me mom. I want you to know her but before that, I will confess something to you."
Jennie squeezed my hand then she took in a deep breath. I turned my head and stared at her.
"Mom... I just discovered something about me just recently." Jennie looked nervous as she swallowed silently. "I already knew about this but I never acknowledged it. I didn't want to, I just wanted to stay in the closet. I was planning to stick on that but someone helped me to come out."
I leaned forward to Jennie and put my arm around her shoulders, I was side hugging her while my other hand held hers.
"Someone helped me to accept myself and that someone loves me. She never gave up on me even if I pushed her away. She never leave my side so I'm here talking to you, feeling great and new." I could feel her trembled.
"I also had depression and she helped me. She helped me to get through it. I feel the love, care and support. Her love is still helping me in every possible way so I chose to keep going. I don't know if you will be mad about this," her voice was shaking too. She was about to cry but she was holding it back.
"But that person is here and I also love her. I always knew that I do but I kept ignoring it for a long time. I hurt her a lot." Her tears started to fall on her cheeks.
I massaged her arm to comfort her and also, I kissed her temple.
"Yes mom... it's her. I love her so much. I want you to know that I'm gay." She almost whispered the last two words then started to sniffle.
"I guess, I'm only gay for her," she clarified as she giggled. I smiled as I wiped her tears.
"She completes me mom. And don't worry, she's really good at taking care of me. I want you to meet my girlfriend, here's Lisa, my love," she proudly introduced me.
I let go of her and bowed to her mother as a sign of respect "Annyeong haseyo Mrs. Kim, I'm Lisa. It's my pleasure to finally meet you."
Jennie smiled "She's beautiful, she's smart and she's really kind hearted person mom but she's down to earth as well with no pretension. And she loves me so much," she said pouring her heart out.
"I love your daughter Mrs. Kim and I promise that I will take care of her. I will make her happy and I will never leave her. I will stay with her as long as she wants me to," I said giving my pledge. These were my words and I'd do anything to fulfill it.
I have my own stance and I will never break it.
Jennie held my hand "I want you to stay with me forever Lisa."
I smiled at Jennie, she was sweet and I was so touched "Then I will stay with you forever."
Jennie pecked my cheek then wrapped her arms around me "I love you Lisa. Thank you for everything."
"I love you too, Jennie."
Her warm comforted me, it felt really great.
I'm contented with this, I won't ask for more. I have people who truly love me and that's enough. I grew up without a family, I lived on the street with no one to support me. I thought life is unfair and I wished I had never been born because of that. I was wrong to think like that, I'm so glad, I was wrong.
Life is a blessing from God. People who love you are also blessing from Him. They became my family. For me, I could overcome all the problems as long as I'm with them. They give me strength, they give me reasons to live. My family is my source of love.
Suddenly, I saw Mrs. Kim's index finger moved up for a second.
My eyebrows raised "Omo Jennie, your mom... I saw her moving!" I exclaimed.
Jennie unwrapped her arms from me then leaned to her mother to check "Mom?"
I swallowed hard.
Mrs. Kim moved her hand and slowly she opened her eyes.
"Mom!" Jennie squeaked happily. "Thank God, you're awake now..."
Mrs. Kim looked at us and she smiled though her eyes were sleepy.
A relief smile crept across my face "Thank God," I mumbled.
But slowly, Mrs. Kim closed her eyes.
"What's happening?" Jennie asked terrified. "Mom? Mom!" She panicked.
I quickly pushed the emergency button to call the nurse as Jennie tried to wake Mrs. Kim up.
"No mom... please wake up!" Jennie burst into tears.
Gladly, the doctor and nurse came in.
"What happened?" The doctor asked.
I held Jennie's shoulders and we stepped backward.
"She woke up for few seconds..." Jennie answered.
The doctor checked her mother while I comforted Jennie.
The doctor sighed and looked at us. He smiled "It's a good sign. Finally, she woke up from coma. Surely, she will come round gradually," he informed as he tapped Jennie's shoulder.
"Really?" Jennie smiled and tears kept streaming down her cheeks. "Thank you Doc," she was happy and it was tears of joy.
"Next time, she will wake up longer and probably, you can talk with her." He added.
"Thank you so much Doc," Jennie said being relieved.
The doctor nodded then he left the room along with his nurse.
Jennie hugged me tightly "It's a good news Lisa!" She happily said.
I hugged her and patted her back "Indeed."
She buried her face on my shoulder and I kissed her head.
"I'm really happy," she whispered.
"Me too."
Mrs. Kim is brave and strong just like Jennie. She fought her battle and won and it's worth it. Even if they are strong, they also have their flaws. We are not perfect.
Things are getting better now. I hope that Mrs. Kim will fully recover fast.
