Baby found them in the corridor leading to the basement. Stiles looked up as he came closer. "Hi love", Baby greeted as he came closer. "Full name? Really? That's harsh". He pouted at him and Stiles rolled his eyes as he wrapped a arm round Baby's waist. Lydia and Allison both shared expressions of exasperation at the easy PDA.
"What is your real name?" Allison asked curiously.
"Not telling", Baby hummed. "It's embarrassing".
"I think your name is actually quite cute", Stiles muttered. "Much better than mine". Baby cooed and pressed a kiss to his boyfriend's cheek.
"Love, you're adorable but trust me, if you had grown up with this name then you wouldn't like it as much. Anyway, that name belongs to a dead boy".
"Oh stop being so Emo", Lydia rolled her eyes. "We have bigger things to deal with. Has Scott got the bag?" Stiles pulled out his phone and checked the messages.
"Yes. He and the Wolves are searching the basement now".
"Good", Allison nodded. "I should go home and check the bestiary. I think this class room has big enough windows". Baby followed them into the nearest classroom with a confused expression.
"What is going on?" He asked. "All I know is that some bomber is running around targeting kids with glowing eyes".
"William Barrow". At Baby's still confused look, Lydia huffed. "He put a bomb on a school bus that killed fourteen kids. He's called the shrapnel bomber".
"He came to the hospital for surgery", Stiles continued as Allison began picking the lock on the window. "But when they cut him open flies flew out of him and in the distraction he escaped".
"I've been hearing buzzing all day", Lydia groaned frustratedly.
"There!" Allison announced as she swung the window open. "The Bestiary is literally one thousand pages long. If I'm going to find anything about flies coming out of people's bodies, it can take me all night".
"And remember, the word for fly in archaic Latin is Musca", Lydia called as Allison swung her leg out.
"Try the Japanese monster section", Baby added. "I heard about flies being related to their mythical monsters. Not sure how true it is but it's a good place to start".
"Got it", Allison waved back at them before she dropped out the window.
Lydia turned to the two boys. "Where shall we start?"
"Upstairs", Stiles glanced at the clock. "And we'd better hurry".
"Wow", Baby remarked as he followed the two of them out of the classroom. "A bomber? For Halloween? Happy birthday to me. Can I eat him?" He asked. The corridors were empty as all the students were in class or outside.
Stiles paused and gave him a double take. "What? No! What about 'flies coming out of the body' did you not understand?"
Baby shrugged. "Still human blood. And it's Halloween. I want to go hunting. All I've been drinking is blood bags".
"Can we talk about this later? When there's not a mass murderer on the loose?" Stiles asked as he peered into an art room. It was the same classroom Baby had art lessons in. The three of the them crept in and began peering round behind the easels and the display boards.
"Hey that's my work", Baby pointed at a canvas covered in splattered colours. He grinned at them. "It's inspired by Jackson Pollock if you can't tell".
Lydia hummed at it and pursed her lips. "I can tell. You really captured his uh, essence?"
Baby's grin widened. "You think? I actually just tossed a ton of paint on it and bullshitted everything. The art teacher loved it". He laughed and continued looking round the room. "So the Wolves are in the basement?" He asked.
"Yeah. Scott, Issac and the twins", Stiles replied. "The plan is to meet in the middle in the boiler room".
"All of the Wolves", Lydia spoke slowly. Baby stopped at her tone. "All of the ones with glowing eyes are in the basement at the boiler room".
Stiles froze for a second before he turned. "Oh my god. An engineer can use the boiler room to blow up the whole school".
"We have to get them out of there".
"We have to get everyone out", Baby stated. He looked around them smiled and began heading towards the door. "Let's go and pull a fire alarm".
——
The three of them watched as the students hurried passed. The fire alarm ringing loudly through the halls. Baby watched as the teens all filed out of the exits. Some calmly in their friend groups, while others were moving at a speed walk. Baby turned to Stiles with a satisfied smile only to pause. Stiles grinned back at him, coach looming behind him with a very pissed off expression. Stiles's face fell at Baby's and Lydia's sudden expressions and turned. Coach had him by the ear and was pulling him towards the nearest exit before he could blink.
"Pulling a fire alarm on mischief night is one thing. Doing it when there's a mass murderer spotted nearby is insane!" Coach thundered as he tugged Stiles out of the school and into the car park. Baby and Lydia following a few feet behind. The two of them having enough sense to maintain a healthy distance from Coach's red face. "If I was four years younger I would punch you".
"What?" Stiles blinked. "Coach that doesn't make sense".
"Oh well it does to me", Coach snapped back before releasing him and storming away. Stiles rubbed his ear as he watched the teacher go. Baby sniggered and Stiles scowled at him.
"You wouldn't find it so funny if it was your ear".
"There they are", Lydia pointed. She grabbed both boys by the sleeves and pulled them over the grass to where Scott was visible in the crowds of students. Ethan, Aidan and Issac all with him.
"We didn't find anything", Scott sighed as they joined them. "Nothing. Not even a scent".
"It's three o'clock", Ethan stated. "If there was a bomb, wouldn't he have set it off by now?"
"Does that mean that everybody's safe?" Aidan added. They all turned to Lydia. She took a deep breath and exhaled.
"I don't know", she replied with big eyes. She glanced around worriedly as, in the background, the fire alarm cut off. "I just... I don't know".
——
School was long since over and the light had dropped outside. Baby and Lydia were sprawled across Stiles' bed, watching the boy fiddle with his pin board. The cork was covered in so many images and pieces of paper that the cork wasn't visible anymore. Red string crossed over it in long lines like a crime board. For it was a crime board, a mystery board. It was a mystery board of the supernaturals in beacon hills. Stiles' amazing mind out on display. Baby loved the board as it showed how Stiles' mind worked. How the connections became visible. Baby knew that he wasn't smart enough for something like that. He couldn't make connections. He just had random information that he could only hope would be useful.
"So what do the different colour strings mean?" Lydia asked. She was on her front on Stiles' mattress. Baby sat against the wall next to her. He was drinking from a styrofoam cup that, for once, was not filled with blood. This time it was a strawberry milkshake. He slurped on it loudly.
"Uh", Stiles hummed back. He gestured to the strings distractedly. "Green is solved. Yellow is too be determined, blue's just pretty. And red is unsolved".
"What does red mean?"
"Um, unsolved".
"You only have red on the board".
Stiles turned and huffed at her. "Yes. I'm aware. Thank you".
"Apart from that corner". Lydia pointed to apart of the wall that had two pieces of paper pinned to it. Green string had been stuck around it to form a star shape. "What's that case?" She squinted at it but it was too far away for her to read. "How come that's solved? Wouldn't you just take it down to make room for new stuff?"
Baby glanced at where she was pointing and felt his cheeks flush. Stiles and him shared a soft look. His sharp vampire eyes could pick out the two pieces of paper easily. One was a news report and the other was a photo. In the photo a small boy was waving a stick and grinning at the camera. The news report headline read 'local five year old boy goes missing'. "No. I like that one", Stiles replied fondly.
Lydia furrowed her brow at the lack of answer but did not press further, for which both Boys appreciated. "Did you get detention for pulling the alarm?" She asked, changing the subject.
"Yep", Stiles sighed. "Everyday this week. It's okay though", he turned to them. "We were on to something. And we can have time to celebrate your birthday".
Baby smiled. "I told you guys that I don't need to celebrate my birthday, not matter what Danny says".
"Oh hush", Lydia pointed at him. "You are going to let us celebrate your birthday if I have to tie you up so you stay there".
Baby laughed. "Yes Miss". Lydia grinned.
"Good". Then her smile fell and she sighed deeply. "We couldn't find any proof of Barrow being there".
"Hey lydia", Baby leaned forwards to take her hand. "You are right every time something like this happens. Listen to your banshee instincts".
"Yeah", Stiles nodded. "Don't start doubting yourself now".
"No scent, no bomb. And I got you in trouble".
"Actually I was the one who got Stiles in trouble", Baby corrected. "The fire alarm was my idea".
Stiles smirked. "Thanks babe".
"Your welcome darling", Baby grinned. "Enjoy your detentions". The two of them laughed then turned their attentions back to Lydia. "Lydia", Baby muttered softly. "He was there. I know that everything was telling you that you were wrong but he was there. What I know about banshee's is that they are never wrong. I mean it".
"If you want then we can go back to school and prove it", Stiles suggested. Lydia smiled at them in gratitude. Stiles blinked, his face blanking the way it did when something had just occurred to him. "Get up", he stood and waved at the two of them. "Get up now. We're going to the school".
