Stiles placed the vase of flowers down on Sheriff Stilinski's desk with little finesse. As soon as his hands were free, he was grabbing Baby's spare one again. "You know the last time we brought one of these to her grave, it was stolen the same day", he said. "Hundred bucks down the drain". Next to him, Baby took a swig of his thermos. Stiles narrowed his eyes at him. "You'd better have mints cause I'm not kissing you if your breath smells like blood".
Baby smiled at him and took another swig. A voice sounded from the floor behind the desk. "What did I hear about kissing?" The two boys leaned over to see Sheriff Stilinski knelt in a pile of files and red string.
"Hey dad? What are you doing down there?"
"Working", Sheriff stated. "What was this about kissing?" Stiles crossed round the desk to get a better look at the files.
"His Sheriff Stilinski", Baby shook his thermos in a small wave. The sheriff looked at him then at his and Stiles' joined hands.
"Hi Baby".
"Hey dad what is all this?" Stiles asked.
The sheriff waved a hand. "I've been looking over old files from a more illuminated perspective, if you know what I mean".
Baby peered at all the papers and boxes scattered around the floor. Stiles picked one up and read it aloud. "Strange sighting of bipedal lizard man sprinting across freeway".
"Kanima pile", The sheriff waved at a particularly thick group of files. Stiles dropped the paper down on top.
"Ewww lizard", Baby muttered. "Glad I missed that".
"You could have been cold blooded bros", Stiles voiced. Baby gave him a weird look and Stiles shrugged. "Or maybe not".
"Dad", Stiles sighed as he crouched down. The changed meant that he pulled Baby down with him. They both crouched awkwardly amongst the papers. "You're not going through your old cases seeing is any of them had anything to do with the supernatural, are you?"
"I admit that the recent opening of my eyes to the greater mysteries of the universe has got me...." the sheriff paused for a second. "Reassessing. There are at lest a hundred cases here where I can look at the details and ask 'if I knew then what know now,"-
"Are you sure you want to go down that path?" Stiles asked.
"Do I have a choice?" The sheriff sighed. "There's two cases in particular that I can't get out of my head". He stood up and Stiles and Baby moved with him. He grabbed two files. One was quite thin, only a few pages thick. The other was slightly bigger. He opened the bigger one first.
"The first case was twelve years ago. A five year old boy went missing in the woods. The familiar had moved here from England and had only been living here a few months when their son went missing". The sheriff gestured to his board of red lines. Baby scanned over it, sudden anxiety in his stomach. He could make out words such as 'full moon' written in columns and pictures pinned up next to them.
Sheriff Stilinski drew their eyes to a picture of a little boy with brown eyes and strawberry blonde hair. The child was looking grumpily at the camera, bottom lip sticking out in a pout. Baby felt himself freeze. He gripped Stiles' hand tightly as the man continued speaking. "Romeo Goldsmith went missing on June 15th, during a full moon. His family searched for almost a year before they believed him to be dead and moved back to England". The sheriff paused to sigh. "We scoured the woods for months and did not find any trace of him. It was like he disappeared into thin air".
"I remember that case", Stiles commented. "I remember overhearing you and Mom talking about it when you thought I was asleep".
"You were five", Sheriff Stilinski stated. Stiles shrugged.
"I have a good memory. baby?" His tone became concerned. Baby was frozen, staring at the photograph with wide eyes. He jolted at the sound of his name, hand clutching Stiles' reflexively. He took a shuddering breath.
"Well you can close that case", he smiled shakily. "Because that boy was me". Both stilinski's blinked at him in surprise. Looking at the picture now, it was easy to see. Both boys had the same eyes, though Baby's had darkened to black probably due to being a vampire. His hair had darkened too. From a light strawberry blonde to a brown russet colour. His face had matured but there was still the same bone structure. If Baby pouted, it would be startlingly obvious.
"Wait, wait" Stiles said quickly. "Your name is Romeo?"
"Technically it's Romeo Valentine Goldsmith junior", Baby tried to joke, but his breath was too shaky. "I was named after my dad and grandpa. But because I was the youngest, everyone called me Baby".
"But we never found you", Sheriff Stilinski stated. "Your sister was beside herself".
Baby rubbed the bridge of his nose. "I was playing in the woods and got lost. A vampire, my sire, took me and decided to turn me. It is a long process and it took months. Once I was turned and he had taught me how to control, it had been almost five years. I ran away from him and tracked down my family in England", he then laughed sharply and without humour. "What I didn't know was that my family were hunters, like the Argents. Upon learning that their son was a vampire, my parents disowned me and refused to take me back. I think they still believe that I'm dead. My sister took me. She was an adult then and she raised me but she died last year. Killed while hunting Wendigos. I took a different name, because legally I'm still missing, and decided to move back here". He shrugged as he finished speaking. There was a wetness in his eyes that he blinked back. He inhaled shakily and smiled.
"There you go. Closure on that case. What's the next one?" The sheriff opened his mouth to speak, maybe press further about what exactly happened but the look on Baby's face stopped him. The boy was obviously holding himself together. He didn't seem like he wanted to talk anymore. He was gripping Stiles' hand like a lifeline.
The sheriff inhaled. "Right. I can close that case". He plucked the photo of young Baby off the board and tucked it back in his file. Baby wore a expression of relief. "Eight years ago when I was elected sheriff of the county, my first official duty was to tell a man that not only had his wife and two kids died in a car accident, but as best we could tell the body of his nine year old daughter had been dragged from the wreck by coyotes". He gestured to a picture of a smiling girl with long brown hair.
"You mean dragged and eaten", Stiles murmured. His mind still replaying Baby's confession. Baby was silent next to him.
"We didn't find the car until three days after the crash. They had driven off the road into a pretty deep ravine. Two bodies that were still in the car were covered by bites and slashes".
"So you're thinking bites and claw marks, probably a werewolf attack?"
"Maybe".
"But coyotes scavenge right, count they have left the bites and scratches?"
"Absolutely", the sheriff nodded. "But guess which night the accident occurred on?"
"The night of a full moon", Stiles sighed.
Baby leaned over his shoulder to glance at the file. "Wait", he murmured. "Was the body of the eldest girl ever found? Any trace?"
"No. Nothing". Baby frowned and reached out to pull the file closer to him. There was a picture there of the family. Man, woman and two girls.
"The oldest girl looks nothing like her parents. Was she adopted?" He asked.
"Yeah. She was adopted as a baby. Why?"
"Just look at where the bodies are", Baby gestured to the crime scene photos. "If coyotes wanted to drag a body away, why wouldn't they go for the youngest? More baby fat, easier to move. She's not hindered by a seatbelt or anything. It makes no sense".
"Wait", Stiles interrupted. "What are you getting at?"
Baby inhaled. "I don't know much but I do know about supernatural creatures and their society. It is not uncommon for a child from supernatural parentage to be accidentally placed with a normal family. My sister used to work with hunters who would track down these families and either remove the child to stop them from causing harm, or educate the parents. It's a pretty big thing in Europe. I'm surprised the argents haven't done anything here since there seems to be a lot of people not knowing they are supernatural".
"Like Lydia", stiles added.
"Exactly".
"Hang on", The sheriff held up a hand. "Are you saying that you think that the girl who's body went missing, that you think she's a supernatural?"
"Yeah", Baby stated. "Look at the bite marks. They're small. A child werewolf couldn't hope to cause this much damage if they attacked the car and these are too small for an adult. But if she was in the car and the full moon caused her to turn, then that would explain everything. She couldn't have known what was going on or been able to control herself".
"If that's the case, where is she now?"
Baby shrugged. "Probably still in Wolf form in the woods. With no one to teach her, she wouldn't know how to turn back".

I will go more into Baby's past as the book goes on.
