"The offing was barred. Overcast slumber seemed to lead under an immense sky, leading into darkness", a woman read out as she walked into the class room. "This is the last line to the first book we are going to read. This is also the last text you will receive in this class". She was a young and slim woman with caramel curls. Baby thought that she was slightly weird.
It was English and Baby was stuck sitting behind the boy with the amazing smell. It was just his luck. Of course the boy was going to be in this class, along with his werewolf, hunter and banshee friends. It made Baby want to bang his head on the table. Instead, he just sank low in his seat, aiming to attract as little attention as possible.
"Baby Spencer?" Ms Blake was calling out the register. That threw his plan out the window. "It says here that you're new. Why are you in this class?"
"Um advanced classes?" Baby answered, feeling everyone's eyes on him. "I came from England. So I'm a bit ahead in some subjects".
A few of the girls tittered, whispering in delight at his accent. Baby pulled his hood over his head and tried not to groan.
"Well, don't disappoint me or you may have to rejoin lower classes", she sternly warned before setting them to work. The werewolf, who was apparently called McCall, was called out. Baby raised an eyebrow. Things seemed exciting.
"Hey Lydia," the boy was talking to the red headed banshee girl. Baby continued writing, not making any effort not to evesdrop. To him, they were practically shouting, it was just part of having vampire hearing. "Where did you get that?" He pointed to the bandage on her ankle.
"Prada bit me", she hummed, clearly not interested. She flicked a strand of hair over her shoulder and noted something down in her book.
"Your dog?"
"No my designer hand bag, yes my dog". There was that scent of sarcasm. It smelt similar to a sweet and sour sweet. Bitter but not horrible. It was also mixed with irritation, Lydia obviously not happy that the conversation was still going.
"Has it ever bitten you before?" The boy was more agitated, clearly thinking something. He leant closer to her. "So what if it's the same thing as the deer. You know how animals act weird before and earthquake or something. Maybe it means something's coming".
"What do you say about three? Once twice", a bang cut off the rest of Lydia's sentence.
A bird had hit the window, leaving a blood stain on the glass. Baby sat up, staring out the window in horror at the sudden noise. Through the glass a large swarm of black birds could be seen, and they were heading straight for the windows. Ms Blake, walked up to the glass as another bird hit. Then another.
"Get Down!" She screamed.
The glass shattered and soon the classroom was filled full of screaming students as the birds broke in, scratching and pecking anything they came into contact with.
Baby ducked, burying his body into a ball as bird claws scraped at his skin. Of course, due to vampire hardness, his skin did not break. The blood was a different matter though. Every student was scratched, their blood exposed to the air. A concoction of smells filled the room, awaking his hunger. Baby bit down on his lip, feeling his vampire fangs hardening and his eyes glowing. He hurried his face into his knees and covered his head with his hands, containing himself more than protection.
Finally the attacks stopped and all the birds lay dead across the floor. The room was trashed. Feathers littered everything along and blood was sprayed in streaks from where the birds had impaled themselves on objects. One had bashed it's brains out on Baby's desk, it's blood coating his workbook. Slowly, cautiously, the students began to stand up. Baby remained shaking under his desk. He wanted to bite, to feed. It was all too much for him, too overwhelming.
A hand fell on his shoulder making him jump. "Hey are you okay?" it was the boy with the appetising smell. Baby could barely contain himself from reaching out and sinking his teeth into the boy's pale delicious flesh. The mere thought made him lick his lips. "Do you need some help?"
"Get away from me!" Baby shrieked, his panic rising. He pushed the boy hard enough that he stumbled back. Scrambling back, he pulled himself to his feet and fled the classroom.
"Stiles are you okay?" Baby heard a voice ask as he entered the corridor. So that was the boy's name. Stiles. For a moment Baby wanted to stop and apologies but he needed to feed first. Speeding up, he rounded the corner and left the school.
"Allison did you see that?" Stiles' voice was shocked. "His eyes glowed silver".
