Prologue
Hope Solo was just having a normal day in her house. She was cleaning up her kitchen when she heard her dog barking outside. She rolled her eyes, figuring he had seen a squirrel. However, the dog didn't stop.
She went opened the door and was about to yell at it when she saw something lying in the snow covered grass. She gasped, realizing it was a girl. She sprinted over to her and gently picked her up. She checked for a pulse and checked her breathing. While he breaths seemed labored, she was indeed alive.
Hope brought her inside. She gently laid her on the couch and covered her with a heated blanket. She began preparing some soup she found in the cabinet.
Soon after the soup was done she saw the girl sit up. "Where am I?"
Hope sat next to her. "You're at my house. How ya feeling kid?"
"Like I've been hit by a truck."
Hope gave her a small smile. She went into the kitchen and grabbed a bowl of soup and some hot tea. The girl smiled at her gratefully. Hope watched as she slowly ate and drank the dishes clean. "What's your name?" Hope asked.
"Olivia," the girl replied quite raspy.
Hope put a hand up to the Olivia's forehead. Despite the fact that she had been in the snow a few minutes earlier, she was extremely warm. "I think you have a fever," Hope said. "How did you get out there?"
Olivia shivered. "I uh, would rather not talk about it," she sighed.
Hope rubbed her back. "It's alright kid, you don't have to tell me until you're ready."
"Thanks."
Hope nodded. Soon enough Olivia was asleep. Hope picked her up and carried her to the guest room. After she gently laid her in bed, she realized that the young girl was coughing. Hope ran downstairs and grabbed some cough drops and water. She came back upstairs to find Olivia sitting up, coughing a storm.
She rubbed her back. "Hey, it's okay," Hope said. "Take one of these."
She handed her a cough drop. "Thank you."
"No problem kid."
Hope's smile faded when she looked back at Olivia. Her face was pale and tear streaked. She wrapped her arms around the girl. "Hey, Olivia, it's okay, don't worry."
"My parents don't want me."
"What?"
"They kicked me out when I was nine. I stayed away from shelters and tried to survive. I've hurt a lot of people Hope, all for my selfish survival."
Hope held the girl close. "It's okay, none of that is going to happen anymore, I promise. You can live with me, I'll take care of you."
"You mean it?"
"I mean it. You can be Olivia Solo."
"Thank you Hope."
"No problem, what's your middle name?"
"Mia, my dad, before he died, loved soccer. He used to play with me all the time. He got cancer when I was seven. A little after he died was when she kicked me out, because my step dad didn't want me."
"That's awful, but you're dad sounds like a great guy. I bet we would've gotten along."
"I'm sure you would've."
"Anyways, that's a pretty name, I think it flows nicely, Olivia Mia Solo."
Olivia smiled brightly at Hope, before sneezing. Hope pressed her hand to her forehead. "Get some rest," she said gently. "You'll feel better in the morning."
Olivia nodded, before finally drifting off.
