Chapter Twenty Nine: Screen Tests

*******Kit's POV*******

"Kit!" Somebody yelled as I came down the escalator.

I looked down below me and saw Mandy, Kris, and Mairette waiting for me. Mandy was bouncing around excitedly and yelling my name again. When I got to the bottom of the escalator, she pulled me into her arms and hugged me tight.

"I missed you!" She all but yelled in my ear.

"You missed me so much that you're trying to strangle the life out of me?" I asked, trying to push her back.

"Oh! Sorry!" she said, finally releasing me. "But yes, I missed you that much."

"I missed you too, babe," I told her, squeezing her arm. I turned to the other two. "It's good to see you both again. I'm looking forward to getting to spend more than a few hours with you like when you guys were docked in Charleston."

"We can't wait, either!" Mairette said, giving me a quick hug. "All three of us have been looking forward to you getting here."

"Well if everybody else is hugging," Kris said, also giving me a quick hug. "I don't want to be left out."

"The hugs probably should have waited until after I've had a shower," I said, brushing my hands down the front of my shirt. "I've been on planes for over 24 hours and I feel gross. Especially my face."

"Well then let's get you a shower," Mandy said. "Because we've got things to do."

"Things?" I asked her as we started towards the baggage area. "What kind of things?"

"We all have to do screen tests for the show," Kris said from where she and Mairette were walking behind me.

"Yeah, they want to make sure that we don't look washed out," Mairette added.

"Or that our voices aren't so annoying on camera that we have to be dubbed over," Mandy said with a laugh.

"Not a one of you know what screen tests are for, do you?" I asked them, laughing too.

"Nope. No idea," Kris said, making us all laugh again.

"So where are we going?" I ask, once we're in a car which has a private driver. Fancy. And weird.

"We're going to the condo that Hobi, Jungkook, and Mairette rented this week until they can find a place of their own," Mandy told me. "It's in Hannam The Hill, which is where everybody will be living for the duration of the show, so the place where our screen tests are is close enough to walk."

"The guys have a place there that they all share, but rarely use, too," Mairette told me. "They only use it if it gets late and they're close and don't want to go back to their own places."

"Oh. Wow," I said as I tightened my seatbelt a little because the private driver was driving like an insane person. "That sounds fancy."

"Oh it is fancy," Kris said. "Not old school Charleston fancy, but new world, lots of clean lines, lots of white, and no dust anywhere fancy."

"So...don't touch anything," I say with a laugh. "Got it."

"That's pretty much what we've all been doing," Mandy says. "It's kind of annoying, really. I just want to break into somebody else's home and mess up their medicine cabinet, which I'm sure is all organized in alphabetical order. By a maid, no doubt."

"Can I help?" I ask her, making the other three laugh.

After I was clean, I walked out of the most elaborate bathroom that I had ever seen. Mairette had to show me how to work the shower, because there were buttons everywhere and I had no idea what any of them did. I was used to a normal shower, with hot and cold faucets and that was it.

"Ready to go?" Mandy asked.

I nodded and we all left to walk down to the condo where the show would be shot so that we could do our screen tests.

"Who's going first?" The production assistant asked us.

"Kit, you go first," Mandy said, pushing me forward a little.

"What? Why me?" I asked with a frown.

"We took a vote and you lost?" Mandy offered as an explanation.

"Well then you can all just bite me," I said, rolling my eyes as I walked over to sit in the chair. I looked at the assistant behind the camera. "What am I supposed to say?"

"Whatever you want is fine. Just introduce yourself or something like that," he told me.

I cleared my throat, looked at the other three girls, then smirked and looked right at the camera.

"Hi. My name is Mandy. I enjoy all kinds of food, but unfortunately, I'm allergic to all of them. All food. I basically just drink water and eat gummy bears and celery, and even that could probably make me go into anaphylactic shock at any moment. I risk my life any time something passes my lips. "

"You're fucking hilarious," Mandy said, walking over and pushing me out off the chair. "Move. It's my turn."

"You're the one that made me go first, bitch," I said with a laugh.

Mandy narrowed her eyes at the camera and I knew that she was about to get me back.

"Hi. My name is Kit. Yes, that's a nickname. No, I will not tell you my real name. No it's not Kitten, and no, you absolutely can not call me that. I like to say no when people invite me to things, then sit around and pout because everybody is out having fun without me. Sarcasm is about 97% of my personality. I am one of those people who only need 3 hours of sleep a night, so I'm pretty much always awake, and I like to bug my friends, who are trying to sleep like normal people, at all hours of the night."

"Oh fuck off," I said with a laugh.

"My turn!" Kris said as she took Mandy's place.

"Hold on," the assistant said as he adjusted the camera a little. "Okay, go."

"Hi, my name is Mairette. I like long walks on the beach, as long as I don't actually have to touch the water. I enjoy all kinds of music, as long as I get to pick it, because other people have terrible taste. I have, in the past, thought about ripping my own arm off to beat one of my students to death with it. I'm afraid of airplanes, so I take boats, cars, and trains everywhere."

"Well that's just rude," Mairette said, crossing her arms. "What did I do to you? And you know that I don't like planes because my parents died in a plane crash."

"Next," the assistant said.

After replacing Kris on the chair, Mairette sat there for a moment. She looked like she was thinking, which couldn't be good.

"Hi. I'm Kristina, but I go by Kris. I love my friends, but when I tell them that in our group chat, I go back 5 minutes later and delete it so that there's no proof of it. If I'm being honest, I need my friends. I would die without them. I just don't like to tell them that, that way they're always wondering if I really want them around or not."

"Hey!" Kris said. "What the hell?"

"Payback's a bitch," Mairette said with a shrug.

"And so are you!" Kris said with a laugh.

"Okay, I need everybody to go one more time."

Mairette stayed where she was to go again.

"Hi, my name is Kris. I love cereal. And I mean I really LOVE cereal. I could eat nothing but cereal for the rest of my life and be perfectly happy about it. I also love to talk about cereal and discuss the many good points of each brand. People tend to think that I'm spoiled, but I'm really not. As long as people do what I want and give me everything that I ask for, I like to keep the peace. Nope. I'm not spoiled at all."

Mandy laughed as she walked over to take her place.

"Hi, my name is Kit. I hate the color yellow. When I become supreme leader of the world, my first act will be decommissioning yellow as a color. I love water. Drinking it, swimming in it, taking baths in it for 3 or 4 hours at a time even when other people have to use the restroom. I have a really good memory. I remember everything. You can say or do something and ten years later, I will call you out on it, if you say something against what you said before. My friends can say something like 'I don't like corndogs." And I will say 'That's not what you said on April 4th, 2012. It's really annoying."

Kris took her place and looked at the camera.

"Hi, my name is Mairette. Nobody can pronounce my name. I usually have to sound it out for them several times, and even then, it doesn't always work. I love sushi, but I am deathly allergic to avocados, so when I go and get sushi, the poor people who roll it have to deep clean their station before making mine. Does this stop me from going to get sushi every other day? Nope. Not even a little bit. Avocados just need to die. They look like they taste like grass, anyway. "

Finally, it was my turn again. Kris walked back over to me, but I stood there for a moment, trying to think of what to say. It had to be about Mandy, because she was the only one that I knew enough about. Finally, I sat down in the chair.

"Hi, my name is Mandy. I don't like to be touched. Seriously. Try and touch me and the only touch that you're going to get is my fist in your throat. That being said, people tend to think that I'm scary, but really, I'm a big softy. I will defend my friends to the ends of the earth, because they are my true soulmates and I will do absolutely anything for them. I tend to sleep for ten hours at a time, and I don't like when people try to wake me up. I will bite you. "

The production assistant behind the camera was laughing at us. "This show is going to be hilarious. You all actually like each other, though, right?"
