May the Best Friend Win

Ben was sitting on the couch, folding some of Emma's onesies, when Tucker came in, a little anxious about talking to Ben.

"Hey, Ben-" But Ben wasn't having it. He was mad, and was going to make Tucker very aware of it.

"Do not need to have this conversation. I'm cool. She picked you. Winner, loser. I get it. Don't understand it. But I get it." Tucker sighed. He was getting frustrated with this. Ben had been acting like this ever since Ava had declared that she wanted to go out with him.

"I just wanted to make sure if you were okay if Ava came by the apartment later." He said, trying not to lose his temper.

"No issues whatsoever." Ben told him, looking up at him, having already lost his temper. "Mainly because I'll be at Danny's press conference. Oh, and lucky you... Mom will have Emma, so the place is totally yours." Finally, Tucker was fed up with him.

"What is your problem? I thought you said you were cool with this." Ben looked at him like he was the crazy one.

"I am cool. This is me being cool." Tucker took that as a sign to stop trying to argue, then smirked, thinking back to the actual question he had wanted to ask.

"Would you mind if I borrowed some of that new cologne..."

"I'm not that cool!" Ben told him harshly, throwing the onesie in his hand down on the coffee table, as though Tucker had just insulted him in the worst way possible.

"Wheeler?" Riley walked into the locker room at the hockey rink, where Brooke was helping him get prepared for his interview. "Wow! You look amazing." Brooke tucked a piece of hair behind her ear, smirking.

"Well, he might've had a hand in the choice of outfit." Danny chuckled, messing up her hair to get her to be quiet, then looked to Riley, adjusting his jacket a bit.

"What do you think? Does this say sports professional?" Riley made a jokey, thinking face.

"That, or superhero in disguise." They both chuckled again, and she smiled a genuine smile. "You're gonna be so great." Danny smiled back, and thought that this just might be his opportunity to actually tell her how he felt.

"Thanks." He then took a deep breath, preparing himself a bit. "And, Riley, I don't know if I've ever said this before... I'm really grateful to have you in my life." Once again, he had chickened out. "I don't know what I'd do without you." Riley smiled, a little flattered by Danny's word, and she patted his arm.

"Aw. Then let's hope you never have to find out." She chuckled, just as Ben came hurrying in.

"Hey, am I late?" He asked, looking around. "Did I miss anything?" Riley smiled at him, bouncing up and down a little excitedly.

"Hey, perfect timing. I think he's up next." And that's what set off Danny's anxiety all over again as he looked around for an escape.

"Next? Oh! Is it hot in here?" He began panting, his chest heaving as Brooke put one hand on his chest and the other on his arm, pushing him to sit on the bench behind him. "I think I'm gonna sit down."

"Danny, take a breather." Brooke told him, Riley patting his shoulder.

"You're gonna be fine." That was when Danny took a real look around, panicking even more.

"Where's Tucker?" Ben scoffed, rolling his eyes at the very mention of Tucker.

"Where do you think he is? Busy starring in "The Tucker Show"." Danny started panicking again. He didn't know that not all of his friends were here!

"You invited him like I asked you to?" Ben scoffed like that was the most ridiculous thing in the world.

"No. It's not like he'd come anyways. He's too busy with Ava." Danny jumped at that, furious with Ben. He knew that this would happen!

"Dude. What is the matter with you?" He demanded. "This is exactly what I told you would happen. You guys are a team. And being on a team means you have each other's back. That no matter how you're playing, someone's always there to celebrate your wins and avenge your losses. Without a team, you're just some loser out there alone on the ice. And that's not how you play hockey. Or life." That was when he realized he was on camera, and the interviewer was filming him. "Go Rangers. Yeah. Yeah. Go Rangers! Woo." The camera guy walked away, and Riley threw her arms around Danny happily.

"Oh my God. Danny, you were amazing. You did it." Danny was stunned, and a little dizzy. He could hardly believe it!

"I did? Yeah. I did. Thank you." He suddenly kissed her, forgetting that they were "just friends", just as the reporter called him over.

"Wheeler, over here."

"Yeah!" Danny rushed over, smiling broadly, Ben chuckling as Riley stood there, completely starstruck.

"Well, that was rousing. I'll say."

"You can say that again." Brooke told him, her eyes big and wide. She'd have a talk with Danny later about that.

"Just like we practiced." Riley choked out, as Ben realized what he needed to do. He realized that Danny was right.

"I should go. I feel like I've been playing goalie against my own team." Both women gave him looks, and he scoffed again. "Oh, what? He's the only one who can use sports analogies? Pfft!"

Ben went back to the apartment and knocked on the door, a little anxious about talking to Tucker, who of course answered the door, also a little confused. He didn't seem mad anymore either.

"Ben? Did you forget your key?" He asked, and Ben shook his head, forcing a good-hearted smile.

"I didn't want to barge in on whatever might or might not be happening." Tucker crossed his arms, listening. "I just wanted to tell you that you deserve a great girl and an even better friend." Tucker smiled, his mind racing.

"Thanks, man. But about that." he looked back to Ava, giving her a "one-second" sign, before shutting the door with him and Ben in the hallway, and began to flip out. "Okay! That girl is crazy! You have got to help me, man! She has not stopped talking since she got here! I think I am deaf in one ear!" Ben already started formulating a plan.

"All right, here's what we'll do. We just have to turn her off of you..." Tucker scoffed.

"Oh, please. Like that's possible." But Ben was already listing the reasons to turn Ava off of Tucker as the elevator dinged behind him.

"Felon. Gun nut. Head lice. Cult."

"Hey, guys." Ben smiled at the voice, pointing behind him.

"Danny?"

"Sold!" Danny looked at the two of them, completely confused, but happy to see them as friends again.

"Everything good out here?" Tucker nodded as the two of them pushed Danny into the apartment.

"Oh, it's about to be. Okay, come here. Okay." They opened the door, and Tucker smiled at Ava. "Ava, hey. This is Ben's brother, Danny Wheeler. New York Ranger." She jumped up at once, excited.

"Oh my God, I love hockey! I could talk about it for hours." Tucker chuckled.

"I figured." He pushed Danny towards her, talking to him as Ben helped. "Okay. Okay, yeah. If you could just keep her company while we go run out for more..." He looked to Ben.

"Beer?" Ben suggested.

"Beer sounds great." Danny sighed, knowing what they were doing, but he just shrugged.

"Sure, no problem." And they both left, laughing happily. Friends at last.
