Chapter 9 - No Privacy

Monday morning had somehow rolled around.  I wasn't looking forward to it.  A dark bruise had now covered almost the whole right side of my face. This is gonna take a ton of concealer.

Since Saturday, I had gained another 100k followers and had two more articles written about me. Can't people just mind their own business? The media is creating this whole theory based on one video. There's not even anything else to base their assumptions on... except my and Shawn's Snapchat stories.

Luckily I had changed my settings to only receive messages from my friends, but I can still see who took screenshots.

On a brighter note, I'm leaving with Shawn in three weeks to start his tour! Excitement couldn't even come close to what I was feeling. I've never been outside of North America, so the nerves were also hitting me.

"Sis, you gotta be looking your best when you go to school, not like a homeless crack addict." Bailey crossed her arms when she saw me layering on the concealer, foundation, and any other product I could get my hands on, onto my bruise.

"Bay, I can't go to school looking like I got beat up," I knew this wasn't going to be a fight I would win.

"You gotta wear your injuries proudly! Faye messed you up, so let the world know."

"But I kissed her boyfriend!"

"Technically ex boyfriend, and he kissed you first."  She shrugged her shoulders and began rummaging through my closet.

"What are you doing?!"  My mind started to wander back to that night.  I could still feel the warmth and pressure of his lips on mine. It was as if I had kissed a ghost. It all seemed like a distant memory.

"I'm looking for a bomb outfit for you!" Bailey's voice was a little muffled.

"Hey, it's fine."

"No it's not.  No sister of mine is going to be seen looking how you look right now."

I threw up my hands in surrender.  "I give up.  Do with me as you wish."  Even though I couldn't see it, I knew she was grinning.  I just hoped not evilly.

A few minutes later, she appeared with three different outfits. "Ok, I'll let you choose between these."

"It's too cold to wear any of these," I chuckled at the summer outfits she handed to me.

"I know that silly. Which is why I also have leggings and jackets to match!"

My red high waist shorts caught my attention.  I took them off Bailey's arm, along with some black leggings. She handed me a gray tie-dyed crop top and a lilac bomber jacket. "Try these on with the shorts."

I did as I was told and quickly changed. When I was finished, she clapped her hands with glee and squealed. "My masterpiece!"

The person staring back at me in the mirror looked pretty stylish. "Wow, thanks Bailey!"

"It's nothing," she waved her hands. "Thanks to you, I got 50k Instagram followers this past weekend."

"Oh, guilty by association I guess. You're my sister so that makes sense. Plus Shawn follows you." I realized that my mistakes will have repercussions on my family as well as myself.

"Hey I'm not complaining, isn't every girl's dream to be famous?" She giggled and skipped toward the door. "One more suggestion, don't cover up the bruise, just work around it."

"Yes ma'am," I saluted and turned back to my mirror.

I wiped off the excess concealer and foundation on my cheek and reapplied just enough around the area to evenly blend. Bailey's right, I need to wear my scars proudly.

A few minutes later, Bailey reappeared in my room with a wide grin on her face. "You almost ready? Shawn's picking us up in 10 minutes."

"Wait what?" I dropped my eyeshadow brush.

"You heard me. I texted Shawn and asked him if he could drive us to school today."

"Bailey you can't just ask people for rides. There's something called gas and it costs money."

"But Shawn's dropping off Aaliyah anyway, and our schools are just down the street from each other."

I sighed and shook my head, "You are going to be the death of me child."

"And that's why you love meeee," she sang and danced around my room.

•••

"Thank you again for driving me and Bailey to school," I thanked Shawn for the third time.

"Of course!  It was my pleasure. Plus I'm sure Aaliyah enjoyed the company."

We pulled into our school's parking lot. There were a few photographers waiting around to snap some pictures.  "Oh great," I sighed and shook my head.

"Hey, we can do this." Shawn took my hand in his and kissed it. "I mean it's not like they're a bunch of wolves... well maybe they are but that's beside the point."

I chuckled and nodded in response. I gathered up my stuff and backpack and opened the car door. Outwardly I was cool and composed, but inwardly I felt like a train wreck.

There was a peaceful lull as Shawn and I were walking to the building, but that quickly ended when the paparazzi caught sight of us.

"SHAWN OVER HERE!!! LILY OVER HERE!!" Cameras began flashing as the three photographers came barreling for us. I gulped in a big breath of air and steeled myself.

Shawn smiled, "Hi guys. What can I do for you?"

"Is it true you and Lily are dating?"

"How long have you two been together?"

"Why all the secrecy?"

The questions all came in a flurry that made my head hurt. All I wanted was to go about my business quietly. Shawn and I weren't even dating and people go crazy, just imagine what it would be like if we actually were! I probably wouldn't even be able to leave my house.

"Um, I think there may be some misunderstanding here, Lily and I are not dating. I don't know if you have some information that I don't know of, but we're just really close friends."  Shawn tried to explain but the message didn't seem to get through.

"No no, there was a video that showed you guys kissing very passionately. How can you guys not be dating?!" One of the ladies smiled and snapped an up close picture of me and Shawn holding hands.

"You two belong together! There's so much chemistry!" Someone else added.

"There will be no more questions. Please excuse us, we have to get to class now." Shawn started directing me towards the school.

A man stepped in front of us which blocked our movement.  "Just a few more questions please!"

"No, we're going to be late, I'm sorry." I could tell Shawn was getting irritated.

"Please Shawn!""

"Shawn wait!"

"A couple more questions!"

"Alright alright, break it up!" Finally the principle and two security guards arrived on the scene.

"Thanks Mr. Johnson," I gave him a weak smile.

"Of course of course." He pursed his lips and motioned for the security guards to escort us into the building.

When we stepped inside, it seemed as if the entire school was waiting for us. I awkwardly pulled my hand out of Shawn's and twisted the hem of my shirt.

Security walked us to our first class and made sure we were settled before leaving. The rest of the school rushed into their classes as the bell rang.

When Faye walked in, she made eye contact with Shawn for a minute, then looked away. She turned her gaze to me and flipped me off.

"Miss. Quentin, please refrain from obscene gestures in my class."  Ms. Parker crossed her arms and scowled.

"Aw Lily, what happened to your face? I bet whoever hit you had a good reason." Faye taunted as she slid into the seat behind me.

I didn't say anything, if I did I wouldn't know when to stop. Shawn glanced back at her and shook his head. I heard her heave a sigh.

Ms. Parker began talking, "Today class, we're going to talk about the brain..."

Bleh, boring lecture here we come. I felt a poke in my back and a note was placed on my desk. I knew only trouble would come from it so I left it alone.

"Read it." Faye's demanding voice hissed in my ear.

I slowly reached for the folded piece of paper. My heart was pounding as I unfolded it. Inside was written four words...
