Chapter 60 - Welcome Darcy
"Someone find out if the general hospital has a maternity ward!!" My mom shouted as soon as she came into the room with Shawn.
I had been sitting on the edge of the bed while he ran to get her. The contractions were sporadic and weren't close together yet.
Bailey followed my mom and smiled at me, "You're a strong, independent woman. You've got this."
"Thanks Bailey."
"Sweetie," my mom turned to my sister. "Why don't you go find Jack."
No! She can't go with him!! Not after what I just witnessed!!!
"Mom," I held up my hand. "Don't let her go with him."
"Why not sugar?"
"Jack, he threatened me."
She stared at me for a minute before answering. "He wouldn't do something like that. You probably misread his actions."
"You don't understand! He threatened me because we kissed back when I was in his PE class at school."
"What?!" Now I had her full attention.
"Find Teddy, he recorded it." I stopped talking as another contraction hit me, this one stronger than the last.
Shawn nodded to confirm what I said. "It's true, I saw the video."
Both she and Bailey had shocked expressions. The former's turned to anger while the latter's turned to something between amusement and mischief.
"Was he a good kisser?" My sister asked.
"I'm not answering that."
"Bailey, that is inappropriate at a time like this. You need to learn when to speak and when to stay silent." Our mom glared at her.
Shawn left the room and came back a few moments later with Vivian. She nodded to my family and addressed me. "Lily, we need to start timing your contractions so we know when a good time to admit you to the hospital is."
I nodded and stood up. There was no pain between contractions, so I had no problem walking around. My mom was racking her brain, trying to figure out what to do with her boyfriend. She finally decided to bring Bailey along to the hospital and deal with him later.
A contraction hit me and I groaned through it. These were like period cramps times ten. Vivian started a timer on her phone. Once the contraction was over, she lapped the timer and we all waited for the next one.
The hospital was about 20 minutes away from our hotel, which was great. I came to a consensus with my mom and Vivian. At 7 minutes apart, they would take me to the hospital.
Shawn's phone rang and he answered it. I could only hear his side of the conversation, but he didn't sound happy. After he got off the phone, he threw the device onto the bed.
"Andrew says I have to do an interview today. And before you ask, he said I have to be there since it's regarding the album."
Another contraction hit me. I tried to talk through it as best I could, but was unable to get more than a few words out. Vivian looked at the timer and whistled. "Go Shawn. You better be back soon. She's about 8 minutes apart."
He nodded and kissed my forehead. I whimpered and looked up at him, "Promise me you'll be there. I'm scared."
"I promise I'll be by your side when our daughter is born. I would never leave you."
"I love you Shawn."
"I love you too Lily."
He gave me one last kiss and then left the room. I sighed and started packing a bag to take with me to the hospital. Since Darcy was going to be born premature, I didn't need to take any of the newborn clothes. I was so glad some fans bought preemie onesies.
No one expected the birth to be this early, and none of us had done anything to prepare. Shawn and I wanted the baby to be born back in Toronto, but obviously that wasn't going to happen anymore. At least she'll have dual citizenship.
I chose one of the pink onesies that had little bundles of flowers scattered over the fabric. Along with that, I packed some socks, even though it was the middle of humid July, a tiny beanie, and a few blankets.
My contractions were coming closer together now and I finally hit the 7 minute mark. My mom, Bailey, and Vivian gathered some of their belongings and we headed out to one of the vans. Meanwhile, my mom shot Jack a text, telling him that she would be gone all day having a girls day.
The drive to the hospital felt like a million years. I'd gone through three rounds of contractions by the time we'd gotten to our parking space. Vivian and my mom supported me as I walked and Bailey carried my bag.
When we got inside, I was checked in and send back to get situated. Since no one under 18 and non family members were not allowed in the delivery rooms, Vivian and Bailey sat out in the waiting room together.
It had been almost an hour since Shawn left for his interview. Hopefully he'd be done soon so we could be together. Not saying my mom wasn't comforting, but there was a difference between her and my boyfriend.
My contractions began to increase in pain and length, and decrease in space between. I was completely unable to talk through each one and had to grab on to something to help. Each contraction was now about 4 minutes apart. I was dilated to 5 centimeters and wasn't allowed to push until at the very least 8.
I groaned through a contraction and dug my head into the pillow. I had decided long ago that I wanted to birth my daughter naturally, without an epidural, but I was kind of regretting my choice now. My mom stood by my side and tried her best to soothe me.
What seemed like days later, more like a few hours, I was finally fully dilated. Shawn still hadn't shown up.
Where was he? I'm sure he didn't forget, right?
A doctor and two nurses waltzed into the room and got prepared.
"Hi Lily, I'm Dr. Jones, and this is nurse Polly and Mia."
I nodded and exhaled through tight lips. The nurses situated themselves in their spots and the doctor finished washing her hands.
My mom moved a loose strand of hair out it my face. Everything was starting to fade together in a mixture of pain and pressure. Shawn was still missing and it had been hours since he left.
At this point, I didn't know whether to be worried or angry. I knew interviews were out of his control, and I definitely wasn't mad at him. It's just that some people have no regard for others' personal lives.
I felt another contraction coming and Dr. Jones got ready to coach me through it. "Okay honey. We're going to take this nice and slow. I'm going to count and you're going to push."
Nurse Mia gave my hand a squeeze and nodded at the doctor. I got myself ready to push and waited for her signal. Once she started counting, I began pushing.
It hurt so bad. I felt like I was going to be ripped apart. After I stopped, it was nice to take a small break. Relatively quickly, another contraction made its way through my body.
"Again Lily! One two three PUSH!" The nurse placed a hand on my arm while I let out a scream and pushed.
Sweat dripped down the side of my face as I kept on pushing until the doctor told me to stop. "Where's Shawn? He said he would be here!" I grunted and gasped for breath.
My mom shook her head, "He'll be here."
I wanted to cry. Tears threatened to fall and I held my bottom lip between my teeth to keep it from wobbling.
A shadow fell across the door and someone burst into the room. A mop of brown curls and a familiar, comforting scent greeted me.
"SHAWN!!! YOU'RE HERE!!"
"Of course I am! I would never miss this. I'm sorry I was gone so long. That's a story for another time." He kissed my sweaty forehead and smiled at me.
"Alright Lily, I can see baby's head. Give me a big push when you're ready."
I grabbed on to my knees and pushed with everything I had in me. Now that Shawn was here, I felt like I could conquer the world.
Once I stopped, I panted and tried to catch my breath before doing little pushes as Dr. Jones instructed. I was so tired. Every muscle in my body ached and I was feeling slightly delirious.
After a few more big pushes, I let out one last push and felt all pressure and pain cease. It was over, she was born!
Shawn grinned at me and I relaxed into the pillows when we heard the high pitched cry of a baby.
"Congratulations Lily and Shawn on your beautiful daughter." Dr. Jones lifted her up as soon as she had wrapped her in a blanket.
Darcy was handed over to me and I began sobbing once I saw her little scrunched up face. She was everything I'd ever dreamed of and more. A pile of dark hair sat matted on her head and her tiny hands were balled up into fists as she cried.
"Hello Darcy Jade Mendes, welcome to our world!! We love you very much." Shawn and I smiled and kissed her forehead.
