Chapter 49 - On the Road Again
I collapsed in the worn leather chair that slumped in the corner of my and Shawn's hotel room. Today had been full of soundcheck and exploring and I was definitely ready for a break.
My feet were sore and my legs felt like jelly. The sugar in the smoothie I'd drank earlier was finally wearing off. Coffee sounded so good right now, but I had to keep reminding myself that caffeine wasn't good for the baby.
My phone buzzed in my pocket. It was a text from Bailey.
Bailey- So mom is currently out tonight with that guy she met on Tinder
Me- How long has she known him exactly?
Bailey- It's officially been 4 days as of today
Me- That woman does not need a man to prove her point to dad that she can live without him
Bailey- I know, but he is pretty hot. She showed me a picture of him. He looks about 10 years older than you
Me- Mom has become a cougar
Bailey- At least if things don't work out between you and Shawn, there's always this guy
Me- Shut up and goodbye
Bailey- 😘👋🏻
I rolled my eyes and put down my phone, I swear that child. A knock sounded on the door and I got up to see who it was. Teddy and Brian were standing outside with a giant chocolate cake.
"What's that for and can I have some?" I opened the door and motioned them inside.
"We got it cause it looked tasty, and of course you can." Teddy gently set down his prized possession on the table and began cutting thick slices.
The second he handed me my plate, I dug into the food. It was super moist and so delicious. I moaned and closed my eyes.
Teddy snickered at me. "I should probably tell Shawn that this cake can make you feel better than he can."
I stuck my tongue out at him and continued to eat in ecstasy. "Speaking of him, where is he?"
"He went out with Joshua to take some pictures before it's dark."
"Okay."
"How's your fam fam doing?"
"They're good. Bailey texted me earlier and said my mom is out on a date with her Tinder match tonight."
Teddy put down his cake, "No way! How long have they been talking?"
"Apparently only 4 days."
"Oh wow. Well, kudos to her for not staying down in the dumps about your dad."
"Yeah, but I don't understand why she had to pick someone so young. Bay said he looked about 10 years older than me."
Brian choked on his cake, "What did you say?"
"She's a cougar." I crossed my arms and sighed.
"Well obviously," Teddy turned to me, "No offense."
"No, I feel the same way."
The three of us ate the rest of our cake in silence. Shawn came back with a big grin on his face about 2 hours after the guys left. He held his hand behind his back and ran over to kiss me.
"What do you have there Mendes?"
"A little something for you." He pulled his hand from behind his back to reveal a small, flat box.
I raised an eyebrow and took the box from his outstretched hand. It was wrapped in green paper and was tied off with a purple bow. I removed all the wrapping and opened the box to reveal a small, rose gold necklace. The charm was in the shape of a rose.
"I love it, oh my gosh." I smiled widely and hugged him.
"I'm so glad. I saw it in a store window and knew you would like it."
"Will you help me put it on?"
"Of course!" He took the necklace from my hand as I turned around. Gently, he swept my hair away from my neck. The metal felt cool as he fastened the chain around me.
I turned around and planted a kiss on his lips. He deepened it and wrapped his arms around my waist to pull me in closer. I entwined my fingers in his hair and smiled against his lips.
"I love you darling." He whispered and pressed our foreheads together.
"I love you too."
The baby began kicking and I giggled. "Shawn, give me your hand."
He offered it up and I gently placed it on my belly. Once I felt a flutter, I looked up at him and he grinned widely. "Why hello little girl. I can't wait to meet you in person."
We crawled onto the queen sized bed and laid there talking and singing to our daughter for what felt like hours.

I woke to the sound of someone walking around our room. When I opened my eyes, Brian was conversing with Shawn. The former seemed to be agitated by something. I glanced at the clock and saw it read 8:26am.
It was way too early for this. For once in my life, I wasn't used to the time zone I was born into. In Toronto, it would be 11:26am and I would have started my day already.
"Oh Lily, you're awake. Brian said we'll only have a half day cause there's a basketball game going on tonight."
"Okay. Will that be enough time before tomorrow's performance?" I asked, wiping the sleep from my eyes.
"It should be. We did practice for weeks on end." He chuckled.
Brian shook his head. "Well at least you're not worried. I'm gonna get to the venue in an hour. I'll see you two there."
Shawn and I waved goodbye as he closed the door behind him. I got out of bed and walked over to the window. Shawn's shirt was oversized on me and the cool air from the air conditioning was making it puff up.
"Careful, you may give all of Portland a peep show."
I turned to face the dark haired boy who strode over to me. "You enjoyed the one I gave you last night."
"Yeah, but I'm your boyfriend. And your baby daddy."
He tucked a piece of hair behind my ear that had fallen in my face. I rested my arms on the little shelf my stomach provided and leaned against the wall.
"Come on, I'm going to go get some coffee. Even though you can't have any you should still come with me."
"Let me get changed first."
I went into the bathroom after I'd grabbed a change of clothes and came out looking like a well put together lazy person. My black sweatpants and blue shirt were borrowed from Shawn, and I had tied a bandana in my hair.
The two of us walked out of the hotel we were staying in and out onto the street. Shawn had heard of a coffee shop that apparently served really good drinks that wasn't too far from where we were staying.
My phone began ringing violently. The caller ID showed that it was Bailey, but she should be in school right now.
"Bailey? What's going on? Aren't you supposed to be in school?"
"Mom picked me up early. You will never believe what's happened!!"
"What?"
"So dad's whole affair stunt didn't start after he started working for Faye's mom."
"I don't understand what you mean." What could this possibly have to do with my mom, my sister and I?
"Dad dragged us all out to Canada cause he met her online!! They were having an affair when we were still in L.A."
What?!
My blood started to boil. "Wait wait wait. So you're telling me that dad moved us from California to Toronto because he was cheating on mom?!"
"YES!! That whore gave him a job so he'd have a reason to move here without raising any suspicions from us."
"And why is he telling us this now?"
"Because they're getting married."
