Chapter 3 - Life is Good
"Shawn, Faye! So you two are dating! That's totally awesome!" I tried my best to hold back the tears forming in the back of my eyes.
"Yeah, I should have told you sooner, I'm sorry!" Faye gave me a small smile.
"Oh it's fine. I'm glad to see you two are happy! I should head to my class."
I walked past them quickly. Only when I turned the corner did I feel comfortable with shedding tears.
Why didn't I expect this? He's hot, musical, sweet, you name it! But he was never mine to begin with. I was dreaming with a fantasy that could never happen.

"How was your first day of school?" My mom smiled at me.
"It was fine I guess."
"Just fine?"
"Yeah, I mean I don't really know what else to say mom."
I dragged myself upstairs and slammed the door of my room shut. I should have known, I shouldn't have been an idiot. OF COURSE HE'S NOT SINGLE!
I collapsed on my bed as my phone rang. I picked it up and answered the unknown number.
"Uh... hello?"
A familiar voice came over the speaker, "Hi is this Lily?"
"Yeah who's this?"
"It's Shawn, Faye gave me your number."
"O-oh, what's up?"
"I was wondering if you and your family would like to come over for dinner tomorrow night?"
"That sounds great, I'll ask my parents but I'm pretty sure they'll say yes."
"Sweet, I'll see you tomorrow at school!"
He hung up and I was left in silence. It hurt, it really hurt. I didn't have a problem with being just friends with him, I just wish I could be more than that. But we just met, so that couldn't have happened right away anyway.
My life was honestly pretty great, I got to go to high school with freaking Shawn Mendes, we were friends on the first day, I'm friends with his girlfriend, I live in a super nice house, I'm really lucky.
I guess I miss my home, L.A. is where I grew up and where my roots are. I miss the beach and my friends and the fresh air. Don't get me wrong, Toronto is beautiful, it's just not what I'm used to.
The sky was turning rosy as I closed my window on the chill air. Still not used to the cold this early. It'd usually be around 85 degrees this time of year.
Grabbing what little homework I had along with my phone and purple headphones, I bounced downstairs to our cluttered kitchen table.
"Hey mom, Shawn invited our family to have dinner at his house tomorrow."
"Shawn who, honey?"
"Shawn Mendes."
"I'm sorry, who's that again? His name sounds familiar."
"Only the hottest guy in the world!!" Bailey interjected. "Oh Lily can I come? What's he like? Is he as amazing in person?"
"Oh wait, is he that guy I took you to go see at The Forum last year?"
"Yeah mom. Bailey of course you can come, it's an invitation for our whole family. And yes, he is as amazing in person as he is on stage."
Bailey squealed in delight and enveloped me in a tight hug. "Can we go mom, can we can we can we???"
"That's fine with me. Lily you can tell Shawn that we'd be happy to accept his invitation."
My heart soared at her words and I joyfully anticipated the following day. Bailey ran around the house screaming about how she was going to meet Shawn Peter Raul Mendes in about 24 hours.

"Lily, over here!" Faye waved me over.
"Good morning Faye! What's up?"
"Did you happen to see Shawn? He didn't come to Mr. Espinosa's class this morning."
"Mmm no, I had Mr. Howell today anyway."
"Oh ok I ju-"
Just then, Shawn rushed into the room. His hair was flopping down in his face and all the papers in his notebook were threatening to fall out at any moment.
"MR. Mendes, what is the meaning of your tardiness this morning?" Our health teacher looked over sternly at him.
"I'm sorry Ms. Alexander, I stayed up late writing music. I must have overslept today." He shuffled quickly to the open seat in front of me.
"I don't want this to be a regular occurrence, it's still the beginning of the school term."
"Yes ma'am."
Ms. Alexander nodded in approval and continued teaching her boring lesson. Health class was one of my least favorite classes I had to take. It seemed pointless, I was healthy and I didn't like to be told what I can and can't eat.
Luckily the majority of the class felt the same way so it was easy to skip and have someone cover for you. Today three people were missing and our teacher didn't even notice.
I glanced over at Faye, who was yawning and twiddling her fingers. I smiled to myself and threw a small paper ball at her. She quietly looked around the room and her eyes landed on me.
She stuck her tongue out at me and I grinned. We were quite the pair. I guess I had gotten over the shock of her and Shawn dating. She seemed like such an awesome girl and I wanted them to be happy.
Besides, being friends with Shawn was pretty cool if you ask me. No worry of death threats or bad stuff in general.
I hope Faye doesn't receive any of that stuff, that would be horrible.
The bell rang and saved us from the misery of listening to Ms. Alexander drone on any longer. In a flash, everyone had packed up and rushed out the door.
Shawn traveled over to me and Faye, "What did I miss earlier?"
"Nothing much, I'll make a copy of the homework." Faye showed him the syllabus.
"I got moved to the other class for today so I can't help you with that stuff." I chucked.
"Oh by the way, what did your parents say?"
"They said yes, what time?"
"Whatcha guys talking about?" Faye smiled.
"Lily and her family are coming over tonight for dinner."
"Oh fun! I'll have to have you over sometime soon too Lily!!"
"Sounds great!" I smiled widely at her.
"Is 6 o'clock ok?" Shawn asked.
"Yep it's perfect."
The bell rang, warning us to quickly get to our next classes. We all scurried to the gymnasium for P.E. I'm really glad we have P.E. and then lunch, I definitely work up an appetite.
Our gym teacher, he told us to call him Jack, was absolutely gorgeous. He'd been absent yesterday so we all had free period. But man, he looked like a roman god.
His skin was bronzed which defined his muscular form. He had deep brown eyes and short curly brown hair. All in all, the definition of perfection.
Although, I would still chose Shawn any day. I mean have you seen Benito?! He's gorgeous too.
All the girls practically fainted when they entered the gym. Jack seemed to notice it too and smirked. "Welcome to physical education. It's a very important part of your schooling."
Even his voice is as sexy as he is.
He assigned us gym partners for the rest of the term. As he was calling out the names, I was anxious to see who I would get. "Ryder, Lily and Mendes, Shawn."
Shawn smiled at me and together we walked over to the mat waiting for us. Once everyone was assigned a partner, we all began warming up. Push-ups for five minutes were what we had to start out with.
I could only do one push-up to save my life. Shawn noticed me struggling and placed his hands on my hips. My breath hitched and I collapsed.
"S-s-sorry, I lost my balance."
"It's all good, here I'll help you."
I resumed my position and he guided my hips down in rhythm with the rest of my body. I was blushing bright red and goosebumps were beginning to form all along my back.
"And time! Now switch places." Jack called out to the class.
"Thank you for your help Shawn."
"You're welcome hun!"
