Chapter 10 - Salt on a Wound

Catch me outside hoe.

I balled up my fists and crumpled the note. We were literally best friends less than a week ago. Now because of what Shawn and I did, she wants to kill me.

I saw movement out of the corner of my eye and braced myself for whatever Faye was about to send my way. I heard a crack and a broken pencil was thrown on my desk.

"That'll be you if you ever touch Shawn again."

Finally I got fed up. "Why would you care what I do with your ex boyfriend?!"

That was the wrong thing to say. Faye made a sound that was in between a growl and a scream. "THIS IS ALL YOUR FAULT!!"

"Yeah I know I screwed up! I apologized and gave you space, what more do you want?!" I lost my temper and began shouting.

Ms. Parker was making her way over to us. "I hope there's a good explanation for this young ladies. Both of you to the principle's, now."

"Yes ma'am, sorry." I nodded my head and turned towards the door.

"I didn't say you could go." Faye raised an eyebrow.

I looked back at her and pursed my lips, "We have to go."

"I don't care what Ms. Parker says, we have a score to settle."

"MISS Quentin that is detention for you today and tomorrow as well!"

"Shut up Ms. Parker! I'm just trying to deal out JUSTICE!!" She lunged across the desk at me.

I dodged out of her way and she came crashing down on the floor. A scream tore through Ms. Parker when Faye's head connected with the edge of the desk.

Everyone jumped out of their seats and huddled around her. Ms. Parker, Shawn and I pushed through the growing crowd and stood in shock.

"Lily call 911 right now!" Shawn grabbed my arm.

I pushed through to my backpack and grabbed my phone. "Hello?"

"911 what's your emergency?"

"A girl smacked her head on a school desk and is bleeding and unconscious."

"What's your location?"

"Pine Ridge Secondary School, room 183."

"Okay, an ambulance is on the way to you right now."

"Thank you so much."

I ended the call and let out a shaky sigh, "She said the ambulance is on its way."

"Okay, thank you Lily," Ms. Parker started to bend down to inspect Faye.

"Shawn can I talk to you outside for a sec?"  I asked him.

"Yeah of course."  We stepped out of the classroom and closed the door.

"I just want to say I'm sorry."

"For what hun?"

"For all of this.  If I hadn't agreed to kiss you, Faye might have never gotten hurt, you guys wouldn't have broken up, and all the paparazzi wouldn't be chasing you around everywhere asking about us."  I wiped a tear that fell down my cheek.

"Oh my darling, none of this is your fault.  Come here," he wrapped his arms around me in an enveloping bear hug.  "You've got to understand something, I was planning to break up with Faye for a little while already, the paparazzi is always chasing me, and as for the kiss..."

Shawn trailed off for a moment and I saw an expression cross over his face.  Whatever it was passed quickly and resolve settled in its place.  In one swift movement, he cupped my face and planted his lips on mine.  "I wanted to kiss you."

The same warm shocking feeling that I felt the first time we kissed flooded through my veins once again.  "Shawn," I moaned his name and kissed him with a fire I'd never felt before.

Our lips parted and we exchanged smiles.  "No one compares to you."  Shawn whispered against my lips.

Shawn's POV:

What was I thinking!?  We can't be together and I know that.  I mean it could work... NO!  We could never survive the media and all the lies.  The most we could ever be is best friends.

There was faint snickering somewhere in the air.  When I turned around toward the door, there were phones out and wide grins on quite a few faces.

"Lily, we'd better go back inside.  The ambulance should be here soon."  I ran my fingers through my hair.

Lily's POV:

"Oh right, that's a good idea."  I blushed and awkwardly glanced at the group of teenagers that was slowly growing at the window.

Shawn and I walked to the door and pulled it open.  "Oooooooo you guys are dating!!!"

"No we're not guys, please stop.  And also delete the videos you took."  Shawn sighed wearily.

"Nah this is too much tea to delete!"  Carissa smirked and airdropped the video she took to the entire school.

"NO!!  What did you just do!!!"  I felt my phone vibrate.

"I just sent this to everyone."

There was a commotion at the end of the hall.  The paramedics had finally arrived. Shawn and I waved them down and they came running toward us with a gurney.

"Where is she?"

"She's in here. Her name is Faye."

The three of them nodded and we followed them inside the classroom.  Faye's limp body was a little creepy to be honest.  I'd never seen anyone in such a twisted position.

The paramedics asked us all to clear a path as they gently picked up Faye and placed her on the gurney.  One of the men went over to Ms. Parker and began asking her questions.

I felt responsible for all of this.  Faye and I would still be best friends and she would be awake and happy if it wasn't for me.  I truly hoped she would get better.  I wouldn't be able to live with myself if she died.

The paramedic who questioned Ms. Parker walked over to me.  "Hi, are you Lily Ryder?"

"Yeah I am."

"Can I ask what happened from your perspective?"

"Faye and I had gotten into an argument about a personal matter over the weekend.  Today in school she lunged at me and hit her head on the corner of the desk."

"Ah I see.  And had she shown previous forms of violence towards you?"

I blushed and didn't say anything for a moment, "... um, y-yes.  She slapped me which resulted in a bruise on the side of my face."

"Oh okay I see.  Thank you for your time."

I gave him a small smile and nodded.  Shawn came and stood next to me, "Hey can you come over later?  I think we need to discuss what the media is going to say about the new video I assume everyone received."

"Yeah definitely," I sighed for the millionth time today.  "I can only imagine what everyone will say this time."

"At least tour is gonna start next week, so traveling will keep us busy.  I know I keep saying this, but I'm really glad to have you join me Lily."

"Aww, I'm really glad to have this amazing opportunity!"

Faye was wheeled out with the paramedics and Ms. Parker tried her best to restore some sort of order back to the class.  After a few minutes with no result, she threw up her hands and let us talk amongst ourselves for the rest of the period.

Once the bell rang, everyone left the room chattering away.  Shawn and I were called to stay behind for a moment.

"Lily I'm not going to make you go to the office, but I do want to know what's going on between the three of you.  Why did Faye try to attack you?"

"It's a long story, but what it all comes down to is that I agreed to kiss her boyfriend at the time, and then they broke up that night."  I sheepishly stared at the floor and dragged my shoe along the linoleum.

"I see," Ms. Parker rubbed her chin.  "Well, you two may go.  Try not to go kissing other people's boyfriends."

I clinched my jaw and strained a smile.  "Won't happen again."

Shawn and I walked to our next class together avoiding all the staring eyes and whispers around us.  It was obvious everyone had watched the video.  If only there was someway to wipe everyone's memories.
