Chapter 1 - New Beginnings

Ok, new school, new friends, new life..... this really sucks. Why did we have to move here?
I removed my earbuds, pushed my dark hair away from my face and slumped out of my parents' car.

We had driven all the way from our small condo in L.A., to this massive house in Pickering, Ontario. Over 1,000 miles. And no friends.

"Lily... Lily? LILY TAYLOR RYDER!!!" My mom snapped me out of my daydream, "Come take your things up to your room please."

I rolled my eyes and grabbed a few small boxes. As I trudged up the steps, my mind kept wandering to Monday, what would school be like, would I make any friends, are the other students nice? Those questions kept pounding in my head.

At least I get my own room.

I opened my door and plopped down on the bed. For now, I wanted to forget everything that had happened for the past few months and just sink into blissful slumber.

As I was about to nod off, the constant thud of shoes echoing off the hard wood floor reminded me of the family I left downstairs. Picking myself up, I headed down to finish unloading my things.

Cautiously, I crept out bed. My bare feet touched the cold floor and I jumped back to the safety of my warm sheets.

It's going to take a while to get used to this.

I tried again, this time steeling myself for the cold shock. The sky was just starting to turn a light blush as I threw open the curtains. The three hour time difference was really doing a number on me.

Fumbling with the light switch, I flipped the lights on and shielded my eyes from the intense brightness. Hmmm, what to wear on the first day. Jeans or shorts? Dress or skirt?

After what felt like an eternity, I finally decided on a short light blue dress with gray leggings and a brown leather jacket. I pulled my hair back into a messy bun and packed my backpack.

A knock on my door made me jump, "Come in."

The door opened and dirty blonde head peeked through, "Are you excited for your last, first day of school?"

"Not really, I'm worried I won't make friends. Plus it's hard for me since I'm so shy." I pursed my lips.

"You'll make friends!!! Who'd NOT want to be your friend!? And about being shy, you're only shy till you get to know someone. If you were shy all the time, we wouldn't be friends!" My younger sister, Bailey, smiled at me.

I chuckled and ruffled her hair, "That's true Bay. Come on kiddo, let's go downstairs and have breakfast before I drive you to school."

"Good morning Lily, good morning Bailey. I made you girls some French toast," our mom waved towards the table. We hurried to our chairs and gobbled up the food.

The toast was so good, it melted in their mouths. In her kids eyes, she was the best cook in the whole world.

"I wonder if you'll see Shawn Mendes!! I can't believe you go to the same school as him!!!" Bailey squealed as she grabbed her and my backpacks and skipped outside.

"Haha I'd doubt it. He probably has bodyguards with him all the time and takes special classes," although I sounded indifferent, I was secretly hoping I would see him.

Ok, I took a shower, brushed my teeth, packed all my things and ate breakfast. Why am I feeling so nervous?

I took a deep breath and stepped out of the car. My nerves and heart were racing as I started walking towards the entrance of the school. A lot of other kids were arriving at the same time I was.

I received some strange glances, but for the most part, everyone minded their own business. Once I was past the doors, I felt like time stood still.... I forgot my pencil. Hopefully someone in my class had an extra.

Slowly I made my way to the principal's office to receive my locker number and class schedule. The sign on the door said, "Mr. Johnson". I pushed open the door and an ogre-like woman stared down at me through Harry Potter glasses.

She cleared her throat, "Can I help you Miss...?"

"Oh, Ryder, Lily Ryder. I'm here to receive my schedule and locker number from Mr. Johnson?" I asked uneasily.

"He's with a student right now, you'll have to wait a bit Miss. Ryder. I'm Ms. Pratt."

Suddenly the door swung open from Mr. Johnson's side and a very tall teenager with brown hair styled fashionably and a dashing smile walked out, "Thanks Johnson!"

He caught sight of me, paused a moment, gave me a quick smile, "Hey hun," and walked out of the office. I froze a moment before realizing who that was, "M-m-Ms. Pratt, may I go in now?"

"Yes dear," she answered.

I stood up, a little shaky, and entered the inner office. A short, middle aged man with a balding gray head greeted me with a smile, "And what may I do for you?"

"I'm Lily Ryder and I'm here for my locker number and schedule, sir," I explained politely.

"Ah yes, we've been expecting you Miss Ryder! Wait here a moment and I'll fetch your things right away," he stood up and printed a few papers and handed me a key, "Here is your schedule, and here is your locker key. The number is engraved on the side. Have a good first day of school!!"

I thanked him and walked out of the offices. "Ok, first class is in room 307," I murmured aloud.

"That's on the second floor. Would you like me to show you? I'm on my way to it," a tall girl with short black hair offered.

"Sure, thanks! I'm Lily by the way," I shook her hand.

"I'm Faye, nice to meet you Lily!" She smiled and shook back.

When we got to 307, Faye opened the door for me. I surveyed the room, then I saw him. He was sitting in the back with some of his friends.

Oh lovely, Shawn Peter Raul Mendes is in my class. Now I DEFINITELY won't be able to concentrate. Oh gosh I hope I look ok.

Faye and I chose seats right in front of Shawn. "You see who's in our class?" Faye sounded excited.

"Yeah, I met him in the principal's office, quite the charmer. He called me Hun," I was also getting excited.

"Oh, he calls all the girls Hun, but kudos to you for talking to him! Most of the girls faint away if he even looks at them," Faye scoffed.

I tried to hide my disappointment. The teacher walked in and started writing on the board, "Good morning, I am Mr. Wilde. Everyone please take out your pencils."

"I forgot to bring a pencil, do you happen to have one I could borrow?" I asked Faye.

"No, sorry, I usually bring extras, but I was in such a rush I only remembered one," she apologized.

Suddenly, I felt a tap on her shoulder, "Excuse me Hun, I couldn't help but overhear you needing a pencil. I have an extra one if you want to use it," a newly sharpened pencil was held out to me.

"Oh... thank you very much," I blushed and quickly took it.

"I'm Shawn," he smiled.

I was about to say, "I know, I saw you concert three times", when I stopped myself, "I'm Lily. It's a pleasure Shawn."

"The pleasure is all mine Lily," hearing my name roll off his tongue sent chills down my arms.

Today's gonna be a good day.
